Stop getting foreign breeds. Adopt pariah dogs which are adapted to Indian conditions. I feel so bad that they are treated so badly. And, let us call it Desi Kutta. Pariah is so condescending a name that the British called it. Here’s a wiki passage about desi kutta: “Despite the Indian pariah dog being highly intelligent and easily trainable, the breed was intentionally downplayed during the British Raj by merchants who wished to sell their foreign breeds within the country.[22] Their popularity in the West in recent years, however, has resulted in hundreds of dogs being exported out of the Indian subcontinent.”

I disagree, all dogs are special and all living things are equal. In India even humans living on the streets are treated horribly let alone dogs. In fact, if the demand for breezed dogs falls, they won’t hesitate to euthanize there dogs he wishes to sell. So it needs regulation. A better solution for stray dogs should be implemented like adoption, small enclosures etc but whether everyone will that public money should be spent on this is a difficult question

Nayanars (Tamil: நாயன்மார், IAST: Nāyaṉmār) the great 63 Tamil Hindu Shaivite saints from 6-8th CE literally mean 'hounds of Siva'. So till that time, they did not look down upon the dogs. But now you get the western interpretation of 'being a dog' which was classically used in the phrase "Indians and Dogs not allowed" by the British. Fools who can't even respect a great animal, you think they can comprehend a great culture. Then modern day bollywood is partly responsible for the 'sadak ka kutta' derogatory remark.

Another important reason why Indians look down upon the Indian dogs is the influence of Islamic invasion. In Islam dogs are seen as evil and impure. In many Muslim dominated areas in India you won't find many dogs as they are killed off by poisoning and other means. Unfortunately many Hindus also picked up this Islamic habit and treat dogs really badly, esp in Northern India. It's high time we stop calling Indian indigenous dogs with derogatory colonial terms like pariah, kutta etc... We should learn from Japan how treat the indigenous dogs.

But the connotation that it has, the usage of it as a cuss word in phrases like "kutta kameena", "kutte ki maut", "kutte ki dumm", "kutte ki ilaka", "har kutte ka din ata hai", all seem very, very Islamic. Even in Christianity, there are concepts like "dog from hell", so the two Abrahamic cults have had their fair share of contribution in demeaning the stature of the dog here in India, knowingly or unknowingly.

Then, some breeds are not suitable to Indian weather and Indian crowded environment like Husky, rottweiler etc. Finally for those who consider Indian Pariaha, Different breed have different quality. Pariah dog is not ment for small apartment. They need nominal amount of exercise than small dogs. More effort to train than those pedegree dogs. Since these are not selectively breed, they have greater natural instinct to hunt, bark, chase than to play and always cuddle. No matter, They would be best companions.

All animals are holy in their own way. If I kill a mouse , I offend ganesha, If If eat a bull , I offend shiva, if I take care of a pecock i earn the favour of subramanyan/kartikeya , Lions and tigers for devi, snakes for the nagas etc. It is like a protection mechanism for the animals, that enlightens and encourage us to coexist.

The Karuppaswamy devata also has 2 pariah dogs accompanying him, you can see it on almost every single temple of karuppaswamy no matter how small it is. We can say it as pariah dog because most of the folk songs song ffor the devata mentions him have "Sen-nai" which refers to pariah dog in tamil nadu. interestingly Karuppaswamy is also believed to be born 5300 years ago

Very well said, Indian street dogs are very intelligent. My mom used to tell us this story in my childhood. When my mom was pregnant and very near to due date, they were living in a small house. One dog came and digged out a hole in the backyard because it was also pregnant and getting ready to deliver its babies. So my mom went to her and requested like this "Look if you deliver your babies here then you won't let anyone come this way. I am also pregnant and soon guests will come to see my baby after my delivery and you may bark at them. Why do you want to trouble me at this stage. Can you please go somewhere else?". Looks like it left by evening and looked for another place nearby. My mom says they are very intelligent. My parents always feed the street dogs even when they had pet dogs. Now they are in their 70s and these street dogs are only their guardians at their home. What I mostly like in India is, food in normal households never goes waste because of dogs.

Haganah (the militia that would become the Israeli defence forces) created a Intelligence dog unit of Pariah Dogs which were super intelligent. Today’s Israeli forces don’t use them because Pariah have intelligence of their own and choose to attack the enemy and cannot be forced to attack. Pariah are extraordinarily brilliant and in whichever Indian street these are living it is almost impossible for thieves or burglars or new person to commit a crime. But humans are becoming dumb and will not listen to alarms raise by them at the very first instance.

* Correction - Early humans likely started the process of domesticating wolves by interacting with wolf pups rather than fully grown wolves. While the exact details of how domestication occurred are still debated among scientists, the prevailing theory suggests that humans tamed and raised wolf pups, which would have been more manageable and adaptable to living with humans.
@saptam1001
@saptam1001 Ай бұрын
Yes it's still debated, in fact, the debate extends to the real possibility that today's wolves came about when environmentally separated from much older tame dog species. So it's not really clear which came first.

I have named my rescued puppy Pari in honour of Indian Pariah dog even though she is mix breed. However, people relate her name with fairy as this baby is very cute and very calm with known people 🧚‍♂️ ✨️ Only at outsiders and stray cats/dogs she barks, otherwise people doubt if she is mute. And such a good mannered - leave your own plate full of nonvege by her side, she will not touch it. And after walk she will not touch even her favorite food unless I take her to wash her feet. My Pari is a real darling baby.

Great video! It's unfortunate that this important and outstanding breed has been relegated to "pariah" status even when we have the fancy Kennel Club of India pontificating about foreign breeds. Why don't we have a breed name for them when so many other less visible Indian breeds have names? The Kennel Club should take this up. Our household at various times have had foreign breeds and the Indian Pariah. Both were dearly loved and affectionate but the latter was far more at home in hot, humid Indian conditions and more intelligent.

Vaishnavites consider Dogs as impure because of its unhygenic scavenging practices. One story, a dog will enter the Sanctum Sanctorum of Srirangam temple. So they did mantra prokshanam and ritual for cleansing. Parasara bhattar said in a shloka. "People clean you when a dog comes, who will clean you because I entered" Refers to him being impure than a dog (a benchmark of impurity). Saivaites of course relate to Dog as a God itself...

From Sri Lanka. This is the same dog that lives here. The oldest friends of our civilization. But after the whites came, many things changed. Our language, religion, clothing, culture, etc., were inferior, while theirs were superior. So much so that this affected our dogs as well. Now these dogs are commonly called "wild dogs". But these are the ones who have adapted to our environment, they have no diseases, they are intelligent, and they are clever. It is scary how the destruction caused by the whites affected even our dogs.
