I am impressed at the dedication to preserving the 30pin connector - as someone who still uses the largest 30pin peripheral ever: the 2006 MIni Cooper (not only is there a 30pin connector in the glovebox, but this generation of ipods recognizes it in the firmware :-) (I've never done anything more advanced to the ipod than battery swaps myself...)

Incredible is all I have to say. The idea of having an iPod classic like this one and being able to listen to all your favorite old tunes on your existing wireless headphones is too exciting to even think about. Not to mention coming back home after a long day and tossing the iPod on your wireless charging station… simply beautiful

That iPod looks absolutely incredible! I love the wireless charging! You have inspired me sir! Whether I win or not, I plan to do the following mods… I have two 5th gen iPods and I plan to do the Bluetooth mod, the transparent case, transparent click wheel, new battery, new screen, and after seeing how well your iPod came out, I also would like to attempt to add wireless charging and I will paint the battery and the frame as well. For the second 5th gen iPod I plan to replace the case with a new one that retains the original look. I will of course upgrade the battery, add Bluetooth, and replace the screen and click wheel. I also have an iPod Hi-Fi and a 20” iMac G4 that I would love to pair these iPods up with! Thanks for the great video, I’m looking forward to seeing your future projects!

The main mods I plan to do with the board from my 7th gen lying around would be to make an ipod that has a nice colour scheme (maybe black front plate with a yellow clickwheel) with a huge battery and storage size. I understand why iFlash boards are so useful but I find the HDDs fun too. The little noise they make and the feeling of movement in them really differenciates them from other MP3 players of the time. Anyway, very fun video, I really like the wireless charging aspect especially. Means you could realistically have a wireless charger in your bag to charge all your devices!

Always loved the classic design, even when it wasn’t the classic. My 80gig is in use everyday and never seems to fail. The battery is far from great but it lives in its dock so this doesn’t matter. Its 120GB sibling has had a bad harddrive for years and is just begging to have modifications like this. After-all 120gb is so small these days :)

Someone should make a wireless charging case for the iPod 5.5 and the final 7th gen. It would have a 3,000mAh battery built into it along with the Qi wireless coil and a Bluetooth module. A case like this would add around 15mm to the bottom and around 15mm to the top of the iPod to account for the 30-pin plug at the bottom and the electronics for the Bluetooth module plugged into the 3.5mm jack at the top of the iPod - and maybe 2-3mm on each side... It would be a great option for the folks who want to breathe more life into their old iPod but aren't brave enough to do the SSD and battery mods us geeky folk have done, and it also adds the functionality of Qi and BT...

Have started to refurbish/enhance my iPod by adding a SSD, new battery and a new front/back cover. Also, I started looking for iPod docking stations and also couldn’t find my 30-pin cable. I have 4 docking stations, two installed on two tube amps and two spare, but the ones I found on eBay and AliExpress are EXPENSIVE. I bought mine for a few bucks each while the ones I found was like $30~40. Also I found a cable in a local phone shop - $40😱😱😱😱😱 Got one on-line, but still $10.

Thanks for the kind words! I’ve also attempted wireless charging on the 7th generation iPod. Unfortunately it doesn’t appear to be possible without some additional hardware, as the 7th Gen seems to check for signal data on the data pins before it will initiate charging, unlike the 5th generation which will just charge as soon as it gets 5v.

This is spectacular! I'd love to try scuffing the transparent back to give it a "frosted" look, and somehow sourcing a bondi blue faceplate - I think I could print one, but you're absolutely right that PLA can look a bit cheap. Do you think an iflash quad could be cut down for this? I know that if you use that, you can squeeze the 3000mah battery in with a thin back, I wonder if it would be possible to cram that, and the bluetooth module in (I assume the wireless coil is of negligible thickness?)

I haven’t attempted this yet, but I do repairs on various household, electronics, antique, and modern. I can tell you that the type of soldering involved in this is not at all a beginner level. Good solder joints on a standard circuit board like in a VCR take a bit of practice to learn. Micro soldering ribbon cables, and up against plastic shields in an iPod are going to be advanced level of soldering. As long as that charger outputs the standard 5V a USB charger would, then it should be OK.

Im watching it quite a bit after upload as you can see, however, few questions: Why you have not added magsafe magnets neither round qi pad? Why you have not installed a bluetooth chip itself but a full board? Why you have not pulled audio signal out of 30-pin connector? And last one - why you havent used some different BT board like 30-pin accessory, so you would have AVRCP to control iPod remotely? As of the look, not my style, I'd paint that case from inside with some either silver or matte black paint while keeping OEM front. However, you've motivated me to do something what i wanted to do for a long time, to modify one of my iPods!

I’ve been wanting to start making these kinds of mods for a while, but I don’t even have any equipment yet. I’d like to find an easy first project where I can learn how to do several things and build confidence to try bigger projects like this one.

Great Mod. I am planning a USB-C connector in my 3rd gen with an internal 12V step up converter.
