Ben, I started watching your videos training for the London Marathon last year and have been watching on here and Strava since. 8 weeks ago I slipped during a run out in the New Forest and broke my tibia and fibula so this video really struck a chord. I now have bolts and a plate all the way up my tibia and can't run for a year :( The main thing I've learned is to appreciate the suddenness of life sometimes and the strength of the relationships around you. You'll bounce back so keep your head up and if you fancy a crutch race sometime soon let me know!

Hi Ben. The freak nature of this reminds me of a time I came off my road bike. I’d been on my own, on a deserted straight road, good surface, steady speed, bright and dry - everything perfect - yet I found myself in a heap on the road with a broken femur. Puzzled me for ages and I never did work it out. I guess these random things just happen sometimes and we just have to chalk them up as unexplained.

Wow, wasn't expecting that. I thought the reason for the accident would have been something more serious, like stepping out in front of a car or something (although thinking about that now your injuries would have been a lot more serious). I thought the way you were talking was because you'd caused injury or damage to someone or thing else and you were saying it was totally your fault, no blame on the other person. So glad you're ok though and on the mend. Used to live down by Island Gardens and used to use the Greenwich Foot Tunnel (and sometimes the Overground between Wapping and Rotherhithe if I was feeling lazy, Tower bridge if I wasn't) on my weekly longer loop run on a Sunday, so it was great to see it again!!! All the best and glad to see you're doing well and getting out in these strange times we're living through right now.

Great news about the advanced marathon training plan, just what I need for Valencia! (Though I'll likely be on the top end of that range). If you want to get over those speed bump things in the pavement I'd recommend getting some big flywheels and you'll easily get over most bumps, I have some on my longboard which I use for getting around on (I ride switch half of the time to keep the muscles balanced). I fell off my board so many times back when I started, the advantage of a board though is that you can easily jump off if things start going wrong, you're not locked in.

I fractured my fibula walking, and I do mean walking down the stairs. Not playing, just walking down the stairs talking to my son. I said the same thing that you did. I don’t do other things because I do not want to hurt myself. I don’t want to do anything that will take me away from lifting, running, or biking. I injured myself on May 6th and I have been in recovery ever since. I have had my ups and downs. I keep myself together by praying and planning to come back better than ever. It's called Tactile Corduroy Paving comprising rounded bars running length ways across the direction a pedestrian is walking. The bars are 6mm high and 20mm wide. This type of surface warns visually impaired people of the presence of a specific hazard. This could be the top or bottom of stairs, a level crossing or a ramp. It is also used where a footway joins a shared route. The idea is that it highlights a potential hazard.

Hi Ben. A couple of future video suggestions. Firstly an in depth look at your data leading up to the Valencia marathon and your thoughts why it went so well (I have a theory about doing a lot of long slow miles for ultra marathons until the last 10 weeks of marathon specific training). Secondly, how to recover after an ultra marathon, especially if you have another event; specifically I have the centurion grand slam this year and some of the 100 mile races are only 4 weeks apart.

Balance got thrown forward by slowing down. Front foot came off. Went in front of board. Placed your foot. Board hit ankle and snapped it as your weight is on front foot. Board then shoots backwards. And you roll onto your back. Simples

Some years ago i watched a young boy about 4 years old kneel on the shared walk/cycleway and feel the tile running the width of the path. I was humbled by this and when I got home I looked up tactile paving. Horizontal stripes? There are stairs or an obstacle ahead of you. i think there are five different types of tiles.

Three years later I still reflect on how the heck a small misstep created such havoc. Like you I tried to recreate what happened but it still seems unreal. Lots of trail runs, lots of falls - no injuries. And just a simple slip on broken asphalt. I couldn't run that route for a long time but when I finally did it was like a load lifting. Just when by there this morning in the pouring rain. Quick question - should you be putting weight on your foot so soon after surgery? Great to see this post accident videos. Heal well.

Hey! Met with the surgeon 2 weeks post surgery and he said I can partial weight bare, so walk with crutches and the boot.. as I was here. Former skateboarder here whose snapped my ankle a couple times. I wouldn’t be surprised if those rumble strips caused you to lose your balance forward slightly, so that you stepped in front of the board while it was in motion, causing the front of the board to immediately slam into your ankle and roll it outward. With your foot planted on the ground the board could easily run into it a snap it.
@BenParkes

Zac Munroe that’s the most likely scenario I think.. plus I could have easily knocked the throttle to full speed when unstable.. so it really but my ankle hard.. don’t think I’ll ever know! But doesn’t matter.. just focusing on rebuilding now! Thanks for the insight! 😀

Sorry to read but a tip for the future although not sure this works as well on an electric skateboard but in my hey day of skating we would bounce of those bumps either by lifting up the front truck so you bounce the back wheels off of them, that way you don’t run the risk of all the weight of the front truck stopping dead. The more adventurous way is to do the same thing but off the nose and you push the front truck down and “nose bonk” over them 😂

I decided to try skateboarding 4 years ago for the first time since I was a teenager (at the age of 28). I went to a local skatepark and ended up falling pretty hard on my hip attempting to just ollie which hurt pretty bad for a couple weeks. Then 5 minutes after my fall as I was sitting on the side contemplating life, another guy at the skatepark crashed hard right in front of me and broke his ankle pretty badly (it was "flopping around") and the guy was screaming bloody murder. I immediately went home and put my skateboard in my closet where it still is today. I don't regret trying skateboarding again but I have no plans on going back lol.

Ben, have thought about what trainers you are going to use when you start back running? Presume you don’t want anything too aggressive whilst trying to build the strength back up. I am just coming back from 8 months out after fracturing my foot. The most painful thing right now are the tendons and ligaments in the foot, as they are trying to stretch and get used to the impact again.

The New Balance 1080 I already have should be nice and soft to get back going again. If not, then might have to get some super soft Hoka Bondi or similar for the first few weeks. Will see how I get on once I start run / walking!

That is reminiscent of what happened to me. At 53 years old I fell off a One Wheel and really screwed up my shoulder. The doctor said it was like football (American) players colliding on the gridiron. Not good for 53 year old. That was from landing in the grass vice hitting the light pole. I figure I got off easy.

Get well soon friend! Check out One Wheel. I like it better than traditional electric skateboards because it is so much smoother over those bumpy obstacles. Interesting there’s wrist knee elbow and helmet protection, maybe someone can design ankle protection please!

I missed the last step going downstairs in my house. I had my hands full carrying a large beach bag and wasn’t holding onto the railing. Rolled my ankle and wound up with a fracture of the Di Stella fibula. The older I get the more careful I should be. Mad at myself for not paying attention

I just got my stitches out and put into a walking boot. Still non weight bearing because my break was very bad. Maybe in Nov, Dec I can start putting weight back on it.

What if you hit the light pole after you slipped off the board? Or you could have hit the brick wall on the left side?🤷‍♂️

My guess is your left foot came off, which flipped the board into your ankle. You're an inspiration, keep up the great work. I've broken my ankle twice, still running!

Injuries can be so random. The two times I've sprained my ankle happened while walking/running on a completely flat surface?

I broke my right thigh 4cm under my hip so quickly and unReady in stretching thigh but then I heard a really scary sound like knak and I fell down on the floor and the whole right bone was broken quite clean over and my right leg actually was not in contact to my body for a whole long time and I got a surgery and I still still have much pain and I have been told it could take a year before I did not had pain any more. Yours cincerely Inga Denmark.

Is it possible you hit your ankle with your other leg? Shins and knees are pretty hard things (speaking from experience)

Hey , I’m after some advice, I’m constantly getting shin splints when I run I always let them heal and try not to run to far to fast but they always seem to come back do you have any advice ?? Thank you
@SamStow
@SamStow 4 жыл бұрын
Try shorter strides and higher cadence, shin splints have been associated with overuse of the tibialis anterior through heel striking and controlling the front of the foot coming down after the heel has touched. So a flatter foot landing and more relaxed foot can help with this. Not overstriding is a good place to start.

It’s completely different for everyone - so no promises on whether this would help! - but what helped mine was lifting my heels up more as I run, plus (oddly) never sitting cross-legged... a bit strange but worked for me!

I wonder if the point of the skateboard lines up with the impact point, I guess you will only be able to measure up once cast off. Wishing you a speedy recovery 👍
@BenParkes
@BenParkes 4 жыл бұрын
I have measured it.. don't worry!! It doesn't line up, but the wheels stick out at the front and certainly could have knocked me over, then the wooden board could have hit my ankle when I was on my way down. It's possible.. seems unlikely, but possible!

Yeah.. it seems very unlikely it can go ahead given where the world is right now. I know it's not the same in South Africa as it is in the UK, but surely it can't go ahead!

As a South African club runner, I can tell you Comrades will very likely be cancelled. They're just waiting until April but we're already under a 21 day lockdown. As runners, we are rather looking at Cape Town Marathon in October. Fingers crossed.
