Just though I'd share a little video showing how I catch most the creatures in my tank, so I filmed a couple of days on the ocean showing some of the creatures I typically can get.
Hope you'll enjoy the video!

In Canada, MNR and MOE have made restictions on not only what you can eat, but also what you can bring home as pets. Your disposition to saving, learning ecology and preservation is refreshing. There are people not so ethical which is why I believe that our rules/laws are there. Best regards to Norway!

I see. I thought it was allowed there tbh.. Is that something new? Is nothing local from the ocean allowed to keep? There are very few people keeping local fish/inverts in aquariums here for some reason, which I'm sure is why there's no regulations (other then the obvious to stay away from protected species). I've learned so much about the local fauna keeping these tanks, which is a big part of the fun for me at least. Thanks for you feedback! Much appreciated! 🙂

Far too frequently does fish and wildlife intrude into matters they shouldn't be involved in. The people who make these laws probably don't even know that private keeping of local wildlife is not only possible, but quite easy and accessible. It's a shame too, because incorporating local wildlife into people's daily lives is pretty much the best way to promote conservation. It makes the masses aware of the beautiful wildlife that they never knew they had, and makes them appreciate even the small but very important things that aren't usually noticed. Awareness is the best method of conservation. The governments however are often lazy, and sacrifice this out of ignorance while making their laws. For example, to stop people from illegal stocking, some governments outlaw not just the illegal stocking, but the mere transport of live native fish. Trading the peoples freedoms for more efficient regulation is not okay. Outlaw the crime, not the means to do it.

What's the not so ethical way? Because I love animals and some people thought I was a animal abuser because of a photo I forgot to remove from my clump of fish photos

Wow, having a boat is great. And those traps gather cool stuff from deeper water. Ever considered to collect stuff snorkeling? That's where I explore most of the underwater world and also gather lots of stuff for my tank.

@@blackseaandothers Sorry, never got notified about this comment... If I lived in Portugal, I'd be snorkeling too. 😄 Not as nice to do in Norway, hehe, even though many do... I'm not a fan of cold water! I'd love to be able to get some nice macro algae from deeper than the tidal zone, so then snorkeling would be perfect. Maybe I'll try it one day!

@@ColdwaterTanks Since you don't like cold water Norway is just the place for you... Sometimes fishermen with nets bring up such interesting stuff from deeper waters. If there are still such traditional fishermen... In Greece I found such a port and got that beautiful sponge with the zoanthids on it from there.
@ColdwaterTanks
@ColdwaterTanks Жыл бұрын
@@blackseaandothers Hehe, yeah... 😄 True, there can be some interesting stuff coming up with nets, but often it's broken/ripped off rocks etc. Traps like I use are good for getting creatures, but not really for macro algae, sponges and such, for the same reason. That's when diving/snorkeling is the way to go I think..

Hey Simon, great video! I was wondering, what's the purpose of keeping unbaited traps in the water?
@ColdwaterTanks
@ColdwaterTanks 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I usually put the traps in the ocean a little before the season starts, but then unbaited. I have a small boat, and don't have too much space, so getting the traps in the ocean takes a few days.. Then a couple of days before the season, I go over and bait everything.

How do you get your specimens back home safely? Is there a need to cool and oxygenate the water between catching them on the boat and getting them into an aquarium?
@ColdwaterTanks
@ColdwaterTanks 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. Nothing complicated.. It depends on the time of year tbh.. If there's many hours between catching them and the time I get home (I go home every day..), I just change out some of the water in the bucket. (Also I do make sure the temp in the bucket and the aquarium is about the same before adding anything.) No need to oxygenate, as I don't bring as many creatures at once as I had in the bucket in this video. That was just to show what I can get on a string of crab traps. I usually just bring small shrimp to use as food, and once in a while I find a creature I want to add to the tank..

Did you get a boating license for this and how do you get that type of boat
@ColdwaterTanks
@ColdwaterTanks Жыл бұрын
I'm a crab fisherman here in Norway, so I do have a fishing licence (sort of..). It's something everyone here can do, if they buy a boat that's considered good/safe enough to use for it. Boat has to be approved and registered in advance.
