I got my first web development job last week at a very small start up. I finished my first project according to the design I was given and I ended up being let go due to a lack of experience. What bothers me most is that I did what I was told and they didn't even give me feedback. They could have at least told me it looked bad (I honestly thought the designs given looked bad), but I made their designs happen. Oh well though, I gained some experience and now I'm off to look for my next gig.

Chris, I'll be 50 this year but I have almost 30 years of experience in I.T. I started off as one of the first female computer techs in the U.S. Air Force. I have an A+ Cert and MOS certs and I just graduated with a Bachelor's in Web Design. I've created a couple sites for people using WP and FrontPage (back in 2000) and always had an interest in Web Design which is why I dabbled here and there. I'm doing a web development track on Udemy right now, just to keep updated. Do you think it's too late for me to move into Web Development and get a job?

old question, but still. with your experience, it would be almost easy, I suspect :) web development is probably the easiest route compared to any other programming. I'm just a student, but dabbed in many different things. Considering you have degree in web design, it will be a lot easier for you, than for others, because you already know one side of it. I suspect you could become full stack developer or make apps or be a html5 game maker etc. wish you luck!

Hey, I checked out your website, and I would like to offer you some constructive feedback. It took me 5 seconds to load that profile picture on the home page. You can fix this by reducing the dimensions since you are only displaying a 175px-wide image. Instead of reducing the image's natural dimensions of 770x760, why don't you just use a 175px-wide image instead of setting the max-width to 175px? The file size would be much smaller than what it is now (1 mb). Also, as soon as I went you your site, I immediately recognized that typical Twitter Bootstrap look. If I were you, I would customize the design of your site more, and perhaps you could even refrain from using Bootstrap all together (maybe keep the grid, or other components, though). In my opinion, frameworks such as Bootstrap and Foundation are overkill. Instead of using everything, just use a few components that you absolutely need. When I hover over your Instagram photos in the navy blue section, they spontaneously jitter. I would work on that, for that jittery side-effect takes away from the transition. Also, the glyphicons are not loading for me. In my opinion, that Indie Flower font does not go well with your site. I would choose a more legible font such as Open Sans or Source Sans Pro. Additionally, increasing the line-height and font-size in some areas would help alleviate the discomfort I experience reading the bits of text on your website; in some areas, the "y" on one line interferes with other text on the lines below. Moreover, I would work on the Vertical Rhythm of your site. Vertical Rhythm keeps vertical spaces between elements on a page consistent with each other. Essentially, you take a line-height, such as 24px, or a unit-less value (recommended) such as 1.5 (24/16 = 1.5), and set that as the line-height of your body text. Then, you set the line-height of all text elements and the white space between elements to a multiple of 24px. You can read more about Vertical Rhythm here. zellwk.com/blog/why-vertical-rhythms/ Lastly, I don't know if this is because you are using a CMS, but some elements on your site are styled via the style="" html attribute. This is a bad practice and should be avoided, unless it is dynamically included by way of JavaScript or server-side rendering. The reason why this is a "bad practice" is that it doesn't adopt the practice of separation of concerns. I hope you consider my feedback, and if you have any questions, let me know!

How is bootstrap overkill, like what else are going to use Flexbox? lol. I also dont get your point about adjusting the image width, you can just use plugins on Gulp or Grunt to compress images which would work much better.
@MattKnowsTech7 жыл бұрын
generalqwer You don't need to use Bootstrap for Flexbox. Also, you can compress the images, but why would you need such a large dimension image for a small profile picture? Optimizing images for the web _also_ includes using images with practical dimensions. In my opinion, Bootstrap is overkill because I don't end up using the majority of the code and I spend more time overriding the default styles than anything else. Instead of using the framework in its entirety, in the past, I just used a few components such as the modal window or CSS grid. Many developers just use Bootstrap and Foundation for rapid prototyping, which they are extremely good for.

Didn't realize bootstrap was something related to web development, thought it was something else. Noticed it a lot on a lot of listed positions i've found in my quest for an IT related career and not many if at all had a title that implied it was a web dev position lol. Need to research bootstrap now to understand how it work. The main reason I'm leaving this comment though is to ask you to elaborate on styling a webpage using the style="" html attribute. You claim it's bad practice but also about the practice of separation concerns. Could you elaborate on what you mean by the practice of separation concerns and also give feed back of alternate methods of styling a webpage? I would think an alternate method would be using style sheets, but that's something i only recently just learned.

How long did you take learning PHP?, and what about CSS? Not saying JavaScript. In 3 months you know nothing, the time is a lie, I sae the comments very positive for this video, it seems to me that they are beginners, learning to be a web developer takes time. My advice for people who want to become web developer is this: Do not care about the time you would take to learn to be web developer, but be determined to become a web developer, you will face many things in the learning process. Be organized, practice every day, persevere, never give up, and love what you are doing, forget about the time, and then you will find out yourself a real professional as web developer.

Not trying to be negative at all but let’s be realistic for a min... if you think you’re going to be a web developer in 3 months or even 9 months? You are wrong my friends because: I assume you have basic knowledge of web development right? So you know the front end and back end and all other frameworks that you have to learn in order to do the assigned tasks by your employer, example: To be front end developer you must be proficient in (HTML - CSS - JavaScript-jquery) and more depends on what are you specifically developing. So with that being said, do you think you can become proficient in the above languages in 3 months? Let’s say by some miracle you made it within (9 months instead of 3) chances to be employed are very weak now day with no degree and no experience. I’d highly recommend to go to college and get your BS it’s not hard trust me but you gotta be patient and willing to learn. Then it’ll pay off massively, especially in tech cities such as Seattle which where I’m located at. At the end I wish everyone the best of luck. And I apologize if you think I was being negative.

You cant call yourself web developer after 3 months. Not even close. Without strong background in IT or some experience in coding before that, you are barely intern material in some really small company. Barely. And only if you worked your ass off those few months. After 5-6 months of a lot of sleepless nights, then you can maybe be some degree of junior web dev, but still a lot to learn before you dont have that big "junior" in front of your name anymore. Hate to break it to you, but i met a a lot of smart and talented people that needed at least a year of hard work before they became actually good. You maybe think that you know a lot after few months, believe thats just a fragment of what you'll learn. You just give false hope to these people, because they will believe that its that easy. Its not. But keep the grind, and it will pay off. After a year or so of studying i managed to get a job at one of the biggest IT companies in my country. If you dont give up, you will succeed, its 20 percent brain, and 80 percent will and discipline.
@vdj2557 жыл бұрын
I believe you, motivation is always good and im glad that more people are getting into this field. Its just that for some reason people have an impression its a walk in the park to do it, start doing it and just give up when they realize its not that easy. More people should get in with a mindset of "its hard but with hard work ill do it", instead of "gonna get that easy money, everyone is doing it". Last time senior developer from my department tried to get us another developer, from 100 people, half of them couldnt write basic javascript, other half could, but that was about it. And the job wasnt even for entry level junior, it was for 1+ year exp. You seem like cheerful guy, people need that, i know that it would help me! Keep it up.

Web developer yes... video editor no. Intro super loud so you have to turn volume down. Dude starts speaking and you can hardly hear him forcing you to turn volume up. Entire video I'm waiting for the volume to blast me again.

I have played with web design and went the route of hardware infrastructure technician. I am getting old "I am 50 now" and want to do more work from home type of work. I am working on my CSS and html right now.

What would be a good place to go and learn coding for software dev today? I am stuck at a full time job that requires me to be on call, and I want to still make decent money, but learn coding.

Hello Chris! Thanks for sharing ! I`d like to have a word from you about something: I started college (webdesign) 6 months ago, and now I feel quite confident in photoshop/Illustrator/html and css, but not started yet studying things like javascript and php. Is it normal to not feel enough self-confident to try a internship or even a part-time job at this level? College will finish april 2018 but I REALLY wanna try to get some job before it finishes. Im living in Canada and studying as international student here. Thank u!

Plant based Jenn you are an inspiration as well. If you really want a job, try pushing all of your work to github and if you have free time try to contribute to open source projects. It will show employers you're dedicated and hungry to learn. Since you are just starting out try to emphasize the fact that you are looking for a company that would give you mentorship and help you grow. Companies want to hear this too and they will not hesitate to bring you up to speed. Congrats on your degree.

Chris, thanks. I'm a Web Developer too and I had been feeling kinda discouraged lately. I've been coding for around a year now, and. I got to the point where I felt somehow stuck in my progress and I just didn't feel like coding, but your enthusiasm really made me remember how amazing it is to create, to be able to make a "Hello World", and to turn awkward lines of characters into a functioning website. thanks Chris.

Chris Sean Thanks. I am 16 years old, so for me to get a front-end job at a design agency after just 8 months of learning was a cool thing, still sometimes it feels discouraging for me to sit all those hours to code while everyone around me is pretty much partying. thanks for your enthusiastic video on this

its not hard but in time the salarys will be going down to 30k to twenty thousand so nows the time to get in before everyone learns how to do it its only a matter of time with countys like india, china, mexico and russia i give it another ten years of living the good life before it gets bloaded with everyone learing to code

I have similar story to yours, I always skipped classes at high school and always got bored at classes, I always stayed at home to play video games and sleep, but i always loved computers and than i started to learn to code, and today i work as web dev, good luck to you chris! and to all other watcher and reader, dont give up! anybody can code and it doesn't matter if you went to college or if you were a good student or not! the beauty of code that nobody look at your past, its only about your skills

I wanna be a digital nomad and don't know what area to choose to freelance in. Digital marketing, copywriting, video editing or coding??? I'm interested in coding cos it's about problem solving and finding solutions but people say that it's not something I can learn casually or half heartedly since the technology scene is constantly changing. My main focus is being a travel KZbinr so freelancing in coding would be a side project, just to fund my travels. Do you think a side career in coding is feasible? Or do you think it's something you either dedicate 100% and succeed or fail due to the amount of knowledge required to keep up with the coding industry?

I have been programming for about 3 years. I have been learning the MERN Stack now. I actually learned HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap 3 years ago. I know a lot of JavaScript but not a ton. I am still learning, however, I am only a teenager and not even out of high school. I don't know how you got the job considering how difficult it is in this age to actually get a web development job. Thank you for sharing. I thought that I didn't know that much code although I know HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, JavaScript, JQuery and I am learning NodeJS and React. I still feel like I don't know much code but obviously, I have done a lot more than I thought. I can't believe that you got a job after three months of coding. You technically didn't know any programming languages considering HTML isn't technically a programming language.
