it took me 2 1/2 weeks, but I finished my breathing tank and regulator and it works great! I just copied yours part for part, the hardest thing to get right was the spring to regulate 135psi...it took me a week to get the spring correct but I got it done and it works great...I'm not a scuba diver so I just stood in the gulf and put my head under water and it worked great...I can easily gather sea shells and find treasure in very shallow waters...thanks!!

So, I am a certified diver (or it's probably more accurate to say I got certified about three decades ago), and I'll give my take on this. First of all, this is pretty cool! Jacques Cousteau wasn't certified when he started, and he didn't have the advantages of a wealth of freely available information. My concerns wouldn't be the bends, as your equipment limitations won't let you get deep enough for long enough to dissolve enough nitrogen into your blood that the bends become a serious concern. Your biggest health issue would probably be coming up too quickly, and that's probably a low risk as well. Remember to blow bubbles when ascending. You should really try and find a diver who has experience with (or is certified in) equipment repair. Other than that, I would wonder about your regulator & gauge. They look like normal air compressor parts, and I'm not sure if they would work the same underwater. They are built with the assumption that they will be in 1atm of pressure. Ten feet would be closer to 1.3 atm, and that could affect their operation. Overall, it's a cool build, and something that will provide you with a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing it.
@randomn64734 жыл бұрын
Hey there! I appreciate your kindness in responding. I was nervous about divers blasting the safety of this project, which is why I went into such great extent to assure the safety of operation! XD (Plus, I don't exactly want to hurt myself using this) I agree with your remark about the air compressor regulator. It's probable that the water pressure will either increase or decrease the amount of actual pressure coming through the system, but my thinking is that it wont be a substantial enough amount to change anything. I did some testing before doing those two timed dives and I didn't observe any issues with breathing at all. Hopefully I won't experience any in the future, but I guess time will tell! Thanks for the comment!!

Marie Curie didn't know that radioactivity is dangerous, and that time, nobody knew. Should you get some radium and reinvent the wheel? I bet your answer is a big NO. What the reason to reinvent the scuba gear? "Jacques Cousteau did it" is a silly excuse. He did many horrible things because nobody knew what is the danger in it.
@dennisolsson31194 жыл бұрын
@@complicatedmechanics9599 (This might be a little salty and is more a reply to people having what I projected this mindset to be rather than to you personally.) The "re-invent the wheel" argument is growing old. There is a reason we're not rolling things on logs, nor using stone wheels, nor wooden wheels, nor iron wheels any more. The wheel is /literally/ being re-invented all the time. In the spirit of your answer: Why would anyone ever go sight seeing? It's just re-visiting already visited places, and the traveling includes a risk of getting harmed... In my eyes this was not "I'm doing this as a product and forcing children to use it!", but he let us join him in exploration of a, for him, new field and got to see him prove that it could be done with limited gear, time and money. As for safety, it is my duty to put on PPE or avoid doing things when I think it can be dangerous -- not yours. For young children it might be the parents, but I don't think he and you falls into that category. @Randomonium : Thank you for the video!

@@randomn6473 I think, as long as you keep your equipment clean, it will be relatively safe for emergency use... As a rescue diver I'd like to express concern mostly about "regular" diving risks, more than risks from the equipment. You bought the final stage, and as long as you manage to deliver air pressure within its inlet specs, you'll be safe pressure-wise. The thought about the regulators and gauges is absolutely correct: they use their atmosphere and will respond in relation to that. But the tank gage will be wrong towards the safe side: it will indicate a lower pressure than it actually has. The adjustable is the risky one: always keep in mind you're setting more pressure than is indicated... I am a bit concerned about your reasoning for the oil and water separation. There are more reasons to remove oil and water than just mucking up the works. Oil will always vaporize and aerosol to some extent. And adding water can make it much riskier. The water and oil separator is not rated for breathing purposes and will most likely not be able to filter out vapors and the smallest aerosol particles. There will always be a small amount going through. Breathing air under pressure changes the composition ratio, and adding humidity and oil to the equation makes it only more complicated and more risky... But I'm not blasting you in any way. You approached it in a very smart way, and it's a workable emergency device! Service that filter every time you can. And flush the tank too by completely filling it up with water, then completely drying it out (vacuum chamber, oven,...). All little bits of extra precautions will make it only safer for you :)) Try to get your hands on a copy of the US Navy Diving Manual. It is the basis of most professional diving schools and CMAS (the real scuba organisation, as opposed to tourist entertaining PADI) is applying the exact same theory. I saw two actual serious risks in your test dives. 1, especially on the second, deeper dive, you didn't exhale all the way up. Overpressure in the lungs can be lethal from 3 feet depth. (so breathing all the way in from a tank on the bottom of a shallow swimming pool, then holding your breath and standing up, will land you in hospital, if not in the morgue) The second one is location and season dependent: the thermocline. Do not underestimate hypothermia and the effects of sudden temperature drop. You can't see it coming, and since you're diving in shorts, you'll get the full hit without delay. This kills people every summer, even just swimmers who decided to jump off a 5 foot rock, or wanted to pick up that shiny pebble on the bottom of that crystal clear lake... Last thought on having such an emergency tank: refresh the air every 3-6 months, flush it at least once a year. Have it handy in your car and you may save somebody's life one day!! Conclusion: good job and clearly objective reached!! Now get some education/training and most of all: don't get cocky! Diving is serious shit and if something goes wrong, there's no immediate exit. As a rescue diver I've seen some nasty accidents and dredged up a bunch of corpses... Don't become one of my colleagues' nightmares please... =)

"Certified Diver" does not mean much. I was SSI certified at 12. I can tell you you have a better understanding of the equipment than a lot of divers. As a licensed engineer (mechanical/control systems), the only real safety concern I see with the physical setup presented is that you have to make sure there is a relief that is actually sized for the pressure and flow that your 1st stage regulator can deliver(which is dictated by the cross sectional area of regulator valve port). I saw you point out the post primary relief, but you stated it was designed to keep the pressure under 300 at full flow. Most relief system designs allow for a certain percentage over pressure under the assumption there are safety factors on downstream components. This means it would probably hold the pressure around 330 PSIG if I had to guess. If this were a commercial product, that would be addressed and tested. Drying the air prior to being introduced to the system is also something that really aught to be done. If not cleaned and dried regularly, water will cause corrosion of the various components and could cause them to seize/ break. Imagine the spring you swapped breaking at depth because of corrosion. The Inline drier is unlikely to be able to handle more than one or two uses before saturating. The more significant dangers (and the ones better discussed during certification) of diving have more to do with the effects of pressure while diving. I would have made the disclaimers more about the dangers of just being under water and the importance of the buddy system. You did a good job with this project and video, just being the devils advocate.

What's the big deal with these devices if you stay above 20 ft and exhale on your way up if you run it out of air? Ok, I did not think about the pressure of that little tank being far more than our tanks, that is a definite concern but he dealt with it. Also, the fact he said 20 ft also makes me think he has done his homework. 30 is the real number but 20 to give's a nice buffer in case there is a problem. That's why I said 20 before watching the video. I do want to be clear that taking in a breath underwater and going to the surface while holding your breath can hurt or kill you. The air will expand so you want to exhale all the way to the top. That's why you never hold your breath when diving. To be clear, I am not an expert only a diver with a handful of certifications none of which qualify me for anything but recreation.

The pump you are using do you know if there is a certain type of air that is going into the tank. Basically what I’m asking is if memory serves me correct I’m thinking what they fill with at five shops is oxygen and roughly 20 percent of maybe nitrogen. Ask a dive shop to get the correct type of air that fills a dive tank. If the pump you are using is basic bicycle pump you’re getting bad air. Dive shops should be able to tell you the correct mixture of air. Exclaimed from me is I haven’t been diving since the early eighties. So yes, I could be absolutely wrong. Just think you should a 100% sure of your air you’re breathing. It could harm you at some point not only in the water but later down the road. Just my opinion and thought. It’s cool what you’ve come up with for shallow diving.

So my take on this is.. Though at this point, you in particular are advanced enough to ask all the right question how to make safe scuba system, and clearly the the Certified Diver is smart enough to find the basic flaws... but boy oh boy is this project so full of dangerous ideals... Personally I feel like pneumatic is some really whacked shit, and every time I hear about how people used to die because of a boiler explosion.. I think back to how I had one of those tipperman tanks blow a disk on me because it got over filled... That sucked. it was just after we left the air fill a dick sporting goods store it happened.... Personally as smart as the idea looks, I am really worried about the quality of those paintball parts... and I would Never ever have those fill to beyond there safe limit... Sure if it bursts, when in normal use, all that happens is the safety disk bursts... but that is above water.. below water is going to be far worse since now there pressure keeping the air from escaping.. Depending on how much pressure is involved.. It could be bubbles escaping from your tank.. or your tank turning itself into a unbalanced air jet..... and having a small unbalanced air jet hanging from a regulator in your mouth is going to suck donkey balls. Personally, I like to see some kind of safety cage around the air regulator to prevent damage to entire air system should it bump anything. I would also make sure to check the air tanks expiration date.. air tanks that are out of date should be treated like bombs waiting to go off No matter what.. but aside from that you did a great job, and Love to see more pneumatic projects.

There are different types of 1st stages out there (piston vs diaphragm), so you can't really make an informed decision on what to buy for your own use without knowing how it works. Therefore, most enthusiastic divers know the ins and outs of how regulators work. And like Rando said, he was just getting the divers opinion on it, not getting him to sign off on it in terms of safety, nor to suggest that he even use it.

I don't think you can get bends in two feet of water. The consensus is about 15 feet and below is when you need legitimate diving equipment. Snorkeling is generally done from 5-10 feet, and that requires you to go up and down quite a bit. 15 feet is also one of the major decompression stages when you leave the water after diving - as in, you are supposed to stay at that depth for a period of time before surfacing. So, that is generally a safe depth for diving and surfacing.
