On the second of May 2023 The Writers Guild Of America (which represents around 12,000 screenwriters) went on strike demanding:
1. That Writers' receive better financial compensation from streaming media platforms such as Netflix, Apple TV, Prime Video, etc.
2. That A.I. tools such as ChatGPT should remain as tools used only to aid research and script ideas and not to replace writers.
And 3. that Writer's contracts should have a Minimum basic agreement across all platforms so that writers working for shows like The Problem on Apple TV aren't paid less than writers working for Broadcast TV shows like The Tonight Show.
The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists or SAG-AFTRA also went on strike at the same time, and whilst many believe this was done in solidarity towards the Writers, it was also used to demand an increase in their own residuals from streaming platforms and to demand compensation for a possible future use of their likeness through A.I.
Kimiko Glenn, of Orange Is the New Black, shared a video featuring a check for $27.30 to show the need for an increase in residuals for streaming shows.
Whilst we all may agree with what Actors and Writers are demanding, their actions have gravely affected workers in areas that were already far less protected than their own.
VFX Artists still have no Guild or Union, they still have no one to protect them or control their minimum wage, overtime rates, pensions, or health benefits, and (unlike writers and actors) they don't receive ANY residual payments for ANY of their work on ANY platform.
So whilst these Unions fight to protect certain areas of Hollywood,
other areas like
the blue-collar workers,
the grunts,
the set builders and caterers,
the camera operators and hair and make-up artists were having their contracts reduced and even being laid off.
UK VFX firm Misc Studios has completely shutdown.
Industrial Light and Magic Singapore has shut down.
DNeg has let 70 of its 900 UK workers go, and offered the remainder either a 25% pay cut or joining a loan scheme to lower costs, and DNeg Singapore has also shut down
Scandinavia’s Viaplay and Germany’s ProSiebenSat.1 have both laid off around 400 staff, and eOne closed its UK theatrical operation.
And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
We are all in favor of fair pay and equal rights and benefits, but it should be fair pay, and equal rights and benefits for the entire sector!
Should a Model really earn more than the Artist that paints them?
Should the Mona Lisa model have been paid more than DaVinci for the finished painting?
Unfortunately, the crippling effects this strike has had on the VFX industry have rippled down the line.
And it seems we can no longer sustain the Fame Focus Channel.
The Fame Focus team started as 5 people who have worked for over 8 years and received over 1 billion views!
but now, due to the strike,
Our VFX content has been promoted less by KZbin,
Our view count has plummeted,
and Our RPM (Revenue per 1000 views) is now less than a dollar!
Since the strike, the Fame Focus team has been reduced to just three people, and for the past 2 months, the channel's revenue has been just $1000 a month.
Three people just cannot survive on $1000 a month,
Our Channel is dying and we've tried changing direction to save it (but as many of you rightfully pointed out) we're just not that type of channel.
If you'd like to try to help us, by watching more of our content, or by recommending it, we would be tremendously grateful as this is our last hope.
We'd like to thank all of you for your support, your views, and your kind comments.
We really appreciate having had the opportunity to entertain you all, it has been an honor, and we are tremendously sorry and extremely sad that we can no longer continue to do so.
