I wrote about the Zune HD in a college paper and I mentioned how the marketing was poor for the product as well. The simple Ads and graphics from Apple were so iconic. Microsoft Ads were not catching people's attention.
@MarcosElMalo24 жыл бұрын
MS consumer product marketing at that time was always atrocious and confusing, from advertising to packaging. Yet they had one stellar success, the XBox. At the time nobody thought they could pull it off vs Sony, but look where it is today. What was different about the development and marketing of XBox? Two things I can think of right off the bat was that 1) MS spread a lot of money around among game developers to make sure Xbox had sufficient titles at launch (including their outright purchase of Mac game developer Bungie, giving them an exclusive on Halo), and 2) Xbox was basically walled off from the company, allowing it to do its own thing (much like how the Mac was initially developed at Apple).

It was a pretty sweet deal while it lasted. They eventually rolled it into the "Xbox Music Pass" and later, Groove. We who had the original Pass were grandfathered in with the "10 free mp3s a month" deal for several years, but eventually they forced everyone into the $10-for-only-streaming" deal with Groove. I wasn't interested in streaming (for practical reasons), so I ended my subscription then. Just a few months later, Groove was killed off as a subscription service, with MS promoting Spotify in its stead.

Later Zune models even had a radio feature that would read the RDS data from FM stations and would provide links to purchase songs you hear on the radio... granted if your favorite station has RDS data in their signal. Not every station has RDS, especially smaller independent community stations or in rural areas. As for HD Radio, it could make FM radio more appealing to many if stations dropped analog signals completely. That would greatly increase digital bandwidth and in turn, audio quality.

It got upgraded to Win10 Mobile at some point, but conveniently you could roll-back to 8.1 whenever you pleased by doing a factory reset. And I did it when I gave the phone to my father to make it more simple (he never had a smartphone prior to that one so I didn't want to overwhelm him). And yes, that's a very pleasant and uncluttered interface. Shame that Windows Phones never took off.

I loved my Zunes. I got into the line with the second generation -- I got an 80 GB model first, then picked up a 4 GB flash player a little later. When the Zune HD came out, I was one of the first to buy. And I absolutely loved it! The audio quality was (and is) amazing, and that OLED screen was almost a decade ahead of its time. And beginning with the 2nd generation Zune device software, the user interface was extremely well designed. It truly made the iPods look and sound absolutely ancient (aside from the app issue). I have my 80 GB Zune connected in my video production trailer as a music player. It still does a far better job as a music player than my iPhone or iPads, both in terms of sound quality and usability. And having a real headphone jack sure makes my job much easier when I need to connect a player into a real set of headphones or an audio mixer. You missed one of the best parts of the Zune ecosystem, though: the Zune desktop software. It was, and still is, absolutely fantastic! Especially compared to the abomination that is iTunes. It's possibly the best-designed and implemented user interface I've ever seen in any software on any platform. It's still my main music player software to this day because nothing better has come along. The streaming and music purchasing features no longer work, but for anyone who has a library of music that they've purchased, the Zune software is without question the best option out there, even today.

Agree with you. The animations to this day are unique. That flying tiles were so soothing to watch. I wish MS can just make it open source. I would buy an android phone with same exact animations and interface. I just wish MS had developed android phones with windows phone like skinned version of android like other manufacturers do. But alas they won't do it. MS has been unlucky when it comes to get the fame for innovation just cause they are just too ahead of time in most cases.

@ yes but it not the same as whole experience. I don't want to see fonts used in android. I don't that settings UI. App drawer?Anybody remember that was the best app drawer you could ever have. Still no launcher is available with that kind of app drawer. Rumours are iOS 14 is going to have app drawer I bet people will go gaga over 80% similar app drawer just cause it was released by apple.

I had a Windows phone. There were just zero useful apps at the time and I didn't like that reports showed it was sending all of your personal data to Microsoft.

I’m gonna level with you, chief. I had a zune 80 back in the day. And I loved it. The streaming service was great and i got a lot of mileage out of it. It’s been a decade and I’m still salty my device got stolen.

The first iPod was compatible with windows. iTunes was already on windows by that point.
