How I choose colors for my Mosaic Crochet - Creating Gradient and Ombre effects with yarn you have

In this video I will take you through my color selection process and the way I plan and lay put my yarns before starting a mosaic. I will be showing several sets of color choices. I filmed this by just pulling out a bunch of yarn and grabbed colors that caught my eye.

This video was done by request and is hopefully helpful for many. Keep in mind I'm speaking in this video as if you are familiar with the technique and also working on a large project like a blanket. You can use this info on smaller projects as well!
Color A and Color B can be any color you like and you never have to just pick one. in this video I'm picking a series of colors that will be used as either A or B in a project. you can have multiple colors for color A and choose just one or two for Color B or vice versa.
In my tutorials I have to show two colors for the purpose of teaching but your projects can consist of a large spectrum of colors and scraps you have on hand.

Definately can use the color wheel!!! Since we moved I've not been able to find mine! I wanted to pull it out and show that too so hopefully we can locate it in out little tiny storage loft. I'm thinking it might be up there. Fingers crossed! BECAUSE the only other place it could be means its buried behind my yarn lol

“It’s almost impossible to make an ugly mosaic.” I am actually making an ugly mosaic right now! LOL! I started making a Havana blanket last month before I found your mosaic series. I had ordered a lot of mustard colored yarn for another project and then changed my mind about making it. So I’ve been using the mustard as color A and using a different color for B in each section, splitting some of the sections into three colors. I was trying to go with rich colors but then somehow I got off track. There are a couple of colors I probably should have pulled out but didn’t. Anyway, when I finish I’ll try to see if I can send you a photo, but it IS ugly! LOL Thank you for this informative video! I’ve always told my kids “live and learn” so hopefully my next mosaic will look better! 😊

This is super helpful. Do you have any tips for changing the colour scheme of designs like granny square/Persian tile blankets? The colour patterns can be more complex than just gradients, so I find it harder to visualise

I'm going to brainstorm and come up with a way to answer that. I'll do a video with some examples too to help show it visually for ya! I know I can say that I always start with picking a color I love at that moment and then build out from there. I know exactly what you mean, it's not a gradient usually when doing a granny square or the Persian tiles so it's a different concept than what I'm showing here. Great question and I'll try to do something next week on it!

Really good video. It helped me conceptualize how to choose color combinations. If you answered this in another video, sorry to ask again, but is a mosaic fabric heavier/more dense because it's kind of a double layer of fabric? I actually am looking for a way to make a fabric that is heavier than normal for a shawlette (?), but want it to still has movement. And in general do you use more yarn overall when doing a mosaic pattern, than say, a blanket in double crochet?

It does create a more dense fabric because there are no holes or gaps in the stitchwork but I wouldn't necessarily say its a thicker fabric. I don't find myself using more yarn, just typically more of one color than another depending on the design i am using. I can say that a mosaic design like my pattern 18 uses more yarn than normal because it has a lot of DC's in it.. Tunisian Crochet creates a thicker density fabric and uses more yarn, it can still have movement as well. I have heard of mosaic Tunisian but haven't explored it yet. That may be something to look into for your Shawlette as it sounds like more what you are wanting.
