As a mother of three I get asked this question a lot, but you don't have to be a parent to master balance in your life.
In this video, I share how I balance family and work-and two key approaches that I use every single day to bring my best self to both my work and my family.
To learn more about the Progress Principle, check out this article: hbr.org/2011/0...

You know it's funny, you hear all these life coaches talk about how important balance is and staying organized and all that crap. And then you try to apply these principles to your life and realize that having a full-time career, two kids at very different stages in their lives, a spouse and at the same time trying to find and fulfill your purpose makes it very difficult and maybe even impossible to achieve this mysterious "balance" everyone's talking about. I wrote about how to develop an effective morning routine that actually works for you on my blog and one of the points I stress most of all is that there is no one-size-fits-all. The other most important thing - and I think this is what Mel means - is that you have to be flexible and realize that life changes and you will also have to change a lot too. Stop trying to be perfect and just try to be your best.

I love this - focus on the Progress Principle: Happiness and fulfillment come from making progress on something that matters. That is so doable and not overwhelming. If we can commit to that, every day adds up to a better day. Amazing moms, be kind to yourself because your children know when you aren't. When you self care - you also caring from your family :)

I dont have kids but I have a hectic life style: work, studies side projects and still making time for family.... This might have been the best advice I have ever heard about juggling everything. Straight, no nonsense to the point things that do matters. Like your way of handling this thing called life M!

I like the progress principle. I heard something similar a while ago, and it's the reason I try to start my day with my most important project (to me!) first before all the other things hijack my time.

Thank you! I needed this! Having a 14 year old and an 11 year old...things are now different than even 1 year or 2 ago. You are SO right that their new stages in life require a different me as a parent, as we move through these new seasons of their lives and our lives! A lot of mental energy required to be a parent, run a business and have a beautiful relationship with your spouse ! Sense of humor and grace and patience are definitely a must! Thank you! Thank you!

from the moment my parent divorced, my mom become a single parent. she left me and my bro at the care of my grandma while she take on job at another town so she can cover our family financial needs. i always hold my mom with highest respect. it just, after growing up i remembering just how i and my bro have been at my grandma care since we were babies. how polarizing my mum behavior with us her children and how she behave to the rest of family (she very close and have strong bond with her family member execpt us her kids), my viewpoint of my mom changed. especially with how averse she is about possibilities of raising her own child, i just conclude that if anything, my mum choose to take on job to get more freedom in her life while avoiding us her kids. my love and respect for her just crumble from that point

The first thing as far as children is put down the damn tablet the damn phone and engage with your children. Because you're teaching them that that device is more important than they are. Can you tell I feel passionate about that I don't just walk around saying damn all the time unless I'm passionate about it. Kids are a gift and they grow up so fast. Facebook will be there for a long time and you can go back later in the evening after the kids are in bed.

Refreshing to have a first hand account of having a career and motherhood. For some reason this topic has become polarizing online with tons of junk and rhetoric (vs first hand accounts) when I look to try to learn how other women have balanced the two.

Hello my queen. I want you to know that you can change your life at any moment. It just depends on you: decide to do it and go for it. In the beginning, let's be honest, it will be difficult and overwhelming. But remember to do 1 thing at the time. You can move or progress slowly. But you have to move. And remember you are special, you are loved, you are gifted and you can do this.

So I have 2 offer .. 1 job with less responsibility , higher patriarchal culture but great work life balance i get more than 16 hrs a day for my self and my only daughter upbringing. Second offer of higher responsibility ..hardly i will be home for sleep . No time for child . But great career potential better salary I just put my child as priority and took the first offer. .but i keep fantasizing of did I made a mistake . Or did I did a right thing for my child .

This sounds like BS. For a family to run properly, someone has to be there to take care of the children. For a husband to feel complete, there needs to be someone helping. That is a wife's job.
