You ever look at your dog after a hunt, walk or just while they are sitting there and realize how miraculous an entity they are? The kindness they show us and us to them is ancient. Dogs aren’t just our best friends, we are brothers and sisters. I’m buying my dog a steak tomorrow. She’s been earning it for thousands of years.

Yeah it's amazing there's no other animal on this planet that genuinely loves their owner as much as a dog,for other animals it's simply because you look after them but dogs even love owners who abuse them

I know this was posted a year ago. But just a heads up if it’s a T-bone, I’ve noticed that the bone will break up into three parts, the upper T section, the lower T section, and then where the two parts join the lower part of the T will break off twice and it’ll make this square inch chunk of bone. I’ve had to reach down a couple different dog throats to stop them from choking, little dog and big. So just a heads up when giving your pooch another treat!

Yea a few months ago it was snowing and I decided to take my dog rex out in the snow. It was his first time ever seeing snow as we live in Texas and rarely ever get any. Me and him ran through the woods and the snow and had lots of fun. Then I raced him out of the woods into a giant field, he won obviously I didn't stand a chance especially in the snow lol. And for a second both of us just sat there taking a breather and I looked at him just sitting there taking in all the snow and truly realized how amazing he was. I don't really have the words to explain the feeling and realization I had, but it was a moment I would never forget. A few days later the Texas blackout happened and are power was out and we had to leave and go to my old house(I have two houses because we moved to a new, bigger and better house but we never sold the old one) which still had power but no running water. It was a difficult trip there and an experience I had never expected but I remember laying in my old house while there was freezing cold blizzard outside and was thinking about how bad this whole thing was. In the middle of a blizzard with no running water and in the middle of a pandemic, the whole thing was just a mess. But then I looked down at Rex and realized it wasn't all that bad, if anything I was pretty lucky considering I still had power, a warm bed and I had Rex. Even though the hardest of times dogs will always be there for you, they will always love you no matter how bad of a person you are, no matter what you look like, no matter if you're down and sad dogs will always be there for you. And that should make you feel very special to know that someone cares about you that much.

We also feel for other animals, just not as much that we do for domestic ones. Cows, pigs, chickens evolved to also be domesticated, but due to the different reasons they evolved to become food we dont feel so bad about killing them, but again, we didnt evolve pets to be eaten, which makes me think what the fuck goes on in the brain of someone who does eat them. My personal pet theory (pun intended) is that humans, dogs, and horses teamed up to conquer the entire rest of the animal kingdom.

Yet every saluki I've known did best on a predominantly meat & bone diet. Sure, they maybe slightly more able to eat such a poor nutritional diet but that does not mean that they all were originally fed garbage. Indeed, their original purpose was to provide meat for both parties. They are extremely good at catching small to medium prey. They were highly valued & fed a share of everything they caught. If their original people were so stupid as to feed them a very poor diet, the dogs wouldn't have been willing to share so easily. The reason they so happily handed over the prey was because they were well fed. Let me tell you, after having fed countless dogs a near infinite supply of meaty bones; you best not try to get between a hungry dog & their dinner. My dogs are well fed but even I know better than to try that stupidity. Like, a rescue I worked with a while ago, inhaled an entire rabbit she caught before I could shout to stop. It was all but gone in less than 10 seconds! It was a wild rabbit that happened to run by us while walking by. She was not even that big a dog. There's just no way that the initial salukis were not very well fed, especially if anyone expected they wouldn't just wolf it down but politely share it with the people. Also my understanding is that the salukis were typically owned only by the super wealthy.

I wonder if the relationship started with cooperative hunting. Both wolves and humans are persistence hunters. The dog pack and the human tribe between them chase a herd to exhaustion. If it splits the dogs chase the escapees, if it stands its ground the humans throw things (spears or even stones).

IT wouldn't take dog packs long to figure out, especially with "buffalo jump" style hunting that being near humans meant lots and lots of guts and offal to get for free, and the humans doing to butchering!! and being too busy to try to chase off the dogs!!

@Anna K While true I assume the artist was attempting to portray domestic dogs rather than captive wolves, but at an early state of domestication when they still physically resembled the wolf. That is part of the issue in trying to determine when dogs were first domesticated. The further you go back toward the first domestication events, the more likely any remains being unearthed are going to be hard to distinguish from bones belonging to dogs' wild cousins.

Lots of people like to say dogs can "Sense your vibe and smell fear." I've noticed a lot of people take that at face value and seem to think they have some extra sense but really, they're reading the exact same subtle body language and emotional changes that humans are able to read about each other. The same way you can tell your best friend is upset even though they aren't outwardly showing it, dogs and people basically grew up together and we've evolved to be able to read each other at a glance.

Apparently service dogs trained to help with epilepsy can smell a seizure before it happens. They train them with a harvested scent in a container. They are also amazing at recognizing patterns and subtle details as you said. So if your brow is imperceptibly furrowed meaning you are troubled they notice your behavior pattern and small movements we may not notice in close friends or family but we can kind if just sense.

So dogs like Huskies need higher meat content in their diets? What about Chow Chows? how many copies do they have?

Not sure, but Chows were originally bred as war dogs and hunting dogs.

@@canadiannomad540 That's a good combo, have you ever used fish oil before ? It can help the dogs coat become smoother and healthier.

Man finds abandoned puppy, says "Oh, cute!", brings it up, enjoys it's playfulness, train-ability, loyalty, and ability to help hunting, to act as a guard, ad so on. It has been a perfect relationship for millennia.

It's simple. One day, our ancestors found orphan wolf puppies. Puppies were cute.

They probably would have just ate them if that was the case, there had to be a mutual benefit to co existence like help hunting or guarding the camp.

Wolf puppies are vicious. They will bite with their litte teeth. Most likely they would have killed the wolf puppies as they are competitors to humans.

Thank you - illuminating. We are a dog household, currently sharing our home with three of these marvellous beings. They both understand much of what we are as we understand much of them. Our first mate, Jo, was picked up off the street in a holiday town in Central Java many years ago. He, a pup at the time, indicated quite clearly through body language that he wanted to be with us and this in the two weeks of our holiday. He died in my wife's arms 15 years later. I mist up as I finish.

I can see why people that didn't "like" dogs were weeded out of the gene pool as well. This isn't just a matter of liking or disliking them, some humans (probably more children) were probably downright terrified of large carnivores with big teeth chilling out in their village. If they grew up into adult dog haters, they probably wouldn't be regarded as prime dating material in the village. So people that were either neutral or positive towards them became the prime stock from which modern humans descend.
