How Hong Kong Became a Giant Refrigerator
Here’s a statement-'Over the last 50 years, Hong Kong has become a giant refrigerator'. Despite its hot, humid, subtropical climate, the city remains an icicle all year round. But what do I mean by this?
Well, Hong Kong has a bizarre problem. It has developed an obsession with air-conditioners so extreme it no longer makes any sense-winter coats are needed during the sweltering summer, and ACs are blasted in the midst of winter.
Now, there are many countries around the world that use and abuse their air conditioners-Singapore, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the US, to name a few-but Hong Kong (the city I grew up in), takes all this to a whole new level. So this raises questions-why are there so many ACs? Why is the temperature set so low? And-strangest of all-why can‘t they just turn it off?
With Hong Kong, the answer is never simple...

@@mu3191The same people who criticise people for abusing the AC are also the same people who either crank their heaters to max aka 2000W+ during winter or have their fire place shoved full of wood pumping out a trail of black smoke from the chimney. They’d say that people who can’t tolerate heat are whimpy yet are the first to wear a puffy coat when it gets below 18 degrees C. It’s all the same, it’s just that some people are more tolerate to heat and some to could. I could personally sit in a air conditioned room with AC cranked to the lowest 16 degrees while in shorts, walk into cool room (4 degrees C) and adapt to it, but sweat buckets at 22+ degrees.
@icehawk3442
@icehawk3442 9 ай бұрын
The last point about going back to constructing buildings better at cooling is so underrated. When I was living on-campus in NUS in Singapore, my room was in a 26-storey industrial-themed skyscraper. The entire design was meant to be used with AC, yet for cost reasons they had rooms on lower floors without AC installed. It was an absolute nightmare as the whole apartment design was designed for no natural convection/ventilation, with the architects assuming that it would only be sensible to AC the whole massive skyscraper but the administration then preventing AC from being there. From previous experience, living without AC can be acceptable even in the tropics; in contrast, designing living spaces that make living without AC unviable is the true big culprit.

The dehumidifier uses almost as much power as an aircon, with only a fraction of the main thing people want. Yes when its 28c and 85% humidity, having it become 50% humidity is nice, but most people would rather pay the extra 20% in power to get the temp down to 22c

@KaiserAfini

A good AC can make a lot of difference in summer. But you need to mind the thermal shock making it more likely for you to get sick. Plus, if you substitute extreme heat for extreme cold, you are solving a problem by creating another problem and wasting resources while doing so, which is arguably worse.

I live in Calgary, Canada, and we don't use an air conditioner in my home. It can get hot too in the summer, even if it's not as hot as Hong Kong. However, many other houses use air conditioners. In winter, I think almost every home uses the heater, or at least some kind of warming tool, or many would die from the cold.

. I've personally never heard that AC=healthy as a person living in Hong Kong, but rather air circulation=healthy. That means country parks with air circulation also means healthy, which people flooded to during the pandemic cuz they have no where to go to spend their free time. It feels better in a place with air circulation than a place with fully enclosed windows and dead air flow. It doesn't matter whether the circulation comes from the AC or not, opening windows and turning on fans also means air circulation, not just specific to air conditioner. but the problem is everyone turns on AC, so if you open window hot air will come into your apartment (or as a result of horrible building designs and urban planning that make air circulation really bad in the city), and lets just say fans don't cool you in any way when they blow warm and humid air into your face.

Water coolant + green electric energy would solve all the issues in this vid. Besides, we won't ever be able to decrease energy consumption, with or without ACs & fridges. With the increase of moving to Industry 5.0 & above, the only possible move is green energy. Kinda odd that this video's sponsor doesn't even mention any of the green energy programs he have under his belt, eh?

Its not that simple. Heat energy is huge and nonstop in the summer. The cheapest way to slow it down is having a well insulated house and a really efficient AC. But efficient ones are super expensive to install. It's pretty complicated but also a decent way to earn a living.

Most of the energy used is from the multiple motors involved in the refrigeration cycle that draw major Amps on start up, as tech improves and we are able to throttle the comfort according to the the load without stopping a system they will become much more efficient. Takes more energy to start an AC than it does to keep it running at variable speeds for days. It’s the starting and stopping of these motors and systems that stresses our grid so much.

As a Gweilo living in Hong Kong, I would like to add a few points: 1. No need for AC in Winter. Winters are less humid in Hong Kong than in Paris, and temperatures hardly ever exceed 15 degrees centigrade. Every year in December I have an argument with my colleagues to switch off the AC for the remainder of the Winter so we don't have to wear jackets and coats... in the office. 2. Hong Kong, as a city, is horrendously badly designed, trapping the heat inside the city 3. Hong Kongers are cheap; they buy the cheapest, lowest quality crap, which consumes more electricity. They will never buy expensive energy-efficient AC units. 4. Cheap electricity. Nobody cares about keeping the AC on all day long, as electricity is dirt cheap. 5. And for fuck's sake, fix your AC units that constantly drip on the sidewalk, dammit! It's supposed to be forbidden by law, but law enforcement in this city is non-existent. Luckily Hong Kongers are placid.

@@mabokman Yes, Yes, I am aware of this argument. How come this is only an issue in Hong Kong? I never encountered such issue in Canada, America, the UK or in France? How come? And, btw, take off your coats inside the office, and you won't sweat.

One more point If all your neighbours turn on their ac and you open the window, all the heat air from those ac would come in your home since the apartments are so close together in HK, you feel even hotter you have no choice but to turn on your ac too.

@@johnjohnson6090 how are you supposed to stop them leaking? It's in the nature of the ac unit. Humidity gathers on the evaporator. If it's too humid out, it has nowhere to go except the ground. Your car has a special duct to get the water on the road, rather than the floor inside.

I hate AC abusers(they emit useless CO2 emissions). Why people don't try dehumidifiers or adapt their body with heat? People should use AC only when needed. Indian Government put limit on AC manufacturers that they can't sell ACs capable of lowering temperature below 25C(ideal room temperature is 25C). I live in Ahmedabad, India which is situated at Tropic of Cancer and I have absolutely no problem with dry heat(low moisture) even at 40-42C(104-108F). Only humidity along with heat is issue for me after rainy season. I can live in dry heat at home studying(and other non physical activities) without fan/AC after removing my t-shirt. After coming home doing a physical activity, I need fan and take a bath. People regularly bath 2-3 times a day in my city. Houses can be made more cooler by using modern construction techniques and using some cheap hacks like covering windows during hottest parts of days(usually noon-afternoon). PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD ARE HORRIBLE.

As someone who’s lived in HK for a certain amount of time, I’ve never actually heard any Hong Kong residents saying that AC is healthy. In fact, most people I know speak the exact opposite, they say that AC is bad for health because it stops people from sweating, thereby preventing the body from naturally removing toxins. To my knowledge, they don’t really like the AC either, but since HK is so damn hot and humid during spring, summer and autumn (in autumn it’s just hot, not humid), turning on the AC seems to be the only way to stay sane. I might also add that the consensus, at least from what’s I’ve gathered amongst people I know, is that the energy efficient AC models are “not cold at all”. Perhaps they just came across some that are poorly made. I don’t know.

As a HK student, you will find the AC turned to 16°c for the whole day and it would be hilarious when a new teacher comes in with short sleeves with a mad and confused voice, “ WHY IS THE AC TURNED ON TO 16°c-?”

When I was in secondary school the school actually has a policy requiring AC temperature to be set above a certain temperature. When the teacher is gone someone will just walk to the ac panel and crank the temperature to the lowest possible

I live in Hong Kong but I've never heard about people turning on AC because they want fresh air. In fact people often turn off their AC for fresh air, or they just turn on their air cleaner, that works too.

I live in Hong Kong and I have to wear a jacket *everywhere*. In the doctor’s office it’s 23 degrees C. In most malls I have to wear at least a sweater. But when the typhoons come, it feels so good because it becomes nice like an A/C. And even without A/C, summer here is actually bearable here inside the house.
