What are you talking about? The SSD was one of the few parts that needed to be ordered specifically because the connector was so rare. And yeah, it's not special being able to hook up a rechargeable battery to a device that originally had a rechargeable battery. Ill-informed comment.

ZIF tape connections are also heavily used in the design of the iPod range of portable media players, not just for the hard drive but also for other connections from the main circuit board. Three types of ZIF connectors are known to exist on 1.8 inch PATA drives. ZIF-24, ZIF-40, and ZIF-50 have 24, 40, and 50 pins respectively." Ill informed malevolent reply to non malevolent comment.

@@FeralRabbit Just because a three-prong plug is common for hooking up electrical devices to wall sockets doesn't mean you usually find the same three-prong plug on a motherboard. Solder is pretty common, too. That doesn't mean most companies releasing SSDs or HDDs ship them with a few exposed wires and expect users to solder them to the mobo, either.

@@AttackOnTyler The interface they created with the Zune HD that wound up becoming the Windows Phone interface was just so cool too. Going to be doing these upgrades. Just ordered a new SSD, 3000mah battery, and the wireless charging. Now if only I could source a new screen as mine has gotten a little beaten up over the years. Still glad to have this little piece of nostalgia, and the upgrade from 30gb to 128gb is going to be a game changer. I didn't have an mp3 player until I was 20 or so. In 2004 I worked a summer job painting and mowing lawns, and I only had an old Nokia phone with 32 MB of storage. It held like 7 songs which I was too lazy to replace, so I played the same songs every day at work for a month. Forty Foot Echo and Breaking Benjamin were my selected artists, and I never grew tired of them, still haven't. A few years later I bought an Ipod Nano with 8 GB of storage, a revolutionary upgrade compared to the old Nokia. Ended up buying an adapter cable for the CD player in my car, so the iPod could be used there instead when my phone took over as a music device on the go.

This was a lot of fun to watch! I love seeing old tech upgraded and made useful again! My MP3 contant companion was the OG mass-market MP3 player, the Diamond Rio PMP300 that I got in 1998. It had 32MB (yes, you read that right) of onboard memory that was good for about 8-10 songs at 128kbps, and the single AA battery lasted maybe 8-10 hours? I loved that thing and carried it daily for years! It did have expandable storage through a SmartMedia slot (precursor to SD cards), and I did eventually add a 64MB card. It also had a TERRIBLE battery flap design where the only thing that phsically connected the battery flap to the rest of the device was the soldered joint that also connected the battery. It broke regularly and I had to dissasmble and re-solder it every few months. I finally replaced my Rio when I got my Sony Clié PDA in 2003. It was the end of era - the Rio was the only dedicated MP3 player I owned.

Ah, a fellow PMP300 user! I still have two of them, the original black one, and the special edition 64MB translucent green version! I have a question for you... have you tried any bigger smartmedia cards in it? I know they made bigger sizes than 64MB (I want to say I've seen them up to 128, maybe 256 MB), d you think those bigger cards would work too? I've been wanting to mess with them again and upgrade the storage but don't want to waste my money on rare cards if they won't work.
@SpencerN.C.
@SpencerN.C. Жыл бұрын
@@FinalManaTrigger I used to lust over the special edition one! Especially before I got the SmartMedia card. Sadly I never got a chance to try a bigger card - by the time I could have afforded a 128MB, I had switched to MemoryStick for my Sony Clié. By that point, the battery door was so battered from dozens of repairs, that I scrapped the poor thing alltogether.

Instead of running a Zune or another competing MP3 player, I always had my trusty PSP. the audio didn't get as loud as an iPod or Zune, etc. but, I had a media powerhouse on my hand. I'd just use Winamp's autofill back in the day and use up any remaining space I wasn't using for games. What a great video! I'd seen Zune, etc., storage drive swaps before, but your solution for the Qi charging and particularly the BT antenna were absolutely ingenious! I can see why you chose the early Zune 30 GB devices rather than the more popular Zune 80, given the tight fit; I'm a bit sad I sold mine to fund a custom-engraved Zune HD (which I still have, and works as a incredibly compact and intuitive MP3 player, though its file form support is limited). It was definitely never as popular as the iPod, but I do remember Zunes became the second most popular PMD/PMP brand, ousting Creative, but that was no doubt due to the general culling of the device market sadly (with D-Link, Archos, etc., gradually leaving, alongside Microsoft and Apple); it does seem like Creative is the last surviving inexpensive mass-market PMP manufacturer (their devices seem far more popular than Sony and the more high-end manufacturers putting out players that cost as much, or more, than smart phones), giving them the last laugh.

USB C would be such a great addition. I thought about trying to make one of the adapters that converts the 24-pin to type-c.

I used to have a 30GB in high school before my mom got me the 120GB. I was able to rip a bunch of DVDs and put them in the device. My friends would get jealous of the huge display (at the time).

Back in the day my favorite media player was a 3000 model Sony PSP. Games, music videos, music, could use it as a picture viewer when I swapped in a memory card from my Sony digital camera. AND I had the video output cord to use it with a tv. Loved it.

The media player I had the holds the biggest place in my heart might surprise you. I had a Nintendo DS lite with an R4 flashcart. The DS was completely custom with a clear plastic shell replacement. It played games, music, and movies, all drag and drop (provided they were in the right format). I used it as my main media player through high school and college. Always envied the Zune though, yours looks amazing now! Fantastic job.

I miss my old Creative MuVo TX. It was so innovative how the mp3 player itself was a USB stick and you plugged it into a battery compartment to use portable. Nothing ever compared to that awesome little device for me. I miss it dearly.

Back in iPod era I already used my phone(s) as my MP3 player. I had Sony W310i (~2003 to 2006) and later Sony W910i (~2006 to 2009) music phones. I was ahead of time I guess lol.

Protip! A lot of electronics can be run on lower voltage than they 'ask' for. Sometimes they can be wonky, but a lot of times it's worth testing. You may not even need that 5V regulator. And even if it seems like you do, check the actual working voltage of the chips in the BT transmitter; they may step it right back down to 3.3v! Finally, I would be surprised if the had drive or screen didn't already draw 5V at some point; there may already be places you could tap some 5V power from without the separate board. Besides that, this looks like a great mod! Makes me want to get a Zune.
