A fantastic little model there, excellent work. At around 10:30 you mentioned that no such engine as a four-coupled pannier such as this existed. Well sir, I am delighted to introduce you to "Dorothy", ex-P&M no.5 and ex-GWR no.795. Built as an 0-4-0ST by Brush Engineering in 1903 (the same Brush that would go on to build the famous class 47s fifty years later), it was employed by the shunting contractor Powesland & Mason at Swansea harbour, being taken into GWR stock upon the company's absorption in 1924. Renumbered to 795, it was rebuilt into an 0-4-0PT with a new Swindon boiler in 1926, being sold into industry about 1928-1929. It worked into the 60s under the National Coal Board, gaining the name Dorothy somewhere along the way. Googling "GWR 795 0-4-0" turns up a few images. I'd link a photograph but my last attempt at this was deleted. To cut a long story short, your little engine has premise to say the least!

I love the baby Pannier, it's adorable. Very interesting to see the process of building a model like this from scratch, as this is the first time I've sat down and watched a full build of a model engine, but I have to say it is very interesting to see it all come together with the way all the parts look and how precise they have to be. It looks fabulous! As for doing things the old way, I have a couple of books from Popular Mechanics, the turn of the 1800's into the 1900's that had "projects for boys" it tells you how to make your track out of wood and lay metal on top, how to make your armature and wind the motors how to cut out wheels from wood and put metsl tires on them. I suspect most of the people saying "Why don't you do things the old way?!" Would really rebel about doing things the real "Old Way" if they had to do that for their layout. Imagine if they went to a doctor who used medieval medical practices "leeches, leeches for everyone!!" You keep doing what you are doing, you do it well.

Love it Neal. Very well done. I haven’t got a 3d printer, but I do love doing my own custom stuff. At the moment I’m working on Hornby Dublo 3-rail. Most of it I’m keeping original. But I’ve just been working on a Dublo Duchess of Atholl. As it was very tired I had no regrets stripping it back to bare metal and giving it a full refurbishment and repaint. Dublo afficionados will have heart attacks. It’s been finished in LMS 1946 expérimental blue as 6234 Duchess of Abercorn. With the détail picked out and wheel rims blackened it looks incredible. And certainly not a 70yr old toy ! This Pannier is just perfect ! I particularly like your printed numberplates. 6234 got nameplates and smokebox numberplate made up on PowerPoint and printed on paper (I can’t justify the cost of etched plates), to my surprise once fitted and varnished they easily look as good as etched plates.

An excellent model Tris, well done, it runs beautifully which is testimony to the care you took building the chassis and gearbox. Don't pay any attention to the Luddites who criticise your use of 3D printing, its just another medium and it gets a good result. There are other channels who get knocked for scratch building using newer technologies and its about your attention to detail that counts. 3D printers have made modeling affordable, and you are clearly showing the versatility. Keep it up sir !

Sorry to contradict you but there really was a GWR 0-4-0PT - No 795 which was rebuilt from a Powlesland & Mason saddletank in 1926. Any criticism says far more about the people who offer it than about what you've achieved. This project is truly wonderful. I've subscribed and I'll be following what you do next. A great job using advanced modelling methods--CAD, 3D printing, CNC machining, and etching. Congratulations! Tamiya acrylics have an alcohol base rather than water and can be thinned with IPA. well done Tris , didn't realise you did the brass-work too !? love your pannier tank , very much my choice for model rail . I have tried such gearboxes, on and off, from the late 1960s to the 1970s, but never had a satisfactory result; it always resulted in 'hunting' or going easier one way but with less efficiency the other way. With all my scratch-built models, I find the old way the most reliable - a low-geared gear with the worm acting directly onto it (the mesh created by the temporary insertion of a cigarette paper). I never worked out what the problem was with these solder-up gearboxes, however, with this little engine, its tiny drivers require a very small final drive gear wheel.
@OONeal2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking time to explain your experiances to me. I will be trying more of these gearboxes over time and will build more of an opinion and report back on a future video.

I like taking risks with my model making, I've made mistakes, but learnt from them and other times there have been happy accidents. It's made me a better modeller. which brand of paint did you use for the copper and brass bits? It barely leaves any brush strokes!

It is by Vallejo in there metal colour ranges. I gloss varnish them afterwards and they come out really nicely.

@OO Neal, I love this! I've been thinking about getting myself a 3D Printer and a desktop CNC for projects just like this and you've inspired me! Can you provide the links to the sites you got the motor, wheels, etc from? I can't wait to start making my own engines! Thanks!

Beautiful. I'd love one of these in 7mm, however I don't have a 3D printer so I can't do it myself...
