The Japanese candy brand HI-CHEW has become popular in the US in recent years. The candy is made with real fruit juices and was originally created as a substitute for gum in Japan. Here's how the company manages to produce over 700 million pieces of their candy per year.

I remember when this candy got crazy popular in my middle school, kids started selling them to each other in secret, and I mean SELLING them, boxes at a time. Teachers and parents didn't know what hi-chew was because it was newly popular, so parents started to freak out, thinking it was some kind of new drug... "high chew" they started reprimanding the school, so many kids got suspended... this candy will always hold a special place in my heart.

I started a “black market” in school with those things, I bought those really big bags with my own money and then since there were no vending machines and HI-CHEW is beloved by kids they went up and asked. And one of of those candies were $0.20 and that racked up and I ended up with at least $100 by the end of the month (I sold A LOT)

Actually the ones you eat in america are the American version. the ones in japan and china have a different texture. and the ones you get in your local asian market are Taiwanese.And the ones in japan and china have more flavors and have aluminum foil so they last longer and the ones rapped in plastic and dont taste as good. Flavors: 1.Strawberry 2.Mango 3.Apple 4.Grape 5.Orange 6.Lemon 7.Peach 8.Grapefruit 9.Lime 10.Acai 11.Pineapple 12.Kiwi 13.Durian 14.Lychee 15.Pitaya (drago fruit) 16.White grape 17.Ramune 18.Cola 19.Banana 20.Melon 21.Yuzu 22.Cherry 23.Grape soda 24.Cranberry 25.Canberry grape 26.Mango pinnaple 27.Strawberry yogurt 28.Blueberry yogurt 29.Plain yogurt 30.Grape fanta. 31.passion Thats only 31 out of over 170 loved flavors. (All the flavors above i have tried and my life long goal is to try all the hi-chew flavors. On earth and make morinaga the money they deserve because they are best company ) My favorite flavor is lemon And there is a caramel milk candy that morinaga makes called hi-soft. Hi-chew is life.

Lasagnut ;D the Asian ones last in your mouth much longer! I get really pissed seeing hi chew in stores and then seeing that it's not the genuine Japanese ones, but Taiwanese -_- I'd go out of my way to special order Japanese hi chews online, but I think over time the Taiwanese ones have been taking over? Cheaper production maybe? It's unfortunate since the Japanese is a step above the common ones we see.

I remember about 5-6 years ago, i made a friend on the bus. We began talking often and i started bringing Hi-Chews and i shared it with her. Eventually we stopped talking, though she still sat with me. she’d ask me every time if I brought Hi-Chew, when I’d say no, she’d stop talking to me. I realized this and stopped trying to bring candy and talking to her. Just a small story that i remember when i think of Hi-Chew, lol. 👏✨

now if the kit kat company brings out the flavored ones from japan like green tea or strawberry kit kat. I have to drive out to my japanese market an hour away.
@missconceptions
@missconceptions 5 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Unfortunately that won’t happen because U.S. Kit Kats are made by Hershey, where as Japanese Kit Kats are made by Nestlé. I live in LA where Japanese Kit Kats used to be abundant in Little Tokyo, but they’ve become harder to find over the last few years and I’ve heard that it’s because Hershey goes after importers who bring in the Nestlè varieties. =( So if you can still find them, don’t hesitate to buy them!

200odd300 Yes, but Nestlè does not have the rights to produce Kit Kats in the US, Hershey does. The same thing happened to Cadbury. Hershey has the rights to produce Cadbury in the US and in 2015, they ‘banned’ any imported Cadbury chocolates made in the UK. It really has to do with licensing agreements. “It is important for Hershey to protect its trademark rights and to prevent consumers from being confused or misled when they see a product name or product package that is confusingly similar to a Hershey name or trade dress.” Any imported chocolates that you do find in US stores are basically black market chocolates.

I used to buy Hi-Chew candy while I was in China visiting my (former) in-laws. Hi-Chew is truly probably the most delicious candy out there, the flavors are just absolutely incredible and the texture of the candy is really nice as well! I’ve only managed to find the candy once or twice here in Sweden and can’t even remember if it was in an American candy store or an Asian supermarket, think it was American candy store though. I do wish it was more easy to find Hi-Chew here, especially since Chewits with the dragon/dinosaur mascot disappeared from here many years ago after some years of being very popular in the 90’s. For me the 90’s candy was a childhood favorite and I missed it a lot when it was gone from the shops one day... Apple and grape were my favorite flavors out of the ones I tried in China. Pineapple is pretty nice as well, and for once there’s a strawberry flavor that doesn’t taste awful (I like strawberries but tend to hate strawberry flavored things because of bad flavoring)

I live on the East Coast in MA and I was eating Hi-Chew before they even translated the wrapper. That’s because I am a ten-year cosplay veteran and binged watched all of my favorite anime since I was a kid. Part of cosplay/anime culture is trying all the snacks and drinks your favorite characters are. So stuff like Pocky, Ramune soda, and Hi-Chew were what we ran on. Also, it feels good knowing that my home state baseball team played an important role in popularizing Hi-Chew.

Cyber Lemon Hi, I’m a highly religious priest and I theorize that Jesus used the power of the flavor in gum to send a message to God. There, God received his holy son’s message- giving Jesus the ability to walk on water. I know this because its clearly stated on Timmy 4:20.

I first had hi-chews when they came in a Japanese snack box my mom had ordered online. We immediately fell in love and I remember sometime after, seeing them in a small Asian corner store. Then I saw them in a regular gas station or something and was baffled that they would have something that I thought was super obscure. I had no idea they were actually pretty popular back then and only thought they had more recently become a thing in the states, until I watched this video and realized they've actually been around for a while. 😅

Since its christmas i recommend you try: brown cheese, its a cheese with seasoning and it has brown colour. you should also try: Julebrus, Its a sweet drink which is only exclusive in some countries, Including norway. And you should Risgrøt, Its cooked rice combined with milk in a bowl, Often served with a small cube of butter and served with cinnamon and suger. And the best: you should try pinnekjøtt!!!! Its Salted dried lamb ribbs. and ofcourse theres many many more delicous cuisines.
