Gilbert "Durinho" Burns talks about his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey from starting off as a young kid in Brazil to becoming Black Belt world champion after defeating Kron Gracie. He tells several stories from his younger days including when he felt he really belonged at the competitive Black Belt level. Gilbert will fight for the UFC title February 13th vs former teammate Kamaru Usman at UFC 258.
Gilbert Alexander Pontes Burns, is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and submission grappler who currently competes in the welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). As a grappler, Burns is a three-time World Champion and World Cup gold medalist.

Hey Gilbert, can you tell us how you learned English? As a brazilian and a fan of brazilian fighters there was always that sensation that the ufc wasn't pushing fighters that didn't know the english language. Cheers man and hope you win that belt!

It's true, they are not as marketable to the North American English fans but also it's because they don't (or can't) promote themselves to us either. It can be done with just a couple words or a single sentence but winning the belt changes everything and forces us to accept them

It's true. Brazilian fighters do not need to have very good English. If they have a few words, they can be marketable as a large portion of the MMA fanbase are english speakers even if they speak other languages. It's always good to learn a language like English but you don't have to pressure yourself if you don't want to learn. But if you want to be marketable, a few words, a few sentences will do.
