I'm 6'5" and have just started running 70mm rise bars. After decades of riding bikes with much lower front ends, it feels like I've suddenly found perfection and I definitely won't be going back to low rise bars. The only negative I could find was steep climbing but descending was a revelation. Fwiw I'm also running quite a few stem spacers and 50mm DMR Defy stem.

I'm 202cm, riding the transition spire XXL, running the same stem, the bars are spank 75mm the bike is much more playfull on the descend, easier manuals and bunnies, but found it a bit unstable when have a hard landing (exp overshooting or a bit sketchy landing)

I run a 60mm spank bar. Love it for general trail riding for all the reasons you mentioned. However, during a recent enduro race, when I had to hammer out of the saddle for the inevitable sprint section, the downside to a high bar made itself obvious - I could not get my body shifted forwards and low enough to really lay down the power for a put of saddle sprint. It was perhaps the only instance where this setup falls down (Dak Norton mentioned a similar observation in an interview too). I never sprint during trail rides, so this went unnoticed til then. I think I’d definitely run a lower bar for enduro races as sprinting in not my forte and I need every bit of advantage

Interesting video. Really difficult subject to get a grasp on without considering other aspects of terrain choice, bike setup, and other geometry figures. What about the chain stay length / stack height correlation? Ape index is a good look at how the front of the bike interacts with different body types, but what about different rider heights vs inseam length? Would be a cool to do a video series to test out each aspect of bike geo and it's effect on bike fit/weight distribution. Would need a hyper adjustable bike for that, something like a Geometron or stumpy Evo.

I’m 6ft 3. Having just spent the past couple of weeks trying to demystify why I’m craving a higher bar on my new full 29 rig this video was a great watch! I think perhaps the geometry of a lot of new enduro rigs means our weight distribution relies more heavily on weight through the feet, even when cornering and as such a higher more comfortable cockpit, without the need to be worrying quite as much about pressing weight through your front wheel, makes everything else feel much more schwweeet. 🤔 The jury is still out! Great video 👏

15:40 Ape index correlates to: Long wingspan compared to body length needs lower bars than short arms compared to body length. I have a high Ape index (long wingspan compared to body length), so I prefer a low stack and low rise bars. I run 15mm rise bars and a 5mm spacer under the stem. I've tried higher, but thet doesn`t work for me. Someone like Dakota Norton has a low Ape index and has, as he puts it, alligator arms, thus needs higher rise bars to get to a good position. I tried bouncing around on his bike, and being of similar height as him, I was standing way higher than him on his bike. Standing on my bike however, I stand about similarly to him.

Its interesting that theres no real right answer and its just you will make different shapes on the bike with both setups depending on your body shape. Surely at some point there is a "correct" though?!
@megatryn
@megatryn 27 күн бұрын
@@BRINKUK I think there is the possibility to have a "correct" bodyposition and geometry in places like road racing, where the riding positions and effectiveness on the bike is much more static. In things like mountainbiking and especially in the extremes end of the scale like downhill and enduro, where the rider moves so much around on the bike and the riding style and weight placement on the bike has so much to say, there will never be an universally "correct" riding position. Two persons who are very similar in size and build can have totally different riding styles and be equally quick, you see this very well in the World Cup downhill races where the margins are tiny, but the riding styles are vastly different. The experiment is fun though and to have an open mind and try lot's of different things to find what suits oneself the best is underrated. Not to just go and blindly follow the latest trends.

Every body will /need/ different dimensions from a given bike. So splitting hairs between 40 and 50mm is silly. But fundamentally, all things normalised, if you're front is higher you will feel more 'behind' your bike even in steeps.. whereas the low bars will have you feeling still 'ontop' of your bike even in steep climbs. With higher front end you also get more leverage over the bike when it comes to manuals/bunnyhops etc SO with those things in mind, can you get the best of both with.. god forbid... drop bars?! Where you have a high set for descents and a low set for climbs xD

Higher bar set up makes all the difference! you need to check out the Rulezman V3 stem. Also check his video on stem lengths. If you don't want to fork out $300-400 on a stem that may not work for you, you can test with a cheaper version such as Aerozine XNC 10. $64 (USD) but shipping is another $60. Last week Intend released their new forks as well as a new stem GRACE DD - 25mm stem length where the bar is mounted above the steerer similar to Rulezman and Aerozine. Also worth checking it out. It all looks counterintuitive, especially if you are coming from a long-ish 50mm stem. But trust me, it is ok! It feels really good!

@@MTB_FANATIC99 It depends on your needs. If you are over 50 like me 50mm or 60mm helps a lot. Also factor in your stack height. Mine is low at 619mm. pretty used to a low setup, have low rise and slammed stem on a modern bikes (rise and spur). I feel like especially with long travel forks I feel like things are more vague with a high rise and stack. I just feel more aggressive all around with the lower rise setup and to be honest the position is really nothing compared to riding a fast road bike.

I fine most bikes now come with a lower front end, I don't like it, It makes me feel like I'm leaning over the front of the bike too far, like I am too far forwards on top of it, the longer your inside leg is the higher you are in relation to your bars and the more you are leaning forwards and over to reach them. I'm only 176-177cm but I have quite long legs so I always fit riser bars to compensate for this, I try to get my weight central on the bike by adjusting the bar height and reach, I don't want to be unweighting either of my wheels in my natural riding position when standing up. It's also easier on the back like addtext says.

When measuring yourself for a bike , the manufacturer gives a guide for height and one would guess that’s bare foot but surely it makes more sense to measure your height as you did there in the shoes you ride in for a more realistic measurement ? If I got it right, you said that lower bars put your weight further back. I think it's other way around, but maybe you were over compensating? My understanding is that usually when you switch to the higher bars you need to learn how to keep enough weight on the front wheel by changing your body position. Contrary low bars are keeping more wight on the front wheel "automatically". Otherwise I'm all about high bars, running 60mm rise, but I'm 6'7 with 6'11 wingspan so for me it's not extreme but minimum :D

I know my bars are too wide really and need to be cut down about 30-40mm for me. Should i go back to a higher stem now im more used to and confortable on the bike?
