Rabbit let me give you some back story on the mini-van that I heard. Iacocca was under pressure to produce a follow on success to the Mustang. He went all in on the mini-van, had Ford spend millions in engineering, market research and customer interviews to be certain they would be able to sell them. So when Henry Ford II fired him customarily that's when the negotiations would begin. Maybe he wanted an office or use of a company plane for a few years and in return he'd sign an agreement not to bad mouth the company. Ford was stunned when all Iacocca asked for was all the reports for the mini-van. Afterwards Ford laughed about it, telling other execs that all he wanted were reports that were going to sit on a shelf gathering dust. How would those reports help him in retirement? But then Chrysler hired Iacocca and in little more than a year thanks to said research they introduced the mini-van to much success. It took Ford two and a half years to introduce their mini-van and decades later it's still an also ran to Chrysler's. Lee Iacocca really did have the last laugh.

I have said for years that someone needs to come out with a cheap mini-truck again. They were all over the place back in the 80s because they were inexpensive and dependable. I'd say it was actually the k car that saved Chrysler, with the caravan being a variation of the k chassis. Every car in the full line up was a variation of the k car, from the dodge omni ecobox to the Chrysler imperial, all the same chassis with a 2.2l or 2.5l engine (which used the same internals minus rods and crank). They went from 90hp to 230 depending on if it was turbo or not, and single or dual cam. Dead reliable engine with a simple chassis platform and different sheet metal to denote the different manufacturers ethos. Kept costs down and they sold a bazillion of them. Hell, they had a deal with Shelby and made some Shelby cars out of them, from the first American hot hatch (GLH and GLHT) to the Shelby Daytona Iroc, which had 230 factory horses and a simple boost controller turned that into 350 on factory parts. Mopar performance sold kits to supe any 2.2l turbo car into a monster that held its own with anything from that Era, with a simple ecu, injector and turbo swap. The ecu's even had a race gas mode. All the SRT stuff today is directly related to those cars.

As a piece of history, my great grandfather did something very similar with a 66 El Camino, a 61 Studebaker, and a 71 Dodge truck, all because they were lightly damaged in transit. The funniest one was the Dodge though. It was a factory ordered Dodge Dude, custom ordered for a ranch in Wyoming, 360, 727, limited slip, premium interior, white on tan. He got it for less than half of wholesale because it had been fogged with rattlecans while it sat in the train car in Denver. The dealer simply ordered another truck for the rancher instead of having it repainted.

I'm not gonna lie--I want one. I have a firm rule of never buying the first model year of anything, though, so I'm waiting a year. I want to see how they shake out with some use, etc. I love the idea of something that is a good little utility vehicle for a daily driver. A trip to Lowes or a quick dump run after cleaning out the garage, picking up a piece of furniture from Marketplace, etc. We could easily rent or borrow something bigger for the 2% of the time we need to haul or tow something that the Maverick couldn't handle.

With inflation announced at 6.8% last month I would not wait. Eco can still ordered today. When I need more "bed" I will rent a 8 to 12 ft trailer.

I think it needs an "Adrenaline Package" like the later year Explorer-Tracs. The styling and size are pretty similar, so the name plate would make sense.

How did you talk your dealer down on price for damage. I just got the message my hybrid is in. And picking up after work. I can see in the pic there is damage. But the salesman doesn’t know that I know yet

Rob, please talk in your next video how or what you were able to negotiate on the price or options. I ordered three 2023 Mavericks XL Hybrid with spray-in bed liner, full spare, & $100 tow hitch receiver but paid sticker price. How were you able to get a deal lower than sticker for a truck sold out in four days for 2023's?

The "K" car is what really saved Chrysler and the minivan was a bonus.
@jfv652 жыл бұрын
The minivan created an entire new market segment. There wasn't anything like it on the road. The closest thing on the road at that time was the Renault Espace. Renault was so unsure about that car that they had it built by an outside company (Matra). But it turnen outvto beva good decission because the market demand was there. The Chrysler Caravan was so succesful that it even sold well in Europe. ( which was remarkable for a US car, only Tesla manages to do the same today) Chrysler even decided to build a diesel powered version in Austria. Steyr-Puch-Daimler was commisioned to build them. As for smaller pick-ups. Yeah, the demand exists. Every small pick-up i see in Europe is Japanese. It would be even more ballsier if they made a small EV-pick-up. It would sell like hot cakes.

@@jfv65 Props on the history. In terms of an EV truck, maybe it’s me but I’ve always thought a meter reader / delivery type vehicle was the perfect application for an EV.

Think about it - Someone could buy the basic XL package and use this as their get around vehicle, picking stuff up to put in the bed, run a small business out of it. Folks driving small cars could still find this to be suitable for them due to the size and now the added versatility of having a bed instead of a trunk. Now, think about someone like Rabbit - buys the low end XL and customizes the hell out of it! Even paying invoice price, he could put another $8k into this and it would look and feel incredible. This pickup is going to be a gamechanger. Mark my words.

How many people do you know that have full size trucks that only go to the grocery store or Lowes on weekends? Looking out my window right now, I can count 6 full sized pickup trucks at neighbors houses. 2 are used as daily drivers, don't haul much. 1 sits in the driveway but the guy uses it to haul stuff for a side hustle. The other 3 sit in the driveway all day every day except to drive to the mail box or to pick up project materials once every few months for home renovations. The Maverick can handle all of their needs at a much lower payment, but we're stuck in the mentality of "gotta have the big truck". Don't get me wrong, if you presented me a F150 and a Maverick with no $$ involved, just pick one - I'd pick the F150. But if my usage, finances, etc are involved - I pick the Maverick over and over.

I can't believe you got me thinking about buying a Maverick. I never thought about it until seeing this video. I wonder how well it tow's? I don't need to tow everyday, just every once in a while can it do that when called upon.
@rabbits_used_cars2 жыл бұрын
Can tow up to 4k lbs properly equipped. A transit 350 only tows 5k pounds.

The Fast Lane Truck did a tow test with a Maverick, and it towed the maximum capacity just fine. The fuel mileage took a bigger hit than we typically expect from towing with a full sized pickup truck, though.
@americanrambler49722 жыл бұрын
This Maverick is a touch down for Ford. It’s a mini/compact truck done right. Being a unit body pickup is not an issue in a light duty truck. It’s been done before. Remember the VW type II pickup based on the Type II transporter? (VW micro bus), the Chevrolet Corvair 95 load side and ramp side pickups, the VW Rabbit pickup, the Dodge Omni based Rampage pickup, the Subaru BRAT and Baja pickups and the Jeep Comanche pickup? Those All were unit body without frame pickups. And they were all tough little pickups. The Rabbit and Subaru BRAT even sold fairly well. I believe the Maverick will be a hit because it does so many things right right out of the box. And it comes in at an affordable price with good comfort and power. Right now, the Hyundai Santa Cruise is the only direct competition. The Maverick is a size class pickup truck which is offered around the world and has a large number of vendors. We do not see them in the US. But go to Mexico and you see a number of different ones we do not see north of the boarder. I owned a Jeep Comanche and drove it for 288,000 miles. It was one of my lifetime favorite cars I have owned. I have looked at a Maverick XLT front wheel drive EcoBoost pickup. It was a nice truck and was well south of S30,000. All in all, a nice truck. An XLT with the Eco Boost engine, Max tow package and FX4 package with some knobby tires is a great package for under $30,000. In black, it looks sinister and cool, Red really pops, but Cactus Gray is probably the best color because you don’t need to wash it every day.

My 99 Mazda B4000 is still to this day the best vehicle I've ever owned. Replaced my 2010 Honda Element and it was actually a big upgrade. Can't wait to test drive a turbo Maverick with the 8 speed.

Honda changed the small(er) truck market. They proved it and now Ford is willing to dive in seeing there are actual buyers that are more than happy with a unibody truck

Rob I can relate to the feeling of driving something that belongs to a pest control company I've owned a 2006 Chevy Colorado and over the last 6 years I've been adding personal touches to it. When I first got it it felt very spartan and lacking. Funny enough it's previous owner was a company that ordered it as a fleet vehicle. But now it feels upscale, has more features than how it came standard, and overall a great truck to own. I'd wager the Colorado is the last great minitruck

Awesome story teller, enjoyed that so much! I own a Ford F150 with a tiny Ecoboost 2.7, absolutely love it, usually get about 20.4 driving easy, but even just as a stock F150 it’s sometimes hard to park, getting in and out of the bed is tough for a fat short legged old man, I’m thinking maybe about 5 or 6 years from now a Maverick might be in my future😎

I always had big trucks for work, hauling large trailers. I sold my business 10yrs ago and sold my duallys around the same time. I always have s10s around for little hauling and general cruising. I never understood people owning big trucks that didn't need them. It always seemed like a waste to me. I bought a Santa Cruz but I like the Maverick also. I have a few s10s also but static dropped minitrucks don't make comfortable daily drivers.

little s10's, Rangers, Colorado's are terrible to drive. Way to small inside.

@@mph5896 Depends on how fat you are I guess. I'm normal size and I daily drove an 84 s10 single cab with a 4" body drop. I drove it cross country more than once for shows in the 90's. My preferred daily right now is an 84 s15 Sierra Classic single cab with a 5/6 suspension drop. I drive my extended cab Xtreme pretty regularly also but it's a bigger truck and you can feel it.
