I don't annotate my books, but whenever I read a book that I own I always write my thoughts on the book on a blank page at the back of the book. Here I would say what my favorite scene was, how I felt about the romance or friendship, my general thought on the book and plot and my rating. Its not that detailed but I like looking back at books I read years ago and see what I thought.

I was trained from an early age that it's a no-no to write or highlight in any book, but I am thinking of using notebooks, because I am a sucker for those since I still like to write my stories by hand first, to write my reviews instead of going off my memory for Goodreads. I love that everyone has their own style and how it develops and evolves. My opinion, it's your book do what you want to get a better experience out of it. Also, the blanket you were using is the same one my youngest has. He's gotten too tall, but he likes to cover up his blue lion Lincoln with it. 😊😀

I started Twilight and bought a cheap used copy to annotate a couple weeks ago and I do very similarly to your process. Margin notes, color code with midliners and matching sticky tabs (the 5 color version of the ones you use) and legend in the beginning. I love the idea of matching pens as well to speed up the process while reading, and then going back after to highlight and tab after. And I completely agree that tearing into a book in that way is a lot of fun, and also very "aesthetic." It's my first time going all-in on annotating and its so much fun!

I love annotating my books. I am always changing my system for tabbing. The only colors that don't change are, green for quotes, orange for happy Emotions, yellow for angry emotions, and purple is almost always magic system. And of course pink is for romance and friendships. I have 10 different color tabs right now but I am hoping to find less colors. 10 is just kind of to much, I would love to have 7 or 8 at the most. And change what certain colors mean. I love the way you annotate, very interesting system. Hope you have a great day as well as your little girl.
@Cookiesy4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree that you can't annotate until you've started reading and noticing things. I change what colours mean specifically because I read multiple different genre's and they just don't really work having the same colours for the same things across the board. Plus I'm a mood reader, I have books that I've focussed on writing for and books that literally just have tabs all over the place and scribbles saying "YAS!" or "WTF!" lol. Definitely a preference thing though :)

Ooo, thank you for this video! I liked seeing how your system has evolved over the years. It makes perfect sense for your colors to mean different things from book to book; it seems like it'd be pretty difficult to maintain the same system unless the reader only reads one type of fiction. It might be a waste to have a "pink for romance" tab when it's a horror story or thriller. My first English professor at college said we learn less by highlighting and more by taking notes, so that's what I do when I want to annotate. That keeps things consistent across formats -- audiobooks, ebooks, library books, and my own paper books -- when everything goes in a single dot-grid notebook.

Lol, I use the same tabs and pens! They’re so handy! I like to read slowly, so tabbing and writing things slowing me down doesn’t bother me much, but I totally understand how you use the pens to just underline and tab later, that’s a good trick. I’ve been journaling, my annotations, since I noticed that I have a lot of of thoughts about what I’m reading, so I tab the book, and do an outline in pencil, and then in the journal, I write the quote or the part that made me I guess “react” if that’s the right term, and then I write my thoughts. Then I use post it’s to kind of write down my thoughts after every chapter (every 2-3 if the chapters are short) 😅 I enjoy watching different kinds of annotation videos, they’re all so different, and so unique to each person, and I haven’t tried to annotate an audiobook yet, but that’s going to be a beautiful challenge. Thank you!

I enjoyed this! Because 95% of the books I buy and read end up in my classroom library, I tend to only annotate books I’m planning on teaching, so the last few books I’ve annotated are Beartown, Just Mercy, and Anger is a Gift. However, my method is pretty boring; I tend to just use pencil. I like your color-coding method, and I may have to adopt something similar to make it easier for me break down the different kinds of annotations I make, which would make it easier to discuss. Thank you for sharing! ❤️

Thank you for this wonderful video. I resonate a lot with how you annotate, and that it is different for each book. One thing for me is that I'm super careful about highlighters as they can bleed through to the next page, depending on the paper quality. So underlining is definitely my usual go to instead of highlighters.

💛This was so fun to watch! When I started wanting to annotate my partner was horrified. They are a child of librarians and they all looked at me like I confessed to a murder. Our compromise is that I write in pencil. Which in the end worked out well because this way I don't lose all my stuff (pens etc) plus I make a lot of grammatical errors so I can just erase it and write it again. But I love your system! It's like reading someone's diary but a lot more fun because you already know you won't read sensitive stuff not for you. (or I assume)

I have started to reread my favourite books and have been tentatively tabbing them but it is so new to me so I am still working things out. In my recent reread I was frustrated by my lack of colours! I don't highlight yet though, although sometimes I write in pencil in the margins. Loved the examples you chose as well so we could see how your annotating system has developed over time ^.^

This is so pleasing! I have 2 types of books - those I'm not willing to write in (my nice hardcovers that I've collected - most of them are older) and those I am willing to write in (any books that I had for a class, or paperbacks. I don't do nearly as detailed annotations as you do, but sometimes word definitions or translations if I have to look something up, to save myself the time the next time I read it (I reread almost every book that I keep at some point). I think I'd retain a lot more if I were as detailed as you, but I'm an impatient reader. That's why I have to reread. :) Thank you so much for sharing your method. Oh, I noticed someone asked if you would lend an annotated book. On that topic, I recently purchased a couple of used books from different sources that came with tabs still in place. I was kind of excited because I wanted to see what the previous owner had noted. However, neither book had anything to indicate what the tabs were for, and there were so many that I couldn't figure out what was being noted. Hahaha!

I actually ran out of Blue which was the color I was using for sections about Aster that made me feel seen and so now I feel like I have to stop until I get more tabs delivered on Thursday. Thanks for sharing the links to the supplies you use. I like the large pack of tabs that sounds excellent. I'm not sure if/when I'll feel more comfortable writing in my books. Annotating after you stop reading is such a good idea. I might start doing that bc I have noticed that it really slows me down to just annotate as I go. I have a lot of highlighters and pens in various abnormal colors that I use for annotating and for class work / notes. I have trouble reading a text that is only in one cover and isn't double spaced so it's a must for me. Finally I really only annotate books I know I'm going to be reviewing. This is fascinating. I'm curious to see how other people enjoy their reading. I'm a casual tabber. In other words, your very first system where I would just point out sentences or parragraphs that stood out to me. I often find myself highlighting and annotating more in e-books than physical copies. 🤷🏽♀️

“If you haven’t read it, try not to read any of the pages.” You knew we were trying to read over your shoulder 😂😂

I've done some videos about annotating in books but they look so rubbish compared to this, I love it! I also love that your notes look similar to mine for a first read through! Very reactionary and a decent amount of swearing at bad characters lol

Thank you so much for doing this video. I have just started for the first time to annotate in a book that I am reading. I have to admit the first time I placed a mark on the page it made me very uncomfortable. That was the hardest part I'm about 175 pages in the book and I am loving it and I feel like I am getting so much more out of the story and because this is a series I think it will be easier it I need to go back iI need to check something out, Sorry for rambling on but I am really excited and thankful for your ideas. Take care

I love this!!! Thank you! You're helping me at least figure out how I want to annotate in the future... because I never really know where or how to start and I would love to fully annotate a book like you do❤️💗
