> No CS Degree, No Bootcamp Yet you still had very strong mathematics and statistics background at a university level. Good luck to the people seeing this that don't have that background. Their best option is to go do an undergraduate and pick up those skills, otherwise no chance. Don't underestimate the strong problem solving skills you develop in undergraduate and graduate level STEM program.
@egorhowell Жыл бұрын
Hi James. Yes this is a fair point, I do say in the video that I had an advantage and everyone's background is different, so you shouldn't compare directly yourself. I don't believe my physics degree was the sole reason behind me landing my first role. :)

Hi . If i get into Oxford BA Mathematics and did really well on the course, can I top data Science jobs in the UK? And studying Physics vs Maths at Oxford for a data science career? Thanks .
@jamestucker480011 ай бұрын
@natural-926 you'd realistically need some statistics and programming along with that Math foundation. Pair it with a major or minor in CS
@egorhowell11 ай бұрын
@@natural-926 If you study maths at Oxford then yes defo you can get a data science job! Just make sure to learn some python and maybe try a data science internship somewhere. The maths degree will give you great fundamentals. But, when applying to jobs you have to demonstrate an interest in the field. Hope this helps? And for physics vs maths, tbh it doesn't make much difference for a data science career. In maths you can tailor your modules to be more stats focussed, which is probably better. However, overall its miniscule.

Hi, I am also a physicist (finished my Ph.D. recently in theoretical physics) and will start a DS job soon. I resonate with you on physics not being like what I imagined during my school time. During my school days, I used to solve hard physics problems based on Newtonian mechanics but research is quite different from school or even college physics. Now I realize that what I liked was the problem-solving part of physics and not necessarily the physics itself. The problem solving part in college/real world is done within CS domain and not physics. I don't regret my PhD but i should have explored more during my UG. Nice video !

My journey into data science has been an incredible mix of self-learning, online courses, and hands-on projects. I’m 30 years old and currently a teacher, but I’ve recently developed a strong passion for data science. To build my skills, I completed the IBM Data Science Professional Certificate, which has been a fantastic experience. While I feel I’ve gained a solid foundation in programming, statistics, and machine learning, I’m curious about the next steps. Do I need a formal degree in data science to transition into the field and land a job, or would my experience, certifications, and a strong portfolio be enough? I’d love to hear from others who’ve navigated this path-especially if you’ve made a career switch into data science. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I think A level maths is sufficient to get an entry level role and understand most things in machines leaning, particularly if you studied statistics modules. Tbh, I dont think you necessarily need a masters in data science, but if you are keen there is no harm. A degree in my opinion is slightly better than a boot camp, given your degree is non STEM.

I came here after seeing one of your blog post.... Ummm hey I'm from India basically and this year I'm going to college... After watching your video... It seems being a Data scientist can be quite interesting!! Even though I have literally no knowledge in computer science... I want to learn this. I have like 4-5 months left in my hand... Do you think I should pursue a career in data science if I start to learn computer and all other stuffs you mentioned??
@egorhowell Жыл бұрын
If you want to be a data scientist then yeah go for it. Depending on your background, you could land a job in 4-5 months. Data science is not solely computer science based. If you know maths and stats well, then I would say thats better than theoretical computer science concepts. Most computer science you need to go is basically how to code, at least for an entry level job. I would say go for it, but don't go into thinking you will definitely land a job within 5 months. Like I say in the video, every journey is different and it's best not to compare to others!
@pallavraj9722 Жыл бұрын
@@egorhowell yeah agree. Basically I am not hoping for quick job. I want to learn data science in college. It's gonna take like 4 years course... I am good in maths and physics but I have no experience regarding computer and stuffs. And I have 4-5 months in hand to learn at least basics... Do you think I can learn those basics in 4-5 months? And what should I start learning first?
@egorhowell Жыл бұрын
@@pallavraj9722 oh 100% you can learned the basics of computer science in that time. Honestly the best way to learn is start coding and then you will learn quite a few CS topics along the way. Just take any course, ideally Python if its data science that you want to get into. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJfWlImJZdunmNk www.tutorialspoint.com/python/index.htm These are good resources.

If data science is really what you want to do, then go for it! Sure, it's possible to do it in 6 months but like I say in the video, don't base your journey off mine. Everyone is different, with different backgrounds. :)

Hii, first of all, amazing video, i just wanted to know if you finished your degree before pivoting to DS, im 23 and started studying my degree (CS degree) and coding on september 2023 and also working, my goal is to get a Job as a data scientist as soon as i can, but as i just said i just started the degree, im worried to not be able to find a Job until i finish it, do you think its posible to land a DS job in my situation in the next year? Regards, thanks in advance❤
@egorhowell Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the feedback! I finished my degree in June 2021, but was studying from around December 2020. As you are a CS student, I think it's more than possible that you can get a DS role. Applying for grad schemes would your best bet as they don't necessarily expect much experience. I think you are more likely to land a DS role after your degree, as they often specify you need some degree. Hope this helps!

Hey Egor, is 6 months realistic for someone who’s just pivoting to a new career in Data science?
@egorhowell Жыл бұрын
I would say yes but really depends on your background. If you come from STEM (science, tech, engineering, maths) then it's an easier transition. It's also how much time you have to dedicate to learning. If you are learning full time then 6 months should be enough! Hope this helps :)
@chikeziechukwuazi816 Жыл бұрын
@@egorhowell alright. I come from a financial background though. I’ve been dedicating at least 2 hours per day to learning Python since the year began. What would you recommend?
@egorhowell Жыл бұрын
@@chikeziechukwuazi816 I would say its do-able! Try and lean into your financial background when applying for jobs. If you apply as a Data Scientist to financial firms you will have an advantage as you already know the domain very well. However, it's important to not go into it thinking it will take 6 months. A year is very realistic as well. But like I say, every journey is different, so think and do what's is right for you!

The thing you guys need to understand, when you see these videos. You have to understand certain people have a certain level of intelligence when going into this field. You dont have that intelligence. You are better off going the college route.
@egorhowell8 ай бұрын
Hey, yes this is somewhat true. But hard work is always needed to get anywhere.
@widxchange8 ай бұрын
I strongly disagree with that view. You don't have to have a "certain level" of intelligence to understand and work in the field. Anyone with common sense can learn it and do well. It's the same for coding. It all comes down to affinity and interest. Is it something you really like doing? That's the question.

@@widxchange what I wrote was based off that click bait title . Not a matter if you can achieve it. 6 months ?!?!? No degree ? You seriously undermine what data science is. And to just say it’s common sense is just plain ignorant to the masses. @@Desiparth I can agree with that. The clickbait thumbnail is obviously misleading. You need time and dedication. And by common sense I mean it is not as out of the average joe's reach as people would like to think. It is not rocket science
