Thank you for sharing your story. Similar has been weighing heavily on me for a while, but this week especially I've been seriously considering following a similar road as you. You have given me a lot to think about with the reality v the rose glasses. I am so glad you put your videos and tutorials on yt. about two years ago I started watching stained glass how to videos was all gung ho..... saved some money and went to a supplier here in NJ thinking I was going for a bare bones starter kit wound up spending about a grand and came home with two pieces of glass.... well never started and everything is layed out to start in my basement... for two years ......this is the year that I make something! thanks for all your vids.

Agreed with Makenzie. dont think, just make. My first pieces were pieces of candy corn about 3.5 inches tall. simple pieces with curves to learn the basics of cutting, foiling and soldering and they came out horrible but it was a start LUL

You are the most honest and humble person I have seen on the web. I have learned from you more than from any others on this topic. I have been doing stained glass since my retirement (in 2017). It has changed my life. It has given me a new sense of accomplishment. You have inspired me to tackle on big projects. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. I hope you keep doing them. Thank you Makenzie for such a passion of a video. You are right as far as marketing for the stained glass hobby/ career. One thing for certain is there are not a lot of people like you with the skills and experience that you have in this craft. To me that is a plus for you in regards to the market and everything else that comes with it. I go every week to Beveled Edge in Windham Maine which is owned by Marlene Seavey. She is the only one in the area after there used to be 3 stained glass shops. And they closed. I know one of them called Glass Worx in Sanford closed because Cheryl the owner decided to retire since her husband retired from his job. The other 2 that closed was of course Covid, it hurt many of small businesses. But one thing I noticed and I can share with you is that Marlene has picked up several more students since the others closed. The positive thing is she now is doing this 5 days a week! Classes and new students. Now the negative, it is consuming many hours of her time, but she’s been doing this for nearly 22 years. And she is very good. Yes supplies and shipping and costs are a big issue to run a business. But you have to do what you have to do, if the prices go up on material etc, then you have to raise your prices as well, people will still pay, they get it, after all it is 2022, nothing is cheap anymore. But you are doing a great job, and please don’t get discouraged, we need great artists like you. You will get through any bumps in the road. Thank you so much again for a great informative video.

And you are right about that. I struggle so much with increasing prices because I too know the struggle. I'm torn for so many reasons right now. But I do know one thing and that is glass is my life. So however my glass career transforms over these next few years, is what it is. Thank you for the kind words and I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for that shop/Marlene. Maybe I can get out there and film a video! 🖤

I have never related to something so much !! I have been doing stained glass for 15 months, I do it full time now but keep agency work close ~ just in case! I see 3am most nights because I'm sat soldering and grinding away haha! I don't think it's luck, definitely 100% hard work! Thank you for your videos - they helped, and still help so much especially when I was starting out. Everything you said in this video was so real and relatable , thank you :-)

One of the things that made this story visually interesting was having that piece of reflective glass in front of you while you talked. While listening, I would sometime turn my gaze to the leaf pattern and then to the glass sheet that you didn't get around to cutting up. Seeing your reflection in the mirror coating was interesting as you were reflecting on your career path so far.

I've been working on stained glass for a few months now and I have to say, while I already wanted to do it, your videos really helped give me that push. I have friends asking when I'm going to start selling my pieces cause they all want them which is amazing, but I am still not happy with my soldering and cant imagine charging anyone for the pieces I have been making haha. I did, however, end up getting a job in a stained glass and leadlighting studio. Mainly admin but I get to play with the glass, but even with my staff discount the glass and other things are soooo expensive (there is a huge mark up here cause of how much it costs to import the glass), but I am so blessed to be there and am getting soo many tips.

Love these recent videos including DITL. It's been like listening to a friend, which is wonderful. I'm in my 40s and just got into glass a year ago. I've been working in a fast-paced high demand career that has me burned out for probably the last 8 years. I've almost reached a point to quit that, take a sabbatical (at least) and doing some things that bring me joy. But you're right, the reason I'm so torn is because I live on my own, and my extra space is currently set up for my day job (computer, etc.). It's such a difficult decision between work that drains you so much, but provides security, and following one's passion, but which would bring its own stressors. I'm just starting to feel that life is passing me by as I've only been working these past 20 years, always putting myself last. Would be curious to hear more about your life before glass as well. I am retired and my family thought I was crazy. So I got some supplies... cut some glass and BOOM i was hooked. Great experience sharing video Kenz about how you got into and how you're managing to survive and exceed in what you love and do...! Just remember "Anything good never comes easy in life" Nobody is going to do it like the way you do it... Also remember Stain glass has been around for centuries... According to Google evidence of stained glass was found in churches and monasteries in Britain back around 675 AD... That's over a thousand years...!!! So I don't think it's going to be going away any time too soon... Also, one other major thing to consider and be thankful for- in your life - is that You Have Your good health on your side to be able to do what you do... Using myself as an example - Even thou I've had cancer and went through Chemo in 1992 then again had cancer in 2003 and in 2012 I lost 80% of my pancreas... I'm still alive being able to do stained glass... Not at the level you do it at - which is remarkable btw- but at a level in my life where I am just happy to be alive & to be able to write back to you and view your KZbin channel and enjoy watching what you do and how you do it... You have worked very hard and smart at what you do and it definitely shows. To me it's just amazing you have brought the art of stained glass to the level you brought it to... Example: just looking at your shop-Stained Glass Store that “YOU” created… You have 5 Stars...! You should be VERY Proud of yourself for doing all that you have created and done as far as the Art and the business you created out of it… AND in the time you did it…!!! I’m trying to make a go out of it but not at the rate you’re doing at it. I just finished a nice custom-made lamp for my Endourologist… Now I’m working on designing a custom stained-glass clock for this local restaurant… You’re at a whole different level and I’d suggest keep doing what you’re doing because your work is AWESOME…!!!👍👍👌👌

I can vividly remember, one of those few videos I did find all those years ago was someone who didn't have full length arms and didn't have "normal" hands/ fingers -doing & teaching stained glass. Amazing. I think for those of us that have the stained glass bug and are able to physically achieve what we want are already so blessed. I hope you are in remission? Is that the correct term? And I plan on it! I do believe this is it. This is the career I'll have forever. Whatever way that comes. 🖤

I have skills. Various stuff...nothing really important.. I have subscribed your channel because I find you to be the best with respect to providing good information on the hands on.. While others may be good, your delivery is great as well as your skills. I watch other videos and rate them with respect to you.. They lack.. I make stained glass "stuff" because I want to.... no money involved, so easy for me to play. I will soon buy a kiln as I wish to make bevels in different color glass.. as apparently glass wants to pull back so as to be 1/4 inch thick. Perfect for bevelled glass, as a store nearby on occasion has to fix a church window needing colored bevels. As to your discussion of making a living doing stained glass, I understand and appreciate your issues. And wish you well. If I can help, ask.. John

The thing I learned about big businesses closing branches or moving overseas... is they're still the reason small businesses were crushed. Where there's a need after a business moves out, there's an opportunity to create a small business.

Another great video. Do you think starting with customs made your work ten times slower? Because that's how I felt with resin art. It just took a toll on my creativity being an outlet for me. I really don't think I will be doing any more unless it's an unusual or special reason to. These days, I'm seriously considering switching gears completely, buying some basics, making a few pieces to sell around Christmas. Booth fees are high but the flea market charges $40 a day and I could get things rolling if I start now and go hard all November and December. Edit (switch gears to glass work).

I tried stained glass before I became a fuser, there was no info online for stained glass and the classes in the one local store where sold out six months in advance. I taught myself to fuse, no info about that either. I’m also lucky I have an assmasimg husband who supports me.

The only thing that can save Stained glass is automation. CNC water jet or CNC scoring.

It really is such an expensive hobby right now it is really disappointing how costly it is and then you know.. a lot of people don’t want to pay artists a fair price! Uhg 😭 I’m like $250 in the whole just for glass alone on my current project but I love it so much and I know the right person will come along and love it too and pay a fair price 🤞

Yes, I think it sounds better. I just listened to your packaging video and the sound quality was not as good. It sounded ‘thin’ (I don’t know how else to describe it). The new sound is a deeper sound and more rounded, less tinny. Thanks for being so open with us.😘
