When I was in SOS, there was a guy who was in a similar job. Being a Millie Launch Officer, most of my work was TS or S. Yet, we still had to build an OER (or OPR now?). You all may have to get creative with words without betraying any classified. He also told me that their head of their DOV was just passed over for the second time but he was retained because of his job skills. The AF does not always pay attention so you have to do it for them. Put the front and back of an OER under the plexi-glass of your desk. Satisfy a requirement each if you can. Join the Jr. Officer's Council and take a leadership role. Make sure you Wing Commander knows who you are (good way only). On inspection, volunteer to perform. Score well though. Good luck.

I went ROTC Air Force back in 1994. I was in the same career field, but it was called something different back then. I spent 4 years learning and got out of the service and went on to become a CCIE in routing and switching and CCIE in Security. I made good money that I retired at the age of 38. Today I am 51 years old and still living a good life. This career field pays very well if you become an expert.

I was thinking about once I got my degree that I would commission, then I realized that Officers in cyber never do cyber, or know very little of the fun technical stuff. Which is why I went down the road for contracting. Less of the politics, but more impactful operational work. Enlisting was pointless because all the cyber positions slowly got contracted away anyway.

Hi! I'm currently in AFROTC and was interested in the 17S side of cyber. So from I understand, 17S is harder to get than 17D and it is only given to the top performers at UCT. Would it possible for someone to transition to 17S if they weren't originally assigned 17S? Thanks!
@kimchiwarriorprincess
@kimchiwarriorprincess 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jalen, from what I’ve been told recently approximately 1/3 of UCT grads will go the 17S route, so it is harder, but if you’re focused on it you should be able to snag a spot. Also, this career field has changed nonstop-I’d say there’s nothing permanent with one’s shred-designation, it’s constantly changing, just do your best in whatever you’re selected for 😉

If you have specific certifications and expertise, you could make more in civilian sector. If you’re just beginning, likely being an officer will set you up better financially. Enlisted generally have a low pay scale and it takes a long time to get paid in the high 5 figures unfortunately.

Since you have some awesome experience I’d check out the 1B4 Reddit Forum which is managed by the cyber enlisted career field managers who identify high performing airmen to recommend for 17X direct commission. I’d read through everything there and contact them and ask questions. They are typically good about giving information and even hold live webinars too. Good luck! I understand its not exactly a computer science field but Im currently working in IT and have Sec+ already. Do you think I would be considered for a cyber officer job if I started the process? I have about a 3.7gpa and graduate in October. I was also curious how technical the job is as the Marine Corps officers typically were more hands off and were in management. Do offensive cyber officers just manage offensive enlisted or are they technical as well? Thanks in advance.

Hi there, thanks for asking-short answer is yes. I’ve met and worked with reserve cyber officers. But NONE of the ones I’ve met started off reserve. All of them were active for at least about 4 years then went reserves. Your best bet may be applying for officer training school, doing UCT, one assignment (3ish years) then switching to Reserve or Guard.

I have my degree in cybersecurity. I have my A+, Net+, Sec+, CySA+, Pentest+, CASP+, SSCP, LPI Linux Essentials, and ITILv4 Foundation certifications now; and will also have my CISSP within a month. I also start my Masters in cybersecurity in August. But I am not able to join due to health issues.

@CyberSolutionsWithJared With a masters and all those certs, why join the military? Seems like you should be in high demand in corporate America (i.e. Microsoft, Amazon, Costco...). And my son was told by an AF recruiter that a BS degree in CS will not qualify him for Direct Commission. He needs a master's degree to even be considered.

Undergrad: BA - Political Science/International Relations. MBA - Business. I would check with someone who is currently an Air Force recruiter about the color blindness, as far as I know it’s a disqualification for flying jobs.

Young people should know that the AF is now saying that a bachelor's degree in computer science with certifications and IT experience doesn't qualify you for direct commission into their cyber program. You now need a masters or PhD to even be considered. It all sounds ridiculous and nefarious. After high school, pursue anything medical or skill trades instead of the military.

I have heard that the USAFA looks very closely at class rank. I have a GPA of 3.89 but am only in the top 35% of my class. Will that hinder my chances of being accepted when I apply? I am hoping to go through USAFA to become a cyber officer
@kimchiwarriorprincess

Hi Bradley, all factors are taken into consideration. In short, yes-if over a third of your class is at such a high GPA, it’ll mean to admissions one of two things-either your school inflates grades or you are in a very smart group of students. Hard to differentiate on paper alone. The best way to make yourself stand out is to score high on the SAT/ACT and position yourself well with strong extracurriculars (Varsity sports) and leadership experience (President, VP, etc of prestigious clubs), do well on fitness test, nail your interview, and get your nomination. No pressure! 🤪 but seriously, it’s do-able, just take it one step at a time.. 🙌

@@kimchiwarriorprincess would 2500 community service hours make me stand out? I have other things in mind as well but that’s most likely the thing the Academy would care most about
@kimchiwarriorprincess

@@bradleywalton970 wow that’s an impressive amount of community service! While community service alone is notable and a good thing, what they want to see is leadership-what did you accomplish during those 2500 hours? Did you lead people to do a thing? What was the result of such thing? Who did you help and how did you improve their lives? If you word it that way you’re going to have a much higher shot than saying “I did community service”. That in addition to a 1300+ minimum math/verbal SAT/31 ACT score and physical fitness/varsity sports will help you. 🙌

How often did you travel or get reassigned to different base?
@kimchiwarriorprincess
@kimchiwarriorprincess 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Johari, thank you for watching! Most officer assignments are 2-3 years. Lately they’ve been making them 4 years, except for the first assignment, they are keeping that at 3 years max so someone will get to experience at least 2 assignments before their initial commitment time is finished. 🤗
@kimchiwarriorprincess
@kimchiwarriorprincess 3 жыл бұрын
Travel depends a lot on where you are working and the mission. Some people hardly travel, some do even up to 50% of the time. Regardless everyone ends up traveling from where they live to the next assignment and that usually includes driving through multiple states each time.

Hi this video really helped. I want to be a cyber officer and i have been trying to find videos and this really did help me with my decision. I do have a question for you. So I am going to graduate high school with my associates degree. I am wondering if it would be better to do ROTC or go in as an enlisted and get my bachelors and then go as an officer. I know this question is more opinion based, but I'm trying to find the best way for me to become an air force officer.
@kimchiwarriorprincess
@kimchiwarriorprincess 3 жыл бұрын
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I would always recommend going straight officer route; call your local university detachment, visit academyadmissions.com and research your options. I don’t recommend going enlisted when your end goal is to become officer (unless you have to due to $ or grades or other reasons)...why make a left turn in hopes your path will go right, when you can make a right turn to begin with? 😉

@@kimchiwarriorprincess lol i keep coming up with questions sorry. As a cyber officer are u able to be chosen for 17s? Another question is do u do any coding, hacking or anything like that as an officer. Or is it just over seeing other do it. My final question is does rotc teach you everything u will need to know to be a leader, or is most of it hands on experience?
@kimchiwarriorprincess
@kimchiwarriorprincess 3 жыл бұрын
These are all great questions! I’ll do my best to answer briefly: 1. Yes you can be chosen for 17S. (About 1/3 of all Cyber/Communications officers are 17S series, the other 2/3 are 17D like myself) 2. It depends where you are, and your rank. 17S is usually more hands on with the fun techy stuff. Also from Captain and higher is more leadership role, less hands on. Again, this is generalization, it depends where you are. 3. ROTC/USAFA/OTS only teaches you basic principles needed to commission. The rest comes from trial and error, professional development, self-sought education, relationship building, and for myself, prayer, lots of it! 😆

Also, by professional development, I mean a few things: -official schooling the Air Force will require of you as an officer -recommended books/reading -formal and informal mentorship from the leaders around you

I’m not completely sure what you mean here, but if you’re asking what are the requirements for commissioning as a cyber officer there are quite a few but one thing you do need is a bachelors degree. In order to enlist you’ll need your high school diploma. While certifications are highly sought after and amazing skills to have they are not required to enlist or commission as an officer. Some of the cyber tech schools will include certain certifications as a part of training after entering. 🤗

It takes a decent amount of preparation. Coming from zero knowledge of networks and IT management, it took 3 weeks of a network basics course plus 2 weeks of sec + class, plus my own preparation (practice tests) day and night during those 2 weeks. I ended up scoring well. If you already have certification then you have it, no one can force you to take a test you’ve already passed. You would just skip that portion of training. 🤓

Wow, it sounds like you’re doing very well! That’s great you’re looking at joining. I personally don’t know of any OTS grads that go straight to reserves for the 17X career field, I’d say it’s the vast majority who join active and do 4 years then switch to reserves. It would be best to check with an OTS recruiter. As far as experience goes, it depends where you end up and who you’re working with and for-every assignment I’ve had has taught me a ton.

Is age a factor? I have a Bachelors in Computer science. Currently in DEP and hoping to get Cyber Transport Systems as enlisted. I’ve tried inquiring about being an officer but they always tell me it’s either full or if you haven’t taken your AFQTC test you have to wait till the next round. In my area there were no physical locations to take it at the time. I’m still conflicted on whether I should try going for Officer, but I heard you learn more hard skill as enlisted in cyber related fields.
