I suspect the teacher whom you mention that buzzed a hour, practiced hours and did studio work was Jimmie Stamp or a student of his. It worked for me in college when I studied with him. But we never buzzed an hour since my lesson was an hour. I still do it for 5-10 minutes to begin each day. No more.

It was actually a couple teachers I know of. I probably shouldn’t mention the names but they are very well known. One guy I played a gig with was so frustrated. I was playing principal in the LA Doctor’s Orchestra as a ringer for Mahler 2. The guy playing second heard me playing for Colin and commented how easy it sounded for me. I told him about tongue level and that I never did buzzing and he said he did and hour and his playing got worse after taking with this guy. I asked why he kept doing it. He was actually pretty angry about his playing. I never understood why people start doing stuff that ruins themselves. My point was that these teachers don’t practice like they assign.

The smaller mouthpiece the easier high notes AND a good tone when practice correct. Bid Herseth played a 7.c Wizzuti a really small too

Herseth started with something like a NY Bach 7, which is different than a more modern 7C. The Claude Gordon Personal is actually very similar to that with a more rounded inside and outside edge and the cup made deeper and move of a concave V shape. The backbore is more open with a Schmidt design. Obviously, there are great players that use smaller equipment but you should be able to hear a difference in the fullness of the sound to Arturo Sandoval vs Allen Vizzutti. Both are amazing players. The point is that tighter equipment doesn’t really make it easier to player higher or increase endurance compared to correct playing and systematic practice. Try playing one of the six page etudes at the end of Saint-Jacome or one of the Top Tones Etudes by Walter Smith that are all over the horn. The tight quality is actually more of a detriment for playing high because it works against Tongue Level and having a variable resistance controlled by how you use your tongue. If the equipment is too restrictive you can’t make it more free compared to free blowing equipment allowing the player to control more of the resistance. You have to practice long enough to get used to it though. Just trying a mouthpiece isn’t the same as really practicing it consistently for two weeks and then seeing how things feel.

How much time on the lips is too much..5, 10 minutes.

I’m not sure what your question is. How much time on the lips for what? Talking about them or buzzing or what? I would say skip buzzing in any form. Completely! It is not the same as playing the trumpet and never can be the same.

@@JeffPurtle as a beginner about a year into this, how much time continuous play should one be limited to, I sometimes am working on scales, or a song or flexibilities find myself continuous play for 10 minutes or more of continuous play

@@JeffPurtle thank you so much, loved you 7 parts lectures...2/3 upper 1/3 lower. I am going to start the 4 step method of learning... beginning from the end....and getting it right 4 times before moving in, I have used this but not exactly to this level of achievement before moving on...

@@gregeberhardt4229 it’s better to play a scale and take it off 5 seconds then do another scale. Do a song and take a minute off. Do that so you prevent fatigue. That will help to develop good habits instead of playing when tired and picking up bad habits. I hopes that make sense. Use your time off your lips to do breathing exercises too n
