I went ROTC Air Force back in 1994. I was in the same career field, but it was called something different back then. I spent 4 years learning and got out of the service and went on to become a CCIE in routing and switching and CCIE in Security. I made good money that I retired at the age of 38. Today I am 51 years old and still living a good life. This career field pays very well if you become an expert.

When I was in SOS, there was a guy who was in a similar job. Being a Millie Launch Officer, most of my work was TS or S. Yet, we still had to build an OER (or OPR now?). You all may have to get creative with words without betraying any classified. He also told me that their head of their DOV was just passed over for the second time but he was retained because of his job skills. The AF does not always pay attention so you have to do it for them. Put the front and back of an OER under the plexi-glass of your desk. Satisfy a requirement each if you can. Join the Jr. Officer's Council and take a leadership role. Make sure you Wing Commander knows who you are (good way only). On inspection, volunteer to perform. Score well though. Good luck.

I was thinking about once I got my degree that I would commission, then I realized that Officers in cyber never do cyber, or know very little of the fun technical stuff. Which is why I went down the road for contracting. Less of the politics, but more impactful operational work. Enlisting was pointless because all the cyber positions slowly got contracted away anyway.

Hi Jalen, from what I’ve been told recently approximately 1/3 of UCT grads will go the 17S route, so it is harder, but if you’re focused on it you should be able to snag a spot. I'm having trouble finding material for the 2 jobs that looked really interesting (Cyberspace Operations Officer & Cyberspace Effects Operations Officer) and can't identify if it's an Active-Duty-only role or if I'd be able go for it as a reservist? I'm a non-prior with a bachelors in Comp. Sci and a masters in Data Analytics -- dunno if qualifications change the answer. 😅

Hi there, thanks for asking-short answer is yes. I’ve met and worked with reserve cyber officers. But NONE of the ones I’ve met started off reserve. All of them were active for at least about 4 years then went reserves. @@kimchiwarriorprincess lol i keep coming up with questions sorry. As a cyber officer are u able to be chosen for 17s? Another question is do u do any coding, hacking or anything like that as an officer. Or is it just over seeing other do it. My final question is does rotc teach you everything u will need to know to be a leader, or is most of it hands on experience?
@kimchiwarriorprincess4 жыл бұрын
These are all great questions! I’ll do my best to answer briefly: 1. Yes you can be chosen for 17S. (About 1/3 of all Cyber/Communications officers are 17S series, the other 2/3 are 17D like myself) 2. It depends where you are, and your rank. 17S is usually more hands on with the fun techy stuff. Also from Captain and higher is more leadership role, less hands on. Again, this is generalization, it depends where you are. 3. ROTC/USAFA/OTS only teaches you basic principles needed to commission. The rest comes from trial and error, professional development, self-sought education, relationship building, and for myself, prayer, lots of it! 😆
@kimchiwarriorprincess4 жыл бұрын
Also, by professional development, I mean a few things: -official schooling the Air Force will require of you as an officer -recommended books/reading -formal and informal mentorship from the leaders around you

Hi Bradley, all factors are taken into consideration. In short, yes-if over a third of your class is at such a high GPA, it’ll mean to admissions one of two things-either your school inflates grades or you are in a very smart group of students. Hard to differentiate on paper alone. The best way to make yourself stand out is to score high on the SAT/ACT and position yourself well with strong extracurriculars (Varsity sports) and leadership experience (President, VP, etc of prestigious clubs), do well on fitness test, nail your interview, and get your nomination. No pressure! 🤪 but seriously, it’s do-able, just take it one step at a time.. 🙌

@@kimchiwarriorprincess would 2500 community service hours make me stand out? I have other things in mind as well but that’s most likely the thing the Academy would care most about
@kimchiwarriorprincess3 жыл бұрын
@@bradleywalton970 wow that’s an impressive amount of community service! While community service alone is notable and a good thing, what they want to see is leadership-what did you accomplish during those 2500 hours? Did you lead people to do a thing? What was the result of such thing? Who did you help and how did you improve their lives? If you word it that way you’re going to have a much higher shot than saying “I did community service”. That in addition to a 1300+ minimum math/verbal SAT/31 ACT score and physical fitness/varsity sports will help you. 🙌

That’s great! Yes they are very different, I go into detail about both at the 2:15 mark of this video. They’re both great programs and places to be, each with their own pros and cons, but ultimately with the same goal in mind. Good luck! 🇺🇸

It really depends on what’s needed at the time, I wish I had insight on all the numbers but I don’t right now. I would think they need someone like you.

Do you know anything about the current cyber direct commission program? I will have my Masters in around a year, and I have multiple industry certs. I am currently the spouse of an active duty enlisted Airman. I am considering trying to commission through the direct commission path. Do officers brought in through the direct commission program still go to keesler for tech school after OTS?
@AnnMitt6 ай бұрын
My son's recruiter finally responded after a month of the initial contact. He told my son that a bachelor's degree and his current certs and two years of work experience in a Help Desk job does not qualify him for the direct commission program. You should reach out to your state's AF recruiter asap for advice.

@@AnnMitt Supposedly my bachelors as well as my 5 years of SysAdmin experience and my certifications DO qualify me to apply. The review board would decide if I got accepted or not, and at what rank. I have my degree in cybersecurity. I have my A+, Net+, Sec+, CySA+, Pentest+, CASP+, SSCP, LPI Linux Essentials, and ITILv4 Foundation certifications now; and will also have my CISSP within a month. I also start my Masters in cybersecurity in August. But I am not able to join due to health issues.

@CyberSolutionsWithJared With a masters and all those certs, why join the military? Seems like you should be in high demand in corporate America (i.e. Microsoft, Amazon, Costco...). And my son was told by an AF recruiter that a BS degree in CS will not qualify him for Direct Commission. He needs a master's degree to even be considered.
