Part 5 of the cargo trailer camper conversion. I start insulating the trailer with rigid insulation boards. I go through the process of insulating the walls, roof and floor.

Home Depot has a product that looks like cardboard but it’s plastic and is white in 4x8 sheets. It’s the same thing that RV manufactures use only there’s is black.

An idea for the underside foam panel protection would be to coat the exposed side with "poor mans fiberglass". Lots on KZbin about it. Its basically painters drop cloth and waterproof glue. Makes for a pretty durable coating. Great job on the trailer.

Thanks! That's definitely a good idea. I haven't done anything to it yet after 1 year and it's still holding up great. Thanks for the watching

the insulation wedges also provides the needed thermal break between the aluminum ceiling and the steel rafters.

If you flip your springs from bottom of your axel to the top you will have more clearance and you can add your fenders again. 🙂👍❤️🇨🇦

I ended up just building my own heavy duty fenders. If I am going to do any suspension mods, I'll likely swap out the 4" drop axle for a straight one and gain 4" clearance

What did you start slapping up foam board right behind the undercoater. And dump acetone or whatever chemical that will devolve the type of spray foam on hand. Works like brand new

The gaps in the floor are there for the water to have a place to leave the trailer when the roof leaks. I recommend that everyone who buys an enclosed trailer immediately seal the roof better than the manufacturer. When you see all the flaws in the build quality you should not trust that they sealed the roof properly.

Those rigid foam wedges/shims to support the ceiling are a great idea. Rain pools all the time on my flat "one piece" roof cargo and trailer it seems random where all the water dumps off. Do you think it would have been possible to add/glue the 2nd layer of insulation as one continuous "thermal break" right over top the first layer and then clamp/screw it down over top with those furring strips? (Like they do on solid concrete basement wall interiors). I realize you would loose an additional 3/4" per side though. I am concerned about my aluminum trailer framing conducting heat into the trailer in direct sunlight. Also what about protecting the foam in the the Chuck Box underbelly with truck bed liner spray? This vid has to be one of the top trailer insulation videos out there. Thanks!
@JoelTremblayCA
@JoelTremblayCA 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ojo! If you checkout the ceiling finish video I show how I added strapping and an additional layer of insulation to stop the thermal bridging as you have mentioned. That's a great idea to protect the under layer of insulation. The only thing is that any kind of spray paint (that is not water based) will eat away and degrade the insulation.

Buy some corrugated plastic sheets (like yard signs) to mount to the underside to protect the insulation.

Hey what difference in temps did you notice in the trailer compared to the outside ? Also during the winter and summer times?
@JoelTremblayCA
@JoelTremblayCA Жыл бұрын
The trailer has been comfortable year-round compared to the outside. I run a diesel heater in the winter for heat. Make sure to have good ventilation is essential, window and roof vent open to allow air flow.

@JoelTremblayCA
@JoelTremblayCA 2 жыл бұрын
I actually didn't use any glue, I ran out at that point. I did use a tube of foam glue for the walls, but it was not needed. I cut the foam boards so that they would fit in snug and then tape on the seams to hold it in place. Thanks for watching!

@@JoelTremblayCA Thanks for replying, Joel. That's what I did on the walls on my trailer as well, the rigid foam fit snug without glue. I'll probably do the same for the ceiling as well, and the tape will probably further help keep it in place. Thanks!

Does the pink poly foam have a vapor barrier on the aluminum skin side?

No it does not. I did not install a vapor barrier because I want the wall assembly to have the ability to dry - inside>out - outside

Can you please share what is the inside temp in summer and winter without AC or heater under this insulation? I am worried about the aluminum skin that conducts the heat / cold too easily.
@JoelTremblayCA
@JoelTremblayCA Жыл бұрын
That's the whole reason for insulation, it slows down the thermal transfer from inside>out or vice versa. This is know as R value. Higher the R value = slower thermal transfer. I've been comfortable in this trailer when it's +25°C (with window and fan open) to -25°C (with a heater of course)

Is the pink insulation board better than the foil cover?
@JoelTremblayCA
@JoelTremblayCA 9 ай бұрын
In this instance I would say yes. The foil based stuff needs and airspace in order to function properly. It may claim higher R value than the pink stuff but it will greatly lose its thermal transfer properties as temps drop. Thanks for watching!
