You can't compare yourself with the owner of the band ,Naija standard is one man business, no involvement from the government so it's difficult for the government to intervene and regulate things. You guys should appreciate KSA in particular this gentleman in this interview, don't forget you came from the village into his house and seeing you for the first time called you "my friend " and gave you opportunities. What people were saying is that band members spent their money anyhow without proper planning, it wasn't the amount but the issue is the little you earn how did you manage it and that was what people were saying. But then, I still believe there should have been royalties for all the participating team in each of the recording/album. That is, apart from the money shared at the end of every show! This interview is a masterpiece; one of the best I ever listened to. The personality, Rasaki Aladokun, is honest and down to earth. No pretension at all. The truth is that King Sunny Ade has done a lot to promote Nigerian music worldwide. He met a system and definitely improved on it. What Aladokun is saying is that the young band leaders of today should move with the times and adapt their management styles to global best practice. Sunny Ade did not meet technology back then, but today's band leaders have that access through the internet. They can learn how to manage a band and keep everybody happier than their predecessors did. Although there's "no problem" between the two, I suggest that Aladokun get Sunny Ade's phone number and give him a call, some day. Just say, "Good morning Sir" and move on. It's good to have honest people like you around.

While I am not making a case for the band leaders. I see the band boys as being inconsiderate and selfish. They do not consider that it is the band leaders that sort out logistics and do everything to keep the brand they represent going. Take, for instance, servicing of instruments and vehicles. Sorting out PR works and also taking care of non staff like the urchins and omo oniles to aid smooth performance at every show. Most band leaders face most of the brunt while these band boys are behind the scene and even get loads of goodwill courtesy of their band leaders. I remember vividly when an ex-band boy of KSA was caught with drugs at the airport. Journalists were quick to link him to KSA in their headlines. Do people know how much damage that will do to the brand of KSA? Why didn't they link the bnnd boy's atrocity to another band member?We should cut these leaders some slack too, even though the band leaders have their many excesses too.

I listened and enjoyed the interview. Like some had commented previously l could understands Mr Aladokun views and the genesis of his journey. Literally very interesting. I would like to say that, obviously, this is Nigeria. Establishing a business: be it band, spare parts, groceries store, law firm, to mention but few it's a tough tasks in Nigeria in terms of financing the business. If a business is financed through bank loans, you understands what that means in Nigeria setting. All these band gentlemen don't understand what the leaders had gone through. They should be very appreciative. The interviewer seems to be one sided in his process. Ejire before you started your business l guess you had gone through a lots of ups and downs

I think what he meant by saying KSA isn’t is boss is the fact that that no longer applies to his current situation. KSA was his boss in the past, but not now. In that regard, he was right. A lot of pros and cons can be learned from both sides of the coin: band leader versus band members/men (not boys, since they are grown men). We live and we learn. None is perfect! By and large, great music making by these gems. Kudos on the interview!

Nigbati TV's interview of Rasaki Aladokun was the first Yoruba interview of its kind of past outstanding performers of either the music or movie industries by any TV station, that I watched from the beginning to the end. The interviewer, Mr. Ejire Eyila, did a good job the way he objectively conducted the interview. He asked relevant questions and slightly pressed Mr. Aladokun on certain controversial topics without being perceived as holding water for King Sunny Ade. Mr. Aladokun without a doubt is a very proficient professional talking drummer, as proven by his dexterity during the program and I enjoyed the interview. However, Mr. Aladokun, suddenly forgot the hundreds of miles he travelled looking for no other musician, but King Sunny Ade, when he was a nobody. The conditions he happily and freely accepted when he was an unknown drummer, became reason for whining. When Mr. Mr. Aladokun was reminded by the interviewer that "people" have said Aladokun and the rest like him got compensated at the time for the work they did, he pivoted to the usual lame excuse that, it was nothing compared with what the "owner" of the band and some members made. One notable observation was Aladokun's resentment towards King Sunny Ade which was openly displayed throughout the interview even though he unsuccessfully tried to hide it. He avoided mentioning Sunny Ade's name throughout the interview, until he was compelled to do so, by Mr. Eyila's request for clarification. His description of the two times he had interacted with King Sunny Ade over the years, was used to gloat, and not in a happy reunion type of interaction. Rather than be grateful to King Sunny Ade for the opportunities and exposure given him, he chose to be an ingrate with the classic " Olorun ti mon ipe ni ao jo (jor) wa ni ibi yi ni oni..... so a ko le sope tori enikan ni gbogbo bi a se travel kakiri. Sebi eeyan kan nan-an lo gbe awon nan-an dide". Funny, very funny. To wrap it up, Mr. Aladokun is a very talented professional drummer and I like him. But he and King Sunny Ade need to find a way to resolve any outstanding issues between them. For Aladokun to make comparative analysis between how things are run in American music industry (while using the group Grateful Dead as an example) with how things were run in among juju music industry in the 1980s, is like comparing apples with oranges. Yes, things need to change at home between band leader/owner, band members and recording companies, in terms of defined renumerations. Contrary however, to Mr. Aladokun's assertion that music cannot be run as a regular business, I disagree. The owner of the band employs musicians just as a company owner employs his/her employees pays their salaries and offer them occasional bonuses or percentage, when they do better than usual. I wish Mr. Aladokun more successes in his future endeavors.

I totally agreed with your conclusion that Rasaki Aladokun should find a way to reconcile with KSA for his unceremonious departure from the Band while in America for engagement concert.. He ought to have informed KSA which I believed he would not have anything against him leaving the Band . Fola Oshundare (Thousand wire) wisely informed KSA when leaving and afterwards both of them are still in good talking terms ( accordingly to his interview with Nigbati TV recently). I wish him (Rasaki) all the best and advise that he should try and get in touch with his former Boss (KSA) for amicable settlement since they are not on speaking terms according to him(Rasaki)

Alhaji Rasaki Aladokun view is summed up in the analogy he made in the interview. He did not say that the band boys and the leaders should be equally rewarded. But rather he said if the Band leaders can build 3 houses, the boys should also be able to build one. He also said that every band members handled different instruments which they already mastered before being engaged by the band leaders, and as such one cannot say that the leaders taught them their crafts and cannot be said to be their master in the actual sense of it. In other word it is division of labor.The input of each member ensured the success of entire band. He noted that their craft has a short life span but the reward they get cannot guarantee their future because job is not pensionable. The worst is the way they are quickly dispensed with when they are no longer relevant or when a better person comes on board. Aladokun concluded that bandleader runs a band like a business and pay salary to BB which is not even competitive with what obtained in the civil service( this was attested to in another interview granted by one of obey bb). So how can one be happy working his entire lifetime under these grim conditions, especially when the opposite is the case with the BL who live in opulence, build massive houses, ride latest model of cars, carry a lot of mistresses and maintain large families, while the BB scrapped by. As a young teenager I have always noticed this trend and know that one day the BB eyes would open and that is what is happening right now. People are getting to know their rights and are demanding that they be treated fairly. As humans we may want to take side with the BL ( just the way you have done) because we see them as successful, we see them as a kind of tin god and think they are flawless. But if the truth be told every labourer is worthy of his wage. Their craft is their source of livelihood and they need to be adequately remunerated so as to make a decent living and take care of their families, not as most of them ended in abject penury and untimely death except for those Aladokun said who foresaw their bleak future and left the stage when ovation was loudest.

Though there could be moral issues, you can hardly fault anybody for taking care of his economic interest within what is considered legal. It is now left for the government and practitioners to get to the drawing board for the benefit of all.

May I thank you for bringing these phenomenal men who were behind some of the super monstrous albums of KSA to light. My view of the interview is mixed. I like the fact that Rasaki was able to express himself freely but that said, I got the impression of someone who kind of got carried away with the little fame he was enjoying during the time he was with KSA. I thought my ears were blocked when I heard his comments towards the end of the interview about his relationship with KSA + how he absconded from the band. I thought aloud that was this not the person who found his way to Bariga so that he could play with KSA and KSA not even knowing him accepted him & he would later be included in the band, make albums & travel the world with KSA. Some of these people saying these negative things about KSA in my opinion would be worse band leaders should they be in his position. It’s a shame though that Rasaki could easily forget how he got to KSA and the love KSA showed him. Nonetheless, overall it’s just one of those negative interviews by band members who never planned well for the future. Can you imagine everything has ended by being a cabman! Hmmmm… aye le o! No wonder KSA became very wise, unpredictable & no longer foolhardy.

I think most of the time, many of the band members of these maestros are just being entitled. None of them have claimed to be owed salaries or entitlements but claim neglect. How many past band members are they gonna be catering for? However, it is pertinent for instrumentalists and band members to come together and design a roadmap towards ensuring royalties are secured for contributions to any and every music work. Each person's contribution needs to be formally and legally outlined so they can benefit from it for as long as possible. Blues, Jazz, Rock, Disco etc people are still benefiting from decades old songs due ti remixes and covers by new artistes. Everyone involved from songwriters, to instrumentalists and producers get credits and get paid for their work. Even their offsprings benefit. It is so sad that gifted people never get to eat from their gifts. Once you're part of an album, your royalties should continue as long as the songs live. Juju, Gospel, Fuji, Afrobeat and Highlife bands should take a cue from the hiphop and afrobeats people. Producers don't play with their recognition and credits anymore

@@seunbanwo1828 Yes you are so right. They all have a sense of entitlement. The other point they all seem to miss is the fact they all shared the glory of being under KSA. True, KSA is only just one man just like the talking drummers, back-up & all other instrumentalists and that is why any band leader can choose to add to their band or drop any personnel at anytime. The same principle happens with football it’s either you fit in or you go to another club. It is ruthless but that is the reality. Band leaders will always get an instrumentalist no matter what. One question Nigbati TV should be asking is: What do these instrumentalists do with the money shared on stage considering that during KSA’s peak even up till today KSA played atleast 5-6 days a week? Sunny has said it, he said, his band members never saved.

They should be content with the money they got and the exposure and most importantly, they should form unions and associations that will guarantee their future earnings not just for social engagements. Map out a payment and future earning structure for their work. It is disheartening to see the musicians on those evergreen records live in penury and bad health in their old age.

Furthermore, the relationship between KSA and his men were employer and employee not independent contractor like the American setup that he is describing. So band men should free him, take responsibility for their possible lack of planning and not just blame the band leader.

The local music industry should be improved, updated and regulated to include some forms tenured employment schemes and pension plans where and when possible. The times are changing and the lots of the backup workers in the band should also be periodically upgraded.

Èjìrę, I enjoyed your show, and it is one of the best interviews you have ever done. Because you held the bull by the horn. By asking tough questions. But I was a little bit disappointed that Mr Rasaki Aladokun was ungrateful to God Almighty for everything that he had achieved during his tenure with King Sunny Ade. Anybody can accomplish his or her dreams through dedication and hard work. Which he did by finding his way to the King's abode. But he should also remember that if he wasn't welcome at the King's band at that time, most likely he might not be able to be where he is today. If his caliber is still thinking that he was cheated by King Sunny Ade at this time, after almost twenty years of being a band member of the king, it was most unfortunate. If he knows what to do as a band leader, he could have as well formed his own band before now and use his own name and his own resources to treat his band members the way he wanted to be treated as an example for others to follow. So that King Sunny Ade and other band leaders will change the way they might have been treating their band members. If King sunny Ade is as bad as he, Rasaki would like the whole world to believe, by now Sunny Ade might not have a band. King Sunny Ade is a good man. He has the fear of the Lord in his heart. Is by God's grace that keeps him alive and still keeps him going at his age. Àwøn yorùbá bø," Wøn ní oore pę aşiwèrè gbàgbé." When Mr Rasaki was in need, he did not say anything like this then. But now, he saw his time that he stays with King Sunny Ade as a waste of time. What a shame. He even felt reluctant to mention the king's name. You're in America right now through the sweat of Sunny Ade. Mr. Rasaki, you are an in-grate. People like you are the ones who make it difficult to render help to others who are in need. This is awesome. The bottom line is the system on how things are run in Nigeria. God bless bro Rasak ( Rosko as well used to call him ). Unless there is a change in the system , things will be the same. And finally like bro Rasaki pointed out, KSA is still the best among those band leaders . If that is the case then the band members should begin to form alliance and start to fight for themselves. Lead talking drummer for Wasiu Ayinde ( Kunle Ayanlowo) has left the band for couple of months now, there is no one talking about him, this did not affect the rest of the band members continuing their work with Wasiu Ayinde. Those band leaders are too powerful in the scheme of things .

Absolutely. it's a sad reality that those band members did not get their due compensation for their work but it is not peculiar to KSA so he should not be targeted for blame. Rather it is a developmental problem as the music industry in Nigeria is still evolving. The major cause of the problem is the lack of exposure and education on the part of all the stakeholders, Both the leader and the band members. Definitely, they are not equals as KSA is the brand that the fans recognise but there ought to be a signed contract that protects the interests of the band members too. Also, it might be a good idea for the band members to organise themselves into professional associations for collective bargaining in the music industry. e.g the drummers can have their association likewise the guitarists and saxophonists too. Ejirè.. l hope you have a robust sharing agreement for Gbenga Omonitan & Sunday Aiyeoba & Co on future KZbin royalty sharing, who knows what d future holds for all dis ur videos on KZbin/ d web. But lf not, pls make sure u have a signed agreement in place before u do ur next video account on KSA musical history. ln Baba Oni interview, he left KSA band 1985.. 37yrs ago but still needs KSA help which makes sense if it's only help. But we all need to understand there was no signed contract or partnership agreement btw KSA & his band members, this is why he can hire & fire multiple times. We honestly need to give kudos to KSA for maintenaining & sustaining some of his band members from 1966 -1983 (17yrs), 1985(19yrs) & 2007 (32yrs).. Can u imagine if KSA was not wiser during d 1983 Japan sabotage on d plane by his core band members, he would have simply been destroyed by d actions of d toxic members & there will not be King Of Juju music today. 1983 KSA tactics: he gave them what they wanted in Japan but realised d imminent dangers & sacked them all & formed a new band. This simply means dat KSA his d music, without KSA there is no KSA band. And without d band members, there is still KSA band. 1966-2022 *56yrs on stage, KSA @ 77yrs old is still dancing & waxing music putting in d hours & shifts to sustain himself. He refused to retire or sit @ home & regrets. This royalty investigation shld equally go round all 9ja musician & not limited to KSA for fairness, since he wasn't d only musician in Nigeria. Exactly. That's one of the things I was gonna point out when he said KSA was never his boss. He err there. Even at work, your manager is your boss, not to talk of the owner of the company. He was not a contractor(independent drummer) to the band but a full member and KSA was and still the leader of the band. KSA can always hire instrumentalists and singers. In fact something I learnt sometimes in life is that Michael Jackson, Sunny, Fela, Beyonce etc can always hire instrumentalists but the one with the voice, thr lead singer is the face. You might not even know how to write songs, but as long as you have that voice and the face of a band, you will be richer than other band members because they can do without you.

Bolaji. You nailed it hundred percent. KSA is not perfect. Western world operates in a way totally different from ours. How many band leader in Europe or USA can single handedly manage big band the African way?Band leaders in Nigeria in the past struggle to keep their band and depend mainly on shows not on peanuts from record companies! This guys are all running KSA down because he is still standing. How many of KSA’s peer (alive)are still operating at his level presently? Not a single one! I’ve never met KSA one on one all I know about him is trough his work. In the world setting, it is always the big record labels who are getting the bulk of money made on records released to the market. (A good example is MJ) what Michael Jackson got on sales of his records is peanut compare to the big company who he released his works with. (do your research). We have all forgotten the damage done to music and films industry in Nigeria by record pirates? Go and ask numerous musicians who did not survive it. If any of this guys form and run their own band successful and in a correct way be it home or abroad then they can point fingers! Till then, let them guard their loins and stop trying to rubbish KSA

Some of you lots don't save the for raining days, we see the flamboyant life styles you people live back then, I know all KSA band boys as I've been following KSA since my primary school days. Who knows most of you if not KSA that brought you lots to limelight, just be thankful for whom you are and be grateful.

The truth is that in Nigeria,if you are employed to do work in a private setup, your salary is all you are entitle to, no pension except you safe by yourself. But i disagree with Mr Rasak that the band leader is not your boss, in my opinion KSA was your boss, he paid you for 20years, he took you along on tours abroad,he was responsible for you, if you have grievances about pay you wete free to discuss it or peacefully exit the band. But your leaving by absconding from USA, he wouldn't be happy and you should actually try to reconcile with him. I love you and enjoy your story of determination. I left my boss too after 7 years to stand on my own but i willingly resigned, I'm still in good relationship with my boss because I learnt from him too.

Ejire, you are doing a good job. However you need to structure your questions in manner that will make things clear rather than just drawing sympathy. 1. He said things must change, fine. There are something you got to ask. Who pays for transportation, if any of the instrument got spoiled or old who replaces them, who pays the office staff that are not seen. If that is the leaders'responsibilities, you don't expect him to share things equally with you. He said he has to transport his instrument by himself in us. Does he do it here. So you need to consider the structure first. If the responsibilities of moving the band is his, you have taking it as his band and you are just a worker.

I really cant blame band leaders or the group members because in those days playing music, just like Artists on stage wasn't a standard business like Cadbury, UAC etc but a one man business even as it is till today. How many "One man business " pays you any entitlement when you leave their services; even if you read marketing and your marketing experience brought all the customers that brought fortune to the company, you'll only go with your last salary even when the business had given birth to another lucrative business and as they are not usually bound by any law since there is usually no written agreement, there is nothing you can do. Your best bet is to use such a company as a stepping stone to form yours if you want to prosper. Usually, if the company becomes strong with time, the children would have grown up and as usual are already Directors who may even consider you an old cargo and send you packing without any notice. As for Band leaders. the risk there is that, they own and maintain the instruments, vehicles etc unlike in US where you bring ur own drum, etc. He had to pay those who write songs for them and a host of other PR issues to keep his name and he must be a good "Human manager" to stay long in the business. He is also carrying the biggest risk bcause if the business collapsed, he'll suffer alone and group members will still go and continue their life elsewhere. However, eyes have opened 😛 and i believe both parties should know better now before working together.

Baba Rasaki is clearly a genius cos all the work he did with KSA are great. But i think he fumbled in a few places in this interview. 1. He said the band leader is not his boss. That's nt fair. If you work in a company as an engineer, as a full-time staff, is the owner of the company your boss or not? Even your head of dept is your boss, as long as you still work there. 2. The songs her sang at this end were uncalled for. You played in a band when there was no structure and no deed. Now you are singing that igbeyin loju. That's not fair. 3. There is a difference btw playing in a band that is a group band, and being hired by a band leader who is the owner of his business to play. KSA owns his business/company. He owns the risk as well. When they left his instruments in Japan and he came to sack all of them, did the band members contribute money to boy another instrument for him? He faced the risks. When he had issue with Abioro, did they help him to pay Gani Fawehinmi? If anything happens to his band, they woukd find their ways. 4. When most of them were playing with him and other big stars, what they were earning from shows were more than the salaries of bank managers. No retirement plan. They drink, smoke and lavish. KSA doesn't even drink or smoke. There are band members who save something and live good lives. Some left his band for more than 30 years and still came to claim gratuity. Let's be circumspect abeg.
