The Mysterious Chinese Art Heists Across Europe
Stockholm, Sweden. 2010. Passersby on the streets of the capital were confused and scared. Several cars in and around the vicinity had lit up in flames, and no one had any idea why. Police soon arrived on scene but they too were baffled with what they saw.
Now, several kilometers to the west, on the outskirts of the city, a small group of masked men made their way across the grounds of the Drottningholm Palace (the private residence of the Swedish Royal Family, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Their target was the royal pavilion situated in the southern part of the complex, which displayed countless works of historic art.
Once there, the men forced their way in through the backdoors, and went right to work. They smashed the protective display cases, and grabbed whatever items they wanted. This immediately set off the alarm system, which alerted the Swedish police.
Now, despite the alarm, the robbers remained calm, because they knew exactly where the police were. The burning cars were in fact a distraction for them set up by the robbers, and they had fallen right into the trap. Still, the police raced towards the crime scene, but by the time they reached the royal pavilion, the place was empty (the robbers were in and out in less than six minutes).
Upon inspection, sculptures, chalices, plates and teapots - all invaluable items - were now missing from the permanent state collection of art and antiquities; and this wasn’t just a huge economic loss, but a cultural one as well.
It was later found out that after fleeing the pavilion on mopeds, the robbers made their way to a nearby lake where they were then picked up by a white speedboat. Though from this point, the trail went cold...

To all those who are wondering why the chicken cup was so expensive, because they were produced exclusively for the Ming dynasty emperors in the mid 15th century using special kiln techniques. It has high failure rate and all the failed produce were just destroyed to avoid the techniques being known by outsiders. After 64 years in production, it was off production due to its high cost. Hence, there were only 4 cups could be found in the world today, and most are kept in museums or private collections.

I spent my entire childhood living in Beijing, 5km away from the ruins of the old Summer Palace. As crazed as China is with infrastructure and construction, the site of the Summer Palace, after the British and French soldiers burnt it to the ground 160 years ago, was never renovated. They left it that way. While modernisation brought skyscrapers and condo buildings all around the Palace, it stayed the way Britain and France left it. China remembers

As a Chinese national I am not supportive of these heists, but I do think of them as kind of "cool", that these people just came in and did their job without hurting or killing anyone. But I do think that these billionaires (or whoever funded the heist) has definitely seen too much importance in artifects instead of the livelihood of people.

you have to remember during Maos so called 'great leap forward' china ITSELF actually destroyed all their ancient relics, burned books, art and texts AND destroyed their palaces.. if the British hadn't taken these pieces of art they would actually be gone forever. ALL the other art/relics that were saved were taken by the Chinese nationalist party to Taiwan so it wouldn't be destroyed by Mao and the communist regime - in those times literally ALL art, music and film was destroyed and banned the only thing that was allowed was propaganda art/music..they completely annihilated their culture. its only now the communist party is changing its tune and instead of taking the blame for the lack of historical artifacts which was mainly their fault.. they like to blame it all on other countries errors done hundreds of years ago creating further division and hatred for the western world.

@@martiddy Well, right NOW it belongs to China, since they took it back. Your analogy about how Mongolians wouldn't have the rights to take their territory back actually only applies to the British. It's also the same argument your doctor made when you were born and he chopped your nuts off.

I know this video is old but some new information has surfaced surrounding this topic. Merely a month after this video was released some of the loot from the Chinese Pavilion heist in Stockholm was recovered. In September of 2019, the police busted a fence trying to sell the items, still in Sweden. Therefore it's very unlikely that the Chinese billionaires or the government would be the ones carrying out these heists. Yes, the reoccurcing theme is probably not a coincidence but the fact that some of the items were still in Sweden almost 10 years after the heist would indicate that something like that is inaccurate

These thieves must be so professional, that they followed their “orders” to the letters and had only stolen “Chinese” artefacts. if I’m one of them, I will definitely be tempted to do some of my own “shopping” since I’m in the “shop” already...

In order to steal from an empire with impunity, you have to be an empire, preferably more powerful. Just like the British back in the day. So not all countries are allowed to do that. It might be an act of historical justice, but the basic law of might makes right is as true now as it was then.
