HOW HYDRAULICS WORK - 25 TON LOG SPLITTER

A breakdown of how hydraulic systems work, using a SpeeCo 25 ton log splitter as an example of a simple hydraulic cycle.
The system is basically a moor, whether gas or electric, that turns a pump and pushes oil through a filter from the hydraulic reservoir tank and pushes it into the control valve, which controls direction of the flow to operate the hydraulic cylinder's back and forth motion.
I find it amazing how much power output can be generated from pushing oil through hoses.

If I needed to replace a hydraulic hose,would i have to drain the fluid somewhat and remove the hose and measure it and order a replacement,how does one go about this.?
@OntarioFirewoodResource
@OntarioFirewoodResource 25 күн бұрын
@eastside0434 you only have to drain the system if you're taking off the hose between the pump and the reservoir. Any line that starts from the top of the reservoir and runs above it will always drain into the reservoir after use. Thanks for watching

No problem. Just a guess, but maybe there's an O-ring that needs to be replaced in your pump. I have to say that my SpeeCos are great machines. The lips on the beam that guid the wedge have bent out of shape but just need banging back into shape, one has a flange leak on the reservoir and I've replaced 2 or 3 valves because they leak and now I just put a hose clamp and rubber on them so they stop leaking.

Ah yes, I made that mistake, tje return line is above the filter and the clear hose is the feed line

I have a 25 ton Speeco splitter. When I was done using it for the season today, I changed the oil in the B&S engine. I then greased the rail the wedge rides in. While I was doing that the engine acted like it was running out of gas which it probably was. I put some premium gas in and ran it again but it was surging and the ram would not work forward or backward. There is enough fluid in reservoir. I am at a loss as to what happened. Is there a shear bolt where the engine meets the hydraulic system? Or what are your thoughts as to what is going on?

Check the lovejoy bushing, make sure it's not warn out through warping, missing sections or gone completely. This is just a guess. But maybe something happened inside the ram. Overall, I'm kinda clueless as to what happened. Maybe you lost compression, power is gone somewhere in the system

@@OntarioFirewoodResource I checked the lovejoy connection and the key in the pump side collar had come out. It had been wearing for some time. The whole connection needs to be replaced. I found one for $39. Thanks for your input!

New subscriber here!! The cam that connects the pump to the engine…I THINK you called it a “love joint (?)”….I hear through hearing aids so I’m sure I’m not hearing it right…any way…can you explain how this is supposed to work? I have a dirty hands 22 ton splitter and the ram just stopped. A friend thinks that the two pieces are supposed to be permanently engaged. We think that’s why it’s not working but I’m not sure how it’s supposed to work. Looking for help.
@OntarioFirewoodResource
@OntarioFirewoodResource Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for subscribing! Yes the "lovejoy" is supposed to be matched up on both end with the plastic or rubing bushing in between, which gets worn and will not trasmit the engine power to the pump. Think of it like a u-joint and driveshaft assembly

@@OntarioFirewoodResource outstanding. I have a Dirty Hands which gotten eaten up during Covid and is now no more! My luck! Anyway, the 22 ton has a coupler match of 3/4 to 1/2 inch which proved to be a challenge to find…but I did find one. Thanks for your help…looking forward to checking out some more of your content!!

I bought a used splitter and want to change all the hoses and the control valve. Is the control valve a standard item or is it made specific for that particular ram and is the system under any pressure when the engine is off? Thanks
@OntarioFirewoodResource
@OntarioFirewoodResource 2 жыл бұрын
No there are things you can play around with , there has to be some balance within the system, that's all. You can get the highest flow rated parts, just make sure the oil reservoir is big enough because you can get overheating. Stay tuned for my high output splitter that is under repair. I designed the system myself

@@OntarioFirewoodResource This one here is pretty heavy duty, probably a commercial one. It has a Honda GX 340 11hp with a 45 ton ram on it. Kind of overkill for a homeowner but I’d like to go into the firewood business after I’m retired. I have around 8 more years until that happens. Besides, I love splitting and stacking firewood and I don’t even have a fireplace or wood stove. So, I’ll keep it busy somehow. I figure this machine will last forever.

Ya that's overkill, my machine has a 13 ho and 35 ton ram. Make sure you have a two-stage pump and have a fire in the backyard every nowband then 🙂

Thanks Thanks watching. If you upgrade the motor and pump, you will overheat the oil because the reservoir would have to be made bigger to hold more oil

@@OntarioFirewoodResource Sorry, I forgot to add, I am running a 3 point splitter off the back of my tractor and trying to make it work of the tractors hydraulics. I am currently running 11.5 seconds to full extension of the ram 22" span (per the factory specs) I just thought the valve itself might have an adjustment on it to let more oil through.
