I stuck with my crappy Lumia phone until like late 2018. By then the apps had started to disappear but the UI was simply a saving grace in the shitshow that was Windows Phone. I'm quite certain the same kind of problems were present in WP as what was mentioned in the video, somehow Microsoft just didn't allow the developers to do certain stuff. Even something as simple as a properly working real-time clock on the start screen was very difficult to find.

MS consumer product marketing at that time was always atrocious and confusing, from advertising to packaging. Yet they had one stellar success, the XBox. At the time nobody thought they could pull it off vs Sony, but look where it is today. What was different about the development and marketing of XBox? Two things I can think of right off the bat was that 1) MS spread a lot of money around among game developers to make sure Xbox had sufficient titles at launch (including their outright purchase of Mac game developer Bungie, giving them an exclusive on Halo), and 2) Xbox was basically walled off from the company, allowing it to do its own thing (much like how the Mac was initially developed at Apple).

It was a pretty sweet deal while it lasted. They eventually rolled it into the "Xbox Music Pass" and later, Groove. We who had the original Pass were grandfathered in with the "10 free mp3s a month" deal for several years, but eventually they forced everyone into the $10-for-only-streaming" deal with Groove. I wasn't interested in streaming (for practical reasons), so I ended my subscription then. Just a few months later, Groove was killed off as a subscription service, with MS promoting Spotify in its stead.

Later Zune models even had a radio feature that would read the RDS data from FM stations and would provide links to purchase songs you hear on the radio... granted if your favorite station has RDS data in their signal. Not every station has RDS, especially smaller independent community stations or in rural areas. As for HD Radio, it could make FM radio more appealing to many if stations dropped analog signals completely. That would greatly increase digital bandwidth and in turn, audio quality.

I had a Zune 80GB. It was awesome. I left it in my car glove compartment on a cloudy day under a tree for like 4 hours - like I did everyday for like a year. Then it didn't turn back on. I live in the Philippines and support is nonexistent or expensive. Same thing happened as this video's Zune Flash. I bought an aftermarket battery, had an electronics repair guy replace the battery. Didn't turn on. So my zune officially died then. That product was the product that swore me off from buying niche, rare, little no support devices. I hate buying mainstream, but sometimes you just have to get something common but reliable.

It got upgraded to Win10 Mobile at some point, but conveniently you could roll-back to 8.1 whenever you pleased by doing a factory reset. And I did it when I gave the phone to my father to make it more simple (he never had a smartphone prior to that one so I didn't want to overwhelm him). And yes, that's a very pleasant and uncluttered interface. Shame that Windows Phones never took off.

@Martin Evans Maybe. In retrospective I can only compare my experience with that of my I-pod friends, who constantly struggled with their I-tunes library, whilst I was watching videos on my Zen, listened to radio, checked the calendar and made voice recordings of meetings. But History teaches us everyone was wrong and I-pods were a commercial success. Lets leave it at that.

I don't recall my Zen having radio support, but I do recall the moment they released wanting one, and then getting one, right before they released the 60gb version. I was never so annoyed. Especially since it was only a few dollars more. The best part of the Zen, like you said, was music management. It was literally just drag and drop. As long as I had the ID info correct, everything worked out flawlessly. Unfortunately, mine took a fall onto some rough asphalt and the soft aluminum trim dented in, pushing up the face panel and forever destroying the touch navigation bar. After that, I was gifted an iPod which felt like stepping backwards. And then I got a Zune (and eventually a Zune HD).

IMHO I found them annoying as HELL seeing them so often on TV during saturday college football, and wrestling. Made me not want to get an iPod, and I never did except the 1GB Shuffle I salvaged from the trash after my late stepdad threw his in the trash after getting frustrated with it, and then a week later I sold it on eBay for $35 to help fund the purchase of a Sandisk Sansa C250 I stuck a 16GB MicroSD card into, and put RockBox on it.

I think the Apple marketing was also a contributing factor to the success of the iPod and the demise of the competition. Apple still has a strong relation with TBWA/Chiat/Day who is perhaps most remembered for the Apple Super Bowl ad “1984”

The sad thing for me is that I just now learned about Zune and how good the Zune HD was despite its failure. I wasn't familiar with the term "Flat UI" so I did some research. It seems the main issue with a Flat UI is the need to make sure that it is obvious where you are supposed to click on the screen. On some Flat UI screens it is unclear where you are supposed to click.

I loved my Zunes. I got into the line with the second generation -- I got an 80 GB model first, then picked up a 4 GB flash player a little later. When the Zune HD came out, I was one of the first to buy. And I absolutely loved it! The audio quality was (and is) amazing, and that OLED screen was almost a decade ahead of its time. And beginning with the 2nd generation Zune device software, the user interface was extremely well designed. It truly made the iPods look and sound absolutely ancient (aside from the app issue). I have my 80 GB Zune connected in my video production trailer as a music player. It still does a far better job as a music player than my iPhone or iPads, both in terms of sound quality and usability. And having a real headphone jack sure makes my job much easier when I need to connect a player into a real set of headphones or an audio mixer. You missed one of the best parts of the Zune ecosystem, though: the Zune desktop software. It was, and still is, absolutely fantastic! Especially compared to the abomination that is iTunes. It's possibly the best-designed and implemented user interface I've ever seen in any software on any platform. It's still my main music player software to this day because nothing better has come along. The streaming and music purchasing features no longer work, but for anyone who has a library of music that they've purchased, the Zune software is without question the best option out there, even today.
