I review, breakdown and explain The Boys Season 4. I discuss episode 4 with Homelander returning home and seeking revenge on the people that caused his trauma when he was younger. I react to why his inclusion was perfect, Antony Starr’s performance, Frank and Marty’s death, the ending with Barbara and the deeper meaning of what it meant for the character. I analyze Homelander's future and give my theories and predictions for episode 5.

Do you think this was Antony Starr's best performance as Homelander? Making us sympathise with the character for the first time in four seasons is no easy task and I think he did great with that! Let me know your thoughts below!

It was very good, you should look up anti-social personality disorder, also one of the best treatments for cptsd is ideal parent figure protocol, understanding a child deprived basic emotional needs is a hot mess, its very difficult to move past unresolved childhood trauma, the best way i can explain it is all the little traumas build up and it becomes a kind of mental log jam that can only be untethered bit by bit, every single traumatic event put under a microscope, it's a lifetime of erasing the trauma, nobody is really "healed" or "cured" and having such an insane childhood totally deprived of any parental bonding at all sounds crazy but happens a lot. .

Antony Starr deftly encapsulated the shame and trauma from adolescent, which most of us repress as well. On the flip side, the actor also projects Homelander as the embodiment of raw Freudian id. His most impactful scenes are ones where he liberates himself from juggling his sexual/aggressive instinctual drives versus the more rational, ego & superego mediation instilled by societal upbringing. Perhaps as children, we've also fantasized punishing those who have wronged us in the past, be it schoolyard bullies or guardians. Homelander's retribution rage was a reflection of our collective displacement. Lurking only in our darkest imaginations.

I can’t empathize with him. We already knew his childhood sucked. Same thing the Russians did to Soldier Boy. Of course Homie was a kid and it fractured his psyche. Literally splintered it in to dissociative identities… That somehow communicate with each other. Even his mental illness is super powered.

I think Chace doesn't get enough recognition for his character, he does a whole lot of more intimate acting with his face and small gestures, like being truly creepy with a blooming onion takes a lot of understanding how to be creepy with a blooming onion. His scenes with Susan are gold, they work really well together.

A lot of credit to Anthony Starr not just for acting but for understanding the character. Kripke initially wanted Homelander to come down and be far more cruel and blunt to the scientists, Anthony suggested tgem taking a far more nuanced approach with Homelander being sentimental and almost nostalgic at times.

It was very much like he was coming down there to torture those people and basically pull the wings off flies. Ant called me and he said, 'That feels wrong to me. This is like my home. I think there would be moments where I would be very childlike and sometimes confused. I could be cruel, but then I could feel bad about being cruel and I could just be this mess where you never know how I'm going to react next.' Man, was he right. The one thing that keeps getting brought up is the fact that at ANY moment, Homelander had a chance of actually coining out better person. If any of those scientists had a conscience, like he said; if any of them said ‘this was wrong’, he would’ve probably became slightly better. But he was never ‘John’ to them, he wasn’t even homelander.. he was just a product. The scientists try to appeal to his humanity by calling him John, but they already ripped it apart from him years ago.

The thing is that Homelander will never get over his need for love. Not only is this a basic human need that he was born with, but it was extremely amplified through trauma and psychological/physical torture. It is ingrained in his mind and he is being delusional (as usual), when saying that he doesn’t need it anymore. I think what actually happened is that he tried to cope with trauma by hurting his abusers. It worked to some degree, but it’s only temporary. His only defence against the trauma is the delusion that he is not human (he is) and his own mortality is a constant reminder of that. So he can’t escape that. Unfortunately, the only way it can go further is insanity
@AyKrax
@AyKrax 10 күн бұрын
more V or better V? Stormfront and Soldier Boy seem to not age at all or at the very least extremely slow and non-humanly. The next logical move would be for Homelander to go find his father analyze his blood and artifically extend his life with Vought scuentists. Also to clarify Soldier Boy isn't immortal he's just extremely durable and can't die from natural causes like normal humans and modern supes
@Plamkton

Now the big question is how would homelander genuinely overcome that "need for love." Best thing i can come up with is Later in the season hes gonna go through a lobotomy to remove the part of his brain that make him "human."

I honestly think reading the comics and seeing how well the show adapted and reworked so much actually adds a layer to the whole show. IMO idgaf what other people’s opinions on the comic itself is, as as “shitty” as it was, I still enjoyed what it was as a whole. That plus seeing the show, I find having that background reading, makes everything better. Knowing the characters from the book and seeing the expansions taken place story wise is amazing. Homelander has went from a POS 1-2 note character, to actually having some depth behind him, still being a POS but having further insight elevates the experience.

That was my take as soon as he smiled and laughed in the elevator, covered in blood and gibs. I am curious how this show ends; how Homelander ends. If they kill him, or strip him of his powers to live as a pathetic, weak human. This is one of those shows that is consistently great. @@dirtydra123 And the vents also take away flying, superstrength, superhearing and the sense of smell from Homelander? The ice rink scene literally made zero sense, it was retarded and they added it for the schock value only because they thought Jesus slicing people with ice skates would be cool. If the vents had zinc inside, why didnt he fly towards the noise in a second and just crushed Hughie? You can argue as much as you want, but this moment is really non-defendable. And it's not even the worst culprit when it comes to things that make zero sense, the worst one is Maeve surviving from season prior. It just invalidates the whole season and makes Soldier Boy useless as a character. He was supposed to be a nuclear weapon that can kill Homelander. Not only did it not kill Maeve, it took away her powers and she survived falling from a skyscraper as a human afterwards. What was the point of Soldier Boy then? I can already see the same downhill path as in Game of Thrones in season 5, where they started sacrificing consistency for "scenes that might look cool" and I'm really worried

The one thing that was absolutely bone chilling was his laugh after he lazered off the one guys, uh, dirty bits. We’ve seen him laugh before, but it always felt haughty and fake. This one not only felt real, but scary. You can hear the pain, anger, and sadistic joy in how he’s cackling at the suffering. It felt like watching the Joker torture someone with an echoing and ear piercing laugh.

Homelander doesn’t like a madman because he wants to be loved, but like he said in season 3 he would settle for being feared if he lost his chance to be adored. If Voght actually treated him like a person and a leader in the making he would have had his good side be fully developed. Sure he would still be a bit of an egotistical prick but Homelander has shown an appreciation for real loyalty and love and would reciprocate. He is just too broken and psychologically crippled to be that man.

something I think people miss is that homelander did see these scientists as family. There little things like how stares longingly at the picture of him with the scientists. Honestly all respect to Ledger but this is taking it to the next level. Ledger did all he could in a couple hours of screen time. But the Boys basically have seasons of time to characterize Homelander and his motivations. They can slowly peel back the layers and show the layers of fucked up that Homelander truly is.

The conflict homelander has inside him is a reflection on all his beliefs and makes this episode crucial to understanding him, we get hinted throughout the series and know that a child raise by vought wouldn’t be raised in any stellar condition but this was it. Homelander doesn’t want to be human or equal to humans due to never being treated as one in childhood. Never given any grace or human love. His conflict is that he can’t beat that ingrained need for human acceptance which in his mind is his final link to humanity. I hope for the sake of entertainment that this was like his final attachment and he beats that need to be likeable to humans. I think true villainy will ensue after these actions.

I will say Anthony Starr has definitely elevated the character of Homelander from the comics, it’s a portrayal so unique and nuanced that the comics just can’t deliver on. While the comics I felt had better storylines and an overall better plot, the character of Homelander is really perfected and elevated by Anthony Starr.

Hughies Mum is Homelanders Mum. She has super senses and laser/xray vision from compound V and thus why Homelander is hers and Soldier Boys son with a mix of there powers. It makes sense seen as she could see through Hughie that he was hiding the compound V. Homelander is Hughies older brother and his Mum had to leave Hughies Dad due to reasons pertaining to Homelander and safety etc.

In my humble opinion, Season 04 Ep 04 was Anthony Starr's peak performance as Homelander. As of the writing of this comment (maybe he outperforms himself in later episodes, I don't know), there has not been a better display of acting skill, surpassing even the plane scene. While I was watching the episode, I found myself wanting to go back to the lab everytime the plot moved somewhere else. The guy truly deserves all the recognition that is surely going his way.

Guess I’m the only one who liked him better without the back story. Just seems like more melodrama on top of some already melodramatic plot points this season. How many topics do we wanna cover? Mental illness, pregnancy termination, Kimiko’s past, whatever the world is going on with Frenchie, racism, trials, Butcher dying, Hughie’s mom, Hughie’s dad, and i’m sure there’s more. Any one or two of these could’ve been the focus this season. But they wanna do it all at once.

It’s wild the range in episode 5 between Homeland and Starlight. I mean Homelander had sooooOOOoooo many micro gestures displayed and then you have Starlight who I don’t want to knock so hard because I’m sure she’s sad for doing the plastic surgery…but she had equal amount of screen time but was soooo wooden because she lost a bit of facial expressiveness…sucks man. I almost think successful shows should create mandatory contracts that restrict actors from doing dramatic facial surgery’s if they want to stay in the show.

We just found one weakness that can take him down. If a story comes out in that show that embarrasses homelander to the whole world and everyone turns against him, it will be the beginning of the end for him. Because he will be shunned and ridiculed at the same time. The worst kind of social death. His relationship with stormfront could be that thing if her dna helped create him. Mommy issues indeed.
