I'd like to start by saying, you are right. Most cops are pretty cool and got into law enforcement for the right reasons. However, policing for profit is absolutely a big problem all over the U.S. Generally its not the officers themselves behind it. Either they are incentivised by politicians to write tickets (i.e. write x number if you want to keep your job), or municipalities install things like speed and red light cameras. Things that are shown not only to have ZERO impact on safety, but also may increase the number of incidents because people are way more likely to go full ABS panic stop to avoid an expensive automated ticket, and get rear ended. Bottom line is, there are little towns whose economies have been in decline for the last few decades all over with crappy, desperate local government who generate more than HALF of their total revenue through tickets. There are little towns in Georgia and Louisiana who have recently been busted for generating over 90 PERCENT of their total revenue through fines and fees.

I used to have a car with 'go faster stripes' on it. I was speeding slightly when we all passed 3 state troopers on the side of the road, but I was only going as fast as the 10 cars ahead of me. Guess who they tried to pull over? Me. Fortunately I saw the state trooper coming up at speed (but no lights) behind me. And also luckily, an Army convoy was in the right lane and I was just about at the front of it. I passed them, took the next exit and drove on some unknown road that ended at a logging company. The trooper was stuck with the convoy blocking them from the exit. No one was at the logging company, so I just waited it out. Had a snack, then went back on the highway. And yes in Louisiana, the cops are there trying to make money. And they will ask if you have cash and if you say yes they will take it and say it must be drug money. If you don't say yes they will claim they smell pot and then search you and the car and take anything of value even though you had no drugs and never used any.

LOL, see now that's the way to evade, done things like that myself a few times. One is kinda funny and a good lesson in not driving a flashy car. I was hanging with a bunch of Honda ricer guys(late 90s). They had gone to a parking lot and set up a bunch of cones to play around. We were having fun then all of a sudden there were cops coming from every direction. Most of them took off running, a few stopped, I in my not flashy Datsun 510 just stopped in a parking spot and leaned my seat back. Those that stopped the cops stopped for a bit, took their info, told them to stay put, then went and joined the chase. I however must have just looked like a parked beater, no cop approached me. After the cops left, I said later to the guys left sitting and casually drove away.

Funny story. I was on my way home from visiting a friend, going 80 in a 65 on the freeway. Other traffic was passing me but of course me in my 944 got pulled over. Now obviously I was speeding but it’s frustrating when everyone else is also speeding, (even the officer himself was going above the posted limit). Now obviously I was annoyed but I owned up to it. I didn’t argue with the cop or try and fight with him. I stated my case but of course it didn’t matter. Fast forward about a month and a half later. I was involved in a very minor accident. You’ll never guess who the officer was that showed up. You guessed it! Guy that pulled me over. I thought I was done for. To my amazement, he was kind, and was even happy to see me. He got out of his car and was asking me questions about my 944 and even checked out under the hood. He let me go and even console me for what had happened because I was beating myself up pretty bad. (Was my fault rolled off the clutch into someone in a difficult intersection) If you bring attention to yourself, you are going to get pulled over, and piss them off. Regardless of what other people are doing. If you treat them like humans, it might come back and save your butt in the long run.

When I was on one of our local police departments part of your annual evaluation was the number of tickets you wrote. You were expected to write a minimum of 60 tickets per month. The amount of the ticket was broken down to 50% to the department that issued the ticket, 25% to the police academy, and 25% to the state. So there is money being made.

Casey, I'm a 26 year old. I came from a C7 Corvette and now have a 03 S2000 for track/autocross/nice weather and a bright red 2015 STi. My S2000 has aero and I have been stopped for my exhaust (which is a header+HFC+single exit with muffler). And being respectful and telling the officer it's a car I use for competition to keep their roads safe has usually faired me well even though I haven't been speeding. However My 100% stock STI has cops follow me for miles just watching it. It's so bad that I'm considering selling the car. I seriously have gotten to the point after 10minutes I just pull over. Usually they throw on their lights and ask me what's going on. I just pop the hood and said it's running hot and they go on. My 6 hour drive from Florida (traveling nurse) I pulled off over 20 times and was pulled over twice. One officer was extremely cool when he pulled me over, he mentioned if he had the car he would be Hooning it. He asked about my Scrubs and mentioned his sister was a nurse. He told me where a good restaurant on the state lines was and told me to follow him. It looked like the opposite of Baby Driver!

I've thrown Bilsteins I'm the front last year and am doing the rear now that it's warming. Also replaced all bushings for from end linkage. As you've said in previous videos.. and 80s racecar doesn't handle like a 2000+ model. I've grown used to the balanced weight and when the rear end gives out on turns. But I'm always careful. In the state where I am, its a “super speeder” state, so if your going 5 mph or less, its a warning only as long as your not in a school zone or high ped area, acting really stupid, etc. They largely won’t bother with you. If your clocked going 14 mph or less, your fined but its no insurance points off, typically if your cool and the cop is cool, they’ll write the ticket down to 14 if your busted under 20. On the rural interstates, State police will rarely bother with you under 80, because they are focused on “super speeder” fines, but local police will. I respectfully disagree, speed enforcement is a business in and of itself, with even local PDs sitting on the sides of interstates in rural counties here.

Some cities do use traffic tickets to make money. Check out Lindale Ohio. They were well known for it in the Cleveland area. I guess some state lawmakers actually tried to pass legislation to stop them. Right around 2013 their ticket income went from $866,000 a year to $10,000 due to the changes. Then in 2015 they added traffic cameras and brought in over $1 million. Then the state made a law where an officer had to be present so they built a road side shelter for their officer. So now the state is trying to come up with new rule so cities can't raise money that way. That town may be in the minority, but places like them do exist so you have to know the area you are driving in.

Two cops coming down the road saw me and turned their lights on, and I pulled over before they even got to me. Was shitting bricks a little bit as ive heard rumors of american cops being hardasses, but they commented on how they thought the car was cool, and If i hadn't have stopped they couldn't have caught me! Years ago i got caught on radar at 100 in a 45 and ended up with a $20 ticket for "waste of a finite resource" (basically getting bad gas mileage) I had just got my S13 set up with good tires, opened up intake and exhaust and some fuel tuning. On an empty road through a tunnel i dropped a gear and did a pull to redline to hear it, cop was on the other side as i exited and started braking. I saw him, he saw me, and i just got on the brakes as hard as i could, flipped an e-brake 180 and was next to him before he could pull away saying "Sorry, ya got me". By this time the cop was actually sort of amused by my antics and cool with the fact that he didn't have to chase me, so he gave me the minimum ticket possible with no points.

Very good observations about the police needing to do their civic job to keep people safe and for the driver be aware of the need to maintain a respectful attitude when interacting with them. There are, however, some situations in which revenue for local municipalities is a high priority. I have been stopped and told by the officer to contest the ticket he was writing. The reason is that is if the ticket is just sent in, the state gets the revenue, while a plea to a lesser charge in the local court, like Parking on Pavement, or a seat belt violation results in all the money staying local. Always contest a ticket by going to court.

I heard of a lead foot driver once who was driving the Ohio Turnpike back before EZ-Pass was adopted in OH. When exiting the Turnpike the tollbooth attendant waved his finger after looking at the timestamp on toll ticket calculating that point A to B took him less than 2/3 of the travel time!

Never understood those people who give cops a hard time, by refusing to roll down the window, or show their ID, being belligerent, questioning a cop in an aggressive way, etc. You turn a traffic stop that may be ten, fifteen minutes of your life into hours by being arrested and taken down to the police station. As Casey says be chill, don’t make a bad situation worse.

Thanks for the dose of common sense. You're exactly right on all points covered. My parents and friends growing up would always talk about how cops look for that red sports car etc. LOL. Owned and enjoyed 4 different Porsche's since 2011. Only one I have been pulled over in, (knock on wood) was my Cayenne Turbo S. It was late and I shot across a rural intersection onto the road I live on and hit the speed limit so quickly that from a distance, I guess it looked suspicious. I got chased down and pulled, even though he didn't get a read on me. I went to high school with him and our grandfathers were best friends. All good!

In quebec it's generally understood that there is a very low chance of a cop actually stopping you for doing 20 over the speed limit on the highway and 10 over in 50 zones (km/h) and at night you'il catch a bunch of people cruising at 130-140 depending on the region (km/h)

I got a ticket a few months ago here in NYC. I turned left from a left turning lane and got immediately pulled over and was given a ticket. There was a small no turn left sign on the traffic light which i did not see and i was not having a good day which probably added to me missing it. The GPS telling me to turn left with the left only turning lane did not make me think twice. I was upset after i was given which would be my very first ticket, and I was nice to the officer. The officer said they recently put the signs there. I personally think all the NO TURNS signs should be big with RED letters to make them stand out more cause some of them are very small and could go unnoticed.

The fact that speed limits are as low as they are still is ridiculous. Here in Texas we have the fastest speed limit on a toll road at 85MPH and people go 100MPH safely. So why aren't speed limits in places like the corn belt where there's literally nothing for a hundred miles still 65 or 70. I feel like with modern cars, tires, and safety, the highways should go up to 100MPH in desolate places. Cars are safe. Heck, speed limits were still 45MPH 50 years ago when 69 Camaros were a thing. Times have changed a lot. Why are they still 45MPH?

The perfect and most boring way is to stay in the right lane going the equal to or under the speed limit while behind and 18 wheeler. Or you can just learn where cops usually sit on the parts of the interstate or highway you travel the most on.
@RAY30050
@RAY30050 4 жыл бұрын
Issue with sitting behind a 18 wheeler is that it will kick up dirt and debris, and some states have lower limits for them the for car. IE Cali. One stretch of I5 is 70 for cars yet for rigs or anything with a trailer statewide is 55.

In The People's Republic of Kalifornia, any moving violation ticket by a law enforcement officer is a HUGE revenue generator for the state! The fine for speeding 10 over may "only" cost you $240 ($370 in a construction zone), but the state then tacks on a dozen or more "fees" and penalties that will cost you EASILY double that, likely much more so. You'll end up paying very close to $600 or more.

Got stopped once doing over 30 over the limit. It was 3am and even had a pistol sitting on the passenger seat. Notified the cop of the weapon, kept my hands where he could see them. Was polite and respectful AND acknowledged that I had screwed up. I was late for work and my job was pretty strict about that. I did not get a ticket that day. He was a state patrol cop, and was very cool....one of the few that are. Needless to say I never sped that much on that stretch of highway again.

At about 8:30 I disagree that speeding tickets/traps are not used to make revenue/money. Such tends to be very specific,I don't think most communities and PDs do that but some do and certain areas can be quite notorious about doing it. Also out of state/area drivers might be targeted because they are much less likely to come to court. The PD here where I live however does not seem to do this but there is a parking enforcement division that is quite busy raising revenue. One lady who did that after having started out as a custodian did become a Police Officer. Right now police work including dealing with major crime is not well appreciated and the tv media are very much antipolice in my opinion and it is getting harder to hire good applicants to the Police Dept. or to keep good people there.

Great video Casey. I also listen to the advise of the VinWiki channel, I forget who was talking about it, I think it was Rob Spaghetti, but just treat the officers with respect, and even roll your windows down and turn the engine off to show the cop you're not trying to run and have nothing to hide. A couple of weeks after watching that video I got pulled over in Jersey (For going around the left lane hogs, so I did deserve to get pulled over) and I did that trick, and lo and behold the stop was 10 minutes and I didn't even get a ticket. Did the same thing when I got caught speeding (Jersey is not a good state for me) a couple of months after that, the stop was 5 minutes, and even though I got a ticket, it really could have been much worse as I was doing 95 in a 65 and in Jersey that is a reckless driving charge, but I only got charged for speeding. So the bottom line is always treat the officer with respect and they typically will treat you the same way.

I've had both sides of this happen. Once in Toledo I passed an officer at 45 in a 45, he pulled me over because he was going 35, it was raining and "unsafe" he was pissed. I responded by saying "I'm sorry it is unsafe for you to drive in this but I am perfectly comfortable driving the speed limit." He handed my info back and said "stay safe, have a good night". In Illinois I completely ran a stop sign I didn't see(hidden by a tree), I broke hard when I saw it as I was passing it. The officer instantly asked "do you know why I pulled you over?" my response was "yes, I am sorry I ran the stop sign if I would've tried to stop by the time I got stopped I would've been mid intersection and a hazard." We had a short conversation of why we were in the area and on our way, he gave us directions to the park we were trying to find. Be nice and cordial with LEO and they'll generally be the same with you. Yes, I have dealt with shitty high on power LEO too, but the majority are good people.

Where I live the fines are so high that when the police set up a speed trap it is definitely a money generator. We also have photo radar and it is set as low as 4 mph over. That generates a $100 ticket and a red light camera is over $300. If the police stop you here it is to give you a ticket, there are no warnings, a warning is that you didn’t get stopped. There aren’t many speed traps where an officer writes you a ticket since they rely heavily on photo radar so if you know where the photo radar likes to hangout and keep an eye out for the cops you can speed as much as you want and not get bothered.

I was driving on a road that I didn’t know what was the speed limit and just drove what I felt would be reasonable and a officer pulled me over and just asked for my insurance and drivers license and then came back with my ticket and told me how to pay it. I didn’t even know I was even speeding. I’m curious what kind of day they were having where they didn’t even ask me if I knew why they pulled me over or anything. I was in a completely stock Volvo S80 that looked super basic so it’s not like I looked like a hot boy. It’s not too big of a deal because I haven’t had a ticket since and I pretty much keep things to private roads or the track anyway. Just was weird that the only ticket I have gotten was when I couldn’t find a speed limit sign. I definitely know the speed limit now.

Got pulled over by a state trooper for doing 18 over on the highway outside my apartment (speed limit is 45 but people regularly wiz through at 60, a mile down the speed changes to 55). Trooper had ticket in hand and I asked him if I could say something. "Sure", he said. "Well, my transmission had been slipping (which was true) and I wasn't really paying attention to my speedometer. I even saw you from half a mile and didn't bother slowing down bc I didn't think I was speeding... (At this point I felt guilty, first time getting pulled over for speeding) ...but I know that doesn't excuse me from the law, so I'll happily accept whatever you give me." He said that it was fine and let me off with a warning. I think he could tell that I was a good driver (I try not to speed, stay out the left lane, I signal before I breathe, etc.). Could've gone either way, but your best bet is to be as polite as you can and hope for the best.

It's the small hick towns that'll get you too. Since I live in VA, that is my focus.. Emporia VA is one of the well known speed trap towns... However, Eastville, VA, a 200-person town on the Eastern Shore, (a popular north/south route on the coast) has a $349,232 town budget that comes mostly (72%) from fines and forfeitures, according to an analysis by Governing magazine. Generally go no more than 5 mph over... I watch the speed limit signs carefully, because they go up and down WILDLY! LaCrosse VA(fines make up 20.8% of the town’s total revenues) Waverly VA (fines are 34.8% of the town’s revenue, though Governing based that amount on a 2014 financial statement) Many of the localities are in Louisiana, where some towns use fines to fund 80-92 percent of their local budgets.

I collected many tickets and have a bunch of funny stories getting pulled over in my high-school and college years. but now, in my late 20's, i still speed sometimes but i do it super respectfully. I try to have fun but as courteous as possible. Whenever a police officer catches me having too much fun i slow down, wave, smile, and just stare at my speedometer. They generally want to keep the flow of traffic moving. you just gotta show respect.

Unfortunately in Australia things aren't like this. I'm not sure if you guys in America have stationary speed cameras? but we have them all over and the ticketing system is Automated. It doesn't require police presence or any additional costs from the state. Because of this the Australian government has used it as a massive revenue raising operation. The australian govt also has a zero-tolerance policy on speeding, and I have received several fines in the mail and points off my licence for doing 1 km over the limit, even in a 50kmph zone.

A portion of what you are saying was in an article, Road & Track I believe, 35 to 45 years ago and I have used it religiously ever since -- don't stay in the left lane, run with the pack, don't lead the pack, anticipate where a cop may be (hilltops quite often), in other words, don't stand out. I've had a few tickets, avoided many and almost all the tickets I've received were when I was violating those basic rules. A Way To Get Out Of A Ticket About 1% Of The Time -- Have A Smarter Mouth Than The Cop: Deputy Sheriff: "Sir, do you know why I stopped you?" Me: "I suppose you're going to give me an invitation to the Deputy Sheriff's Ball." Deputy: "Deputy sheriffs don't have balls." Me: "That's what I thought (then laugh uncontrollably)." One percent of the time the officer will be so embarrassed at himself he'll stomp back to his car and drive off. Twenty percent of the time the officer will drag you out through the window -- cracked, partially or completely down. For the remaining percentage, you will be detained indefinitely while the officer searches your car, looks for every mechanical violation, possibly a cavity search and does a full search through NCIC looking for as much as a jaywalking violation not settled.
