I liked how honest this is. I'm still coming to terms with my accident. Falling on your neck when you're 14 isn't really a normal adolescent experience. Thank you for making this.

Kit, your very welcome and I feel for you I really do. I have thought about how different things would be if this happened at a younger age as apposed to when I was 25. I am thankful that I had many of my teen and early adulthood experiences as an able bodied person.

Oh dear, when I was 20, while driving to work with my little car, that morning I felt so tired and I drove straight on a curve. I've broken L5 splitted in two parts but the spinal went only partially damaged. It took 6 month to learn to walk again. I've been lucky after 32 years to use the wheel chair only when knees don't let me walk anymore. A big hug from Italy

30 years ago, my mother was in a car with her boyfriend and she had no seatbelt on. Her boyfriend was driving and he hit a curb. She was luckily flung out of the window, if she hadn't been, she would be dead. Her side of the car was completely crushed by the impact. She landed in a ditch and broke her spinal cord. A couple months before, she had wished that she could be in a hospital to lose weight (because hospital food is horrible) little did she know, that would happen. She has never let her paralysis stop her from doing anything a normal person would do. She swims, drives, had kids, got married, works, and is happy. She has never let her injury make her sad because she knows that she is stronger because of it... I admire her positive outlook on life and hope to grow up to be as happy as her.

I have a friend who also would not be alive today if she had been wearing her seatbelt. She was thrown clear and the area of the vehicle where she had been sitting was crushed. Even though her life was saved because she didn't have her belt on, I will not start my car without putting my seatbelt on. I believe it should be a personal choice and not a law.

Hey Brain great videos. My name is Norman I'm from Hawaii and I'm currently in the hospital because I got into a motorcycle accident on sep 13th 2016 exactly like you did . I was getting off work but the road was slightly damp and I started to wobble out and exactly like you I hit the curb then I hit a tree . I was not using protective gear or a helmet and because of that I suffered internal injury a shatter shoulder and a lot of dislocates and fractures to my back. I have fractures to my t5 and 6. Plus serious injury to the t10 vertebrate . Right now I'm about to be discharge I'm scared. I've learn a lot at rehab and watching as must you tube videos about paraplegic living as I can. I wanna thank you for all your educational videos . I appreciate it all.

I had a motorcycle injury in 2005 and it consisted of massive head injury, spinal cord damage and crushed tailbone.... I also have little to no feeling from under my breasts down.... I am forntunate enough to walk but I am still considered a paraplegic that began as a quadraplegic at the onset of the accident originally....thank you for being such an inspiration and showing me better ways to deal with my new life... It's been almost 13 years and I am still getting used to it..... Thank you for sharinh

TheUnknown Nobody said he isn't doing fine for himself 😂 Again, felling bad about his accident isn't close to a pity party. For you to claim you speak for him or his feelings is quite laughable... especially putting words into people's mouth when the comment is very clear.
@theunknown9372
@theunknown9372 6 жыл бұрын
Republican 4U2NV I never said anyone said he wasn't doing fine, just stating a very noticeable fact. Also, I never said to claim to speak for him, I said "it SEEMS like he's doing just fine and doesn't look like he wants people feeling bad". Sure, you're correct a person feeling bad about an accident isn't a pity party but, if you actually take the time to read the comment it says they feel bad for him NOT the accident. In which case, obviously the comment isn't very clear if you can't even state it correctly. So maybe before trying to "correct" someone, get all the facts straight.

I ride motorcycles for 10/11 years now, I'm 26. This is constantly in my mind, I mean, I had 2 crashes in 10/11 years and both times it was a bad driver hitting me. Motorcycle is not the danger, people are. People need to get out of their phones, ride/drive safe, have others in mind, don't drink or do drugs and drive... So many things had to change so we riders could feel safe on the road. Thank you for sharing this.

Hello Brain, Thank you for having the courage to share your story. It has to be helpful to many. I am so sorry for your accident and pray for you to stay strong and well. I googled the word paraplegic so I would know how to spell it and up came your video. Due to meeting a relative recently who lost his leg in a motor cycle accident back in New Hampshire and hearing his story this caught my attention. He became an Olympic gold medal and silver medal winner in the Olympics back in Japan and also went to school to learn about prosthetic and how to design them. He still ski's and rides a mountain bike. His will to succeed is amazing and he even got asked to ski in a Warren Miller movie, jumping out of a helicopter on the top of the mountain on one leg. His story is amazing and you reminded me of him, by just doing this video and sharing with people what it is like and how to just do simple things like getting dressed. keep it up and I am glad I was able to hear your story. We never know when it could be us. It gives me much more understanding and encouragement! Thanks again!

Our cousin was driving his motorcycle down a country road when a car turned just ahead of him, he tried to slow down still hitting the tire, landed in an open field, but his injuries were fatal. Totally know the feeling of not being able to wrap your head around something, my doctor had to repeat a procedure 4 times before I could comprehend it. I wondered why he never grew impatient with me so I guess he figured out what my problem was. Anyway both you and your videos obviously provide great inspiration & strength for many. Hey man. I recently was in a motorcycle accident as well. I was on my way to work and less than a mile away, a cab blows through a stop sign, leaving me with no time to react. Well, that was about 1.5 years ago now. I've watched most of your videos and its inspired me to get back into driving soon. But I felt the same exact way as you explained while I was in the hospital with the doctors coming in and poking me everyday. And being so drugged up for so long, you don't have a real sense of reality and what has actually happened. I'm naturally hard headed, so I won't let a doctor tell me what I will and won't do in the future. I'll make those decisions for myself. I've come a long way since the accident, and I don't plan on slowing down any time soon. Don't get complacent. Keep pushing forward.

@@danielswarovski6462 yes! Definitely thought about ending my life several times. It was super scary in the beginning. I didn’t have the balls to roll in front of that bus though (literally speaking) and I ultimately chose to try to figure it out on my own. It was a rough ride though. Not sugar coating it. What got me through was challenging myself for little tasks. Each small task led to bigger accomplishments. I really think that’s the answer to getting over “the hump.”

Thanks for sharing your story. The way you've adapted with such obvious grace to your new life proves that what we really are is not our bodies, not our circumstances or experiences because all those things are perishable and change. What does not change and never fades is who we really are - the soul, the will, the sprit to never give up, to keep moving forward. It's why humans no longer live in caves and have stood on the moon. The human spirit can never be confined!

Love all your videos, the way you talk so detailed and composed about all the issues you have to deal with as a paraplegic....my husband has a bike too and we both love to ride, I am only the passenger and as you say you as the biker are doing everything right and it can still happen....I am amazed at how you probably have to drive by the spot and tree where it happened every day when you leave work, is that not always a little bit of a stinger?

Hey, Brian! So... I just subscribed to your channel about an hour ago, and I've watched a few of your videos. First was the one about your adapted motorcycle. (AWESOME!) I just now watched this one, and I can see how painful it is to talk about. There's a different tone to your voice in this one compared to the others. I'm also a paraplegic. My accident was on Christmas Day of 1994, and I know how much it sucks to go back to the place that it happened. Fortunately for me, it's out of my way to get there. I can't imagine how it's gotta be for you to see the spot that changed your life forever on a daily basis. Anyway... Congratulations on all the accomplishments you've made since your injury. And THANK YOU for posting all these videos. They'll be especially helpful to anyone that's new to the world of post SCI life. Well, I'm off to watch some more of your vids and maybe make some more comments. Just figured I'd say hi.

Thanks for dropping me a line, Nathan! You are right...my injury video definitely has a different tone. It's tough to drive by the scene of the accident but just like all things, it has gotten easier especially since I don't have a choice. I have the most trouble on late summer days when the conditions, lighting, ect are exactly the same as they were that day. I picture myself on my bike getting ready to turn but instead, I wait for the oncoming car to pass and don't rip on the throttle as hard. I still go through the "what-ifs" all the time and wonder where I would be if the accident hadn't happened. I also wonder if I would be with my wife as the accident brought us back together after a short break up. At this point, who the hell knows. What I do know is I am dealing with this situation the best I know how and I will continue to deal with it as much as it sucks sometimes. Wishing you the best in your journey too!

I know talking about your accident is hard. I bet it is even harder having to leave work everyday and be reminded of where your life changed forever. I know when my son got injured (a tree fell on him while swimming in a creek), when I went back to work after being out with him for 6 months. I was passing close to where he got hurt and I cried. It was so hard moving forward but like in your recent video that is what you have to do. Being his mother I had to push him forward and not look back. I hope you and your wife have a blessed life!

Yes, it is frustrating to pass the accident site on a daily basis and re-live the experience. At this time, it has been 5 years and I don't think about it nearly as much these days.

Great videos, Brian! I'm L4-5 incomplete, CES, but have had to have my L3-4 and L5-S1 stabilized, the whole darn spine is just playing disk dominos, sheesh! Sorry about your accident but I love your attitude. Been paralyzed 5 yrs. now, have been driving with hand controls for 4 yrs. Before I had the "real" hand controls put in my car, I used TNT Portables, they are great, I learned to drive with them in less than 10 minutes. Looking forward to more videos from you, God bless and be well!

Hey Bryan...My husband was in a motorcycle accident and it was very similar to yours. He did get hurt,and was temporarily paralyzed,but now has lots of back problems,and loses feeling in his legs,back seizes up,etc. My son,on the other hand,was in a car accident with his aunt and cousin and his 2 siblings. Unfortunately,Ryan got the worst of it(he was only 7 at the time),and he has been in a wheelchair ever since. I am so glad someone like you has videos out to show him you can have a life still,you can drive/work/etc. He will be 17 on monday,and I have shared your videos with him on facebook. I will send him your way. Maybe you can answer any questions he has,or concerns...? TY so much for doing this,and being who you are. God Bless! :)

Hey thanks for sharing your story. I am a recent complete T5 and also had an unfortunate mix of events turn a regular Saturday bike ride into something a lot less regular. I am almost three months post injury and watched most of your videos. They are very useful. Would be awesome if you could do a Q&A video or something. I certainly have a bunch of questions for you in terms of what to watch out for in the coming months and what you wish you would have done differently from the getgo..

+Life 2.0 I'm sorry to hear about your injury but I'm glad you found your way here. I love the idea of a Q&A. I'll have to think about the best way to accomplish that. First thing I can say is it will take you body about 6-12 months to "stabilize" to the point where you get your bowel and bladder function situated and figure out a good management routine. I'm sure there are things I would have done differently but I'm having trouble remembering now. Feel free to send me a private message with any questions you may have and I would be glad to help if I can.

I lost a friend from a motorcycle accident when he was 22 around 11 years ago, a car hit his bike & he didn't have a helmet on & naturally he flew off & into the windshield of another car head first & immediately that was it. I know this accident changed your life in every way you can name or imagine but I'm still glad you survived it & are alive to tell your tail as I'm sure your family & friends were with not loosing you due to this bro. Yes motorcycles are very dangerous & I myself haven't been comfortable with getting on another one anymore again either.

You are such an awesome person, plus you have a Fantastic attitude about life! I wish you nothing but the Best for the rest of your life. I am sure that in about 100 years (long after we are gone) that medical science will come up with a break threw on how to completely repair a severed spinal cord. It would be so awesome if they found a way to attach stem cells from our own body to our damaged spinal cord and have the cells rejuvenate the damaged part of the cord. I know it will eventually happen, I just don't know if it will happen in our life time. You take good care of yourself, I'm glad you are working and getting on with you life and not feeling sorry for yourself. You are a great inspiration for everyone who is suffering with spinal cord injuries :-)

I've always said I wish they could repair spinal cords.It would be good even if they could use machinery which works in the same way as the spinal cord system.I agree that Brian has an amazing attitude.I don't think I could be the same,I would probably just go to pieces.
