The fun thing re: latency is if you live close to a football stadium - place I used to live i'd sometimes hear the cheering 20 seconds before I saw what happened and so could spend the time wondering who scored, which side etc. (you can _usually_ tell by how loud it is whether it's the home team).

One thing I've noticed, and makes me smile, over a number of episodes, is that when Richard makes one of his wisecracks, there is always someone in the production team (I assume) who has a good chuckle 😁

I went to watch Spirited Away in the West End with my children, we are all huge fans already and the show had amazing reviews. Although it was an incredible spectacle and production , we were a little disappointed, as it was a word for word, scene for scene copy of the cartoon. Although it was impressive, I do like it when things adapted for the theatre are altered in some way.

I thought the same - it could have done with editing down some sequences and adding in more about her family so you really feel her loss. I'm not sure how much it works unless you've seen the film and lots of the kids around me were asleep by the end. Totoro was fantastic - highly recommend that. Beautifully staged, very emotional, and engaging even if you've not seen the film.

The switch from Analogue TV and Digital made a huge difference. I remember when you could watch the Test cricket on either the BBC or Channel 4 and listen to Test Match Special and they were in sync, and for quite a while Sky & TMS were close enough to being in sync to be unnoticable during away series. then tv became digital, TMS was still on medium wave and the gap between the two made it impossible to do in a way that was any good. At a similar time we had a Liverpool european match on the telly but listening to the radio, probably because Tyldesly was commentating or something, and we were celebrating a goal well before it even happened on the TV, we didn't need a replay to see it.
@thomasdalton15086 ай бұрын
When we first got a digibox for our TV in the living room, we still had an analogue TV in the kitchen and sometimes we would have the same channel on both. It had never been an issue before, but they were now several seconds out of sync and it became necessary to close the kitchen door to shut out the other audio.
@thebagelsproductions6 ай бұрын
I used to stick the radio commentary on for football. They have to describe the action, so they get less sidetracked. Out of sync now

Sometimes extra delay is added deliberately, especially for live events in the USA, especially sport, to give broadcasters a chance to pull the plug if anything particularly unsavoury, upsetting or distressing occurs (e.g.: an especially bad sports injury, a streaker or the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" at the Super Bowl - one of the incidents that contributed to this policy) - or bleep/duck audio to remove swearing. Amusingly, due to where they add that delay, sometimes when you are watching NFL games on Sky Sports in the UK, even via satellite, you can be seeing the pictures before people in the USA are receiving those same pictures.

Marina's very simplified explanation of latency with DASH, the most common streaming protocol today, was pretty good. There is now LL-DASH (Low Latency DASH) which may help considerably as it *can* reduce the latency to under 5 seconds (I've seen claims of under 2 seconds), but it does make it more sensitive to network delays which can cause more buffering problems. In simple terms, it works the same way as normal DASH, splitting things up into segments a few seconds long each, except that all the equipment starts processing each segment before it's received it completely - and trusts (hopes!) that the remaining data in the segment will arrive by the time it needs it.

On the subject of rights being tied up randomly is that one of the reasons that Star Wars, despite being one of the most well-known and loved nerd IPs hasn't had a majorly successful tabletop RPG, is that the rights to sell the game in a digital form (i.e. even in a PDF), are all held by the video game licence holders. This means they can only be sold physically, and so it's dependent on what your local shop has in stock.

Apart from checking any contract about what will happen if it becomes a musical, as Marina rightly said, I think it is worth when you start your book to think about other media. Firstly, with Audiobooks now being almost automatic, you MUST make sure your manuscript is good to read aloud, especially dialogue. If it is good, the narrator will enjoy it. If the narrator enjoys it, the book will be so much better. And if you do all that, the printed book will also be better. But does the story work as a play or film? It was often said that Michael Criton wrote film treatments which just happened to work as a book. I don't know how true that was, but his adaptations, often done by him, seem to work seemlessly.
@thebagelsproductions6 ай бұрын
Having read John Grisham a couple of times, I'm convinced that he very much wrote them with a view to the movie adaptations. They're not especially good books, but they make decent movies 😊

A very famous example of film makers using someone's image, without permission and getting successfully sued for it, is Alien 3. They used Michael Biehn's image and tried to get away without even telling him, nevermind asking permission or paying for it. They ended up paying him almost as much as they'd have paid to have him in the bloody film (which arguably may have made it a better film).

@@TheRestIsEntertainment Going out on a limb here, probably, but I wish that the adaptation of the Thursday Murder club was going to be a 6 part TV adaptation, rather than a movie. Simply because it seems to me that the subtleties of the shifting viewpoints, (and tenses) in the book will probably get lost in a 90 minute (or however long it will be) movie. I guess I might be in a minority here, but anyway, it sounds like the cast, so far, will be excellent, and I'm sure it will turn out superbly well.
@anonymes28846 ай бұрын
@@TheRestIsEntertainment You say that but Richard casually spoiled the post-credits scene for 'The Fall Guy' (which is still in cinemas) so it seems a valid concern. (absolutely _love_ the podcast but as a total spoilerphobe i'll have to reconsider if that's gonna be a thing)

Of course Micheal Biehn who played Cpl Hicks in Aliens was essentially killed off screen in between the films. The makers however used his image twice in Alien3, most particularly a very low rez monochrome facial image, and also a corpse dummy. Biehn sued them for wrongly using his image without asking and got as much for not being in Alien3 as he recieved for all his hard work in the excellent Aliens film.
@tommayne7736 ай бұрын
Exactly the example I had in mind!
@anonymes28846 ай бұрын
I mean, just _actually_ killed offscreen - that's literally what happened :). Still leaves a bad taste (I get _why_ - sets the tone, separates from the previous movie etc. - I just think it was a very lazy, almost _juvenile_ way to achieve that). It's why I recommend everyone just stops after 'Aliens' even though I totally accept that 3 and even 4 have good elements.
@MrFuzzyGreen6 ай бұрын
@@anonymes2884 whilst I'm bound to agree with you there, the problem with Alien 3 of course was that it had a release date before it had a script and the film is a result of scrabbling to meet that need. Fincher still won't be interviewed about it, so deep runs his distaste with the Producers. That said, the extended Directors cut is better, as with Aliens. I can't imagine any cut that can salvage the latter ones...
