How I Became a High School Librarian - The Short and Long Versions

Several people have asked how to become a school librarian - here's my story! The first little bit is the short version, and then I tell the full story in case you're interested.

Thank you for this video! Being a school librarian is my dream job but in the state where i live it’s super confusing on what degrees and/or certification I need! (Currently only have my bachelors degree in film/media studies)

This was so, so helpful .What a relief that you didn't have you get a second master's degree! I'm in the last semester of mine (not library sciences), and have heard of those library certificates in my state. I was also relieved that I didn't have to get another master's! Only 24 hours seemed way more doable! I'm thinking of making more "day in the life" videos... I'm working on figuring how to make my channel both a BookTube channel and a librarian insight channel.

thank you💞 my friend said i looked like a librarian and it actually sparked the memory of me having wanted to be a librarian when i was younger. ever since then, ive been trying to learn about the field and how i could possibly fit into it. your video was very informative. ^__^ i think it would be wonderful to work in a highschool library

Would you recommed getting a teaching masters in english also and does it make the pay better as a school librarian and should i just get a certificate like you after and how could i get that rank 1 but i live in south carolina because i want the better pay too but i actually am thinking about going to berea college for my bachelor's degree and possibly my masters if you recommed a english masters degree so i could decide just to stay and live in Kentucky do you recommend living in Kentucky or a certain state to be a high school librarian like you?

How about if you're from another country and you were able to migrate and you have a Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science. Would that be possible for me to apply as a school librarian? I am also a licensed school librarian and currently I am working as a school librarian in a public high school.

I'm not sure about that. You would need to check the requirements in the specific state you would be teaching - each state has different requirements. For instance, in Kentucky, you have to have a teaching degree to be a school librarian as well as a library certificate or degree. Hope this helps!

I just graduated with bachelors in secondary English education. I am a full time high school English teacher. I immediately went from undergraduate to graduate school. I am currently getting my Masters of education in curriculum and instruction concentrated in reading specialties. I am also doing an add-on certificate to be a school librarian. I live in Louisiana.

In the country i live in students actually become the librarian and i was a librarian too but the students in my school are soooooo noisy and destroy stuff in the library but i love my job😀

Hi, Katty. It depends on your situation. I received a scholarship that paid for my bachelor's degree. Then I paid for the rest of my degrees/certificates while I was working so that I didn't have to take out any loans.

Hello! I did. I was an English teacher for years before I was a librarian and started taking graduate level library classes during my 4th year of teaching. I think it only took me about a year and half to finish my library certificate. The classes were so difficult that I couldn't do the homework while also grading tons of papers. Hope this helps!
