I think you made a good choice with Jackson/Jack, but I actually like your whole selection! Except for Bill haha. When I was around five, I wanted to be named Tracy for some reason. I'm not sure where I got that from since it's definitely not a common name for the year I was born, and now it's pretty cringey. I also had a while that I wanted to be named Elizabeth because I thought it'd be cool to have a name that lent itself to a lot of nickname options. I'm happy with my name (Julia) now though.

I'm a cis gal and I've always hated my first name. So at the end of high school I had to make a choice about who I was going to be in college, and just went by my last name, Reynolds. The problem is, people make a lot of weird assumptions when a girl goes by a last name. People assumed I was in the military a lot, for one. But now it's totally natural and my mom advocates for me at family events, enforcing the name change with aunties who may be less understanding. If I ever get married, my plan is just to ditch my first name, move my maiden name to be my official first name, and start fresh!

I chose Noah because, I'm not kidding, it's easier for baristas at Starbucks to hear and understand. My deadname is unisex and easily confused with other names. Noah is (typically) male, and my idea was that baristas and people who heard my name wouldn't misgender me. You'd be surprised at how many people misgender others even with a binary name. my name is Noah Samuel, which ties back to by Christian roots, and my parents like that. It was a bit easier when I told them I picked Noah bc it was my favorite Bible story, but the truth is a little different

So cool to hear more about the name choosing process! I feel like you picked the perfect name for you. Here's a weird fun story about nicknames! I hate when people call me Laur. Weird people I'm not even close with have called me that my whole life and it has always irked me for some reason. But when I was in middle school, I tested out the nickname Ren. It felt less feminine and more weird and it was fun for a while. My dad called me that for like 5 years.

When you mentioned that many trans people try to choose names that were en vogue when they were born, my initial reaction was that it was because if you were tryna stay stealth, it would be kinda weird to have a name that was so far ahead of the times. Idk if that's right obviously but that's just what came to mind. Looking forward to your next video!
@jackisnotabird7 жыл бұрын
Yep! Stealth is exactly it. Sometimes I think I internalize stealth practices and forget why I think what I do. Recording this video was on instance of that. In the moment, I couldn't for the life of me remember why it can be a good idea to choose a name that was popular when you were born and when I was editing, I was like duh it's because being stealth used to basically be the only option.

I'm a non binary trans guy and when I first started choosing my name, I would go over lists of names and write down the ones that I liked. At first I considered the possibility of changing my name to the male version or gender neutral version of my birth name (Oliver/Ollie), but I knew multiple people with that name. Then I considered changing my name to Nick because my middle name is similar to it. I had been planning to change my name to Nick for a while, but then I came across the name Oz and it just felt right for some reason.
@seth52297 жыл бұрын
Oz Ercolino I use Ollie in real life because people are much more likely to assume that Ollie is olivia as opposed to Mikey or Seth. As it happened though I don't like the name Oliver or Ollie particularly and I know an Oliver who's called Ollie for short so that wouldn't work anyway. (I'm also a transmasculine nonbinary person)
@ozercolino76437 жыл бұрын
Seth Tuohy When I was looking for a name that I liked, what I did was just look through lists of names and write down ones that I liked. When I first came out, people asked me how I chose my name and the truth is I saw it on Tumblr because there are a bunch of blogs dedicated to helping trans people chose names. Before I came out though, I was depressed, so I really needed to come out, but I was also really anxious about it. One of the excuses for not coming out was that I didn't have a name yet, but in hindsight it probably would have been better to come out even if I hadn't fully decided on a name yet. But anyways, the reason I knew the name Oz was "right" was that I didn't have to force myself to take on that name, I just wanted to.

i've considered changing my name so much and it's so frustrating because i love my name but i cringe so much whenever people say "oh that's such a pretty name" or read me as male/androgynous (i'm nonbinary) then correct themselves after hearing my name. the name i nearly went with was ethan, because it's close to esmé in terms of initials and syllables and i didn't know anyone called ethan - then i found out there was a friend of a friend from school called ethan, and also the process of getting people to call me a different name seemed so daunting, and i do like my name... anyway, i had a hard time with "names popular when you were born" because i wanted something masculine (rather than strictly unisex) but not hyper-masculine (i'm not a brad or a dave or a bob), and i wanted it to be english rather than american (i live in england) and i wanted it to not sound like i'd named myself (so nothing too unusual or modern). it's also easy to spell - for some reason no one can get 'esmé (pronounced ez-may) right. anyway, i think jackson suits you way more than luke, but that could just be because i know you as jackson :P

What's super sad (in my case at least) was I didn't know being trans was a thing you could be until I was in late high school/early college, so I don;t really remember experimenting with boy names at all when I was growing up. I tried going by so many different girl names to see if I could find something comfortable and never was able to find anything that felt right, so I just settled with going by my birth name even though I didn't like it at all. Fast forward to now, and I'm definitely trans and definitely going to change my name, so I picked Noah. It's from one of my favorite books, and it also just felt like me. I'm currently having some doubts about the middle name I chose (Lane, which can be a little androgynous depending on who you ask), so I'm really looking forward to hearing your perspective about middle names in part 2!

I never really thought about male names for myself growing up, and my parents never considered other names for me before I was born, so I had some trouble coming up with any options when I tried to find a new one. I spent a frustratingly long while in "name limbo" until I got so fed up I went on a name database, and then I had the opposite problem. To many possibilities. So I created a shortlist of about a 100 names, sent copies to my parents (who have been really supportive and actually asked to be included in choosing my new name) to find the ones each of us liked best, which narrowed it down to 15, and from those I actually managed to find the right one. I've been going by Lorenz for almost half a year now, it's not official yet and won't be for a while, but I'm really happy with it.

I flip flopped around a lot with names, but I eventually landed on Toby (Tobias) and it fit. I couldn't find a middle name that fit for several years until I started messing around with different name ideas with a bunch of different characters from the Outsiders, and the name Cade just clicked.

Im thinking of going with elliot, purely bc ever since i was younger its been a name that i have loved and when asked for a male name i would always think 'oh elliot' and kinda just think about the name if somebody said mine and as to why this is i have absolutley no idea

im between naming myself cedric (after the sorcerer from sofia the first), ivo (after my birthname, and after dr robotnik/eggman) or sawyer (after one of my ocs whom i named after a character from pokemon xyz). i think im gonna go with ivo sawyer to preserve my initials though. plus, i can use ivo in spanish and german speaking spaces, and sawyer in english speaking ones :)

Interestingly enough, I'm transitioning currently (8 weeks on T now, and my facial hair is finally coming in!) and I've chosen to change my name to William because it came to me in a dream. I'm still using my old nickname (Mel) because it's unisex, but I'm also slowly trying to get people used to William for me.

Jackson definitely fits you and I love how it's a name your mom considered for you. I wouldn't be able to use 'my boy name', since my parents wanted to use the same boys name for me and my sisters and with the last girl, decided to name her the girl version :')

I'm such an oddball wrt my name, I'm trans, so I legally I've changed my name, but I also have DID, and since I was basically 'born' I've always ID'd as Alec, way before I ever came out. And when i figured out I was trans it fit so well with me, I never even had to consider other names. I liked other guys names before i came out, but they were never me, it's like I literally sprung fully formed from my brain, name and all.

this is soo wild to me, like the whole years long struggle to choose a name. i just searched for girl names that started with my given initial and picked the first one that stuck out to me & then i just swapped my middle name to a female varient. it took me one hour to choose a name & one week to get emotionally attached to it lol

I almost got name JaNese (juh-neese) after my aunt LaNese but I'm pretty sure I'dve been perpetually pissed with people calling me Janice my entire life. I dont think my parents came up with any boy names (or at least they dont talk about them) for me. I ended up being named after one of my moms high school drum majors. Pretty much everyone calls me by my deadname but if I had the chance to legally change mine, I'd change my name to Antony but I might change Nicole to Nickolas, I'm not sure about my middle name

thinking of names, i had gone through the "close to birthname" thing as well, so it revolved around emile, emilien , erin (this one lasted a long time too), but none of those worked so with my best friends we were looking and i was almost Teddy but luckily we saw Charles :')

One of my parents possible names for me was Rhiannon Ellis which I actually like way better than my actual name. I also like that I could play off the Rhiannon and go by Rhys which I guess doesn't actually correlate but it made sense in my head.

lol for me, I already went by Dawn online cause a long time ago i made a fan account for a character named Dawn, and i've been going by that for years online by then. When I really started to think about names, Dawn just stuck to me, so uh.... blame the show creators for why I'm Dawn rn also for right now, my middle name (still not 100%) is Marina. When i was being born, one of my names that my parents thought of if i was AFAB, was Ocean. While Ocean didn't stick, I looked for more aquatic related names and came to Marina and for right now I'm really liking it :)

I’m struggling with my name picking right now because my mom hates all the names on my possible name list and won’t call me the one that I really like (Jonah) or the nickname I have (BJ) just because it’s not close enough to the name she gave me. She won’t call me anything other than my birth name until I “find something better”

I chose my name because I always liked the name ever since I was a kid, probably because one of my favorite cartoon characters had this name (even now one of my favorite characters from a more recent show has this name). I still hadn't felt quite right because trying new names just feels weird for some reason so I headed over to the magic conch website, asked if i should use the name, and it said yes. I don't know if its entirely because I just like the characters who have my name but i definitely still like the name otherwise. other names just don't feel right

I also wanted to go for the name Link but I wanted to do it because of the Legend of Zelda series and when explaining to people why I choose my name I didn't want the weird judgemental looks them from so I decided not to go with that.

My dad didn't have any backup names for me, but I've hated my name almost my whole life. I'm not sure if I'm binary trans or genderfluid, but I'm starting to use Miles around friends and at work, even changed my preferred name at work for the upcoming year! It's probably not the name I'm going to use for the rest of my life, and I feel some shame in using it professionally, but I need to distance myself from my birth name for my own sanity, so it's a good middle ground.

I came up with Al for my animal crossing character, to abbreviate my birth name, before I even new I was trans. Then when I figured out I was trans, one of my first thoughts was, "what's Al short for... Alan!" and that was it. The more I thought about it, the better it got.

My nickname as a child was Chloe (which now is like absolute Hell- it feels almost as weird as my birth name) Then when I transitioned to Agen I kept my name which was already unisex. Now I'm Charlie (trans male) because it had a small link to Chloe, but I'm still not sure! Recently I've been thinking about the Jason... I've also called myself Travis in my head once??? Very confused, lol.

My process was: hey, except for spelling and an almost never practiced pronunciation difference, my name sounded like a guy name already. Aaron it is. And for my middle name...just something I've always liked. I write as an amateur, and had named one of my many characters my chosen middle name already. Easy as pie. Now, if only my last name weren't so boring. How did you get Bird as a last name? That sounds so cool!

I just wanna say I appreciate your videos so much Jackson! I’ve been watching lots of them lately, and it really helps me process and learning things. At first I was super uncertain and afraid of everything and just didnt know what to do. And then I found your channel, youre like a life saver bro. I recently found out that Im a trans guy. At first I was thinking of the name Keith, which I love, but it doesnt really work for my country? (Im Dutch) I later came out to my mom and we were brainstorming together about names and we came up with lots of names, but they didnt quite fit. (I wanted a name that began with S since thats the first letter of my birth name) Then my mom came up with Sylvian, Syl in short, and that was it, I felt the spark you know. Im totally planning on changing my name to that. My friends also call me Sylvian/Syl and it just feels so right! It feels really nice that my mom came up with it. And Im planning on jokingly refering to myself as Sylvester whenever I’ll be at fancy parties in the future lmao. Anyways, keep on doing what youre doing, thank you!

I had a similar experience! So, It started in early middle school. Even after liking being called male, only feeling comfortable looking male, etc, I still didn't know I was trans. During this time, I started wanting to go by Samuel. I asked my brother to call me it, I asked other people, and of course, I would be told: "that's a boys name, you're a girl!". I was confused why I couldn't go by it, it felt so right, like I was meant to go by anything other than my "birth name". After being met with conflict, I went through that conforming stage where I wore makeup, wore my hair short, wair "girly clothes", all that. It never felt right but I never thought about it until the summer before 8th grade. At that time, I pushed my "male identity" so far away to where I thought I just couldn't be a guy, I also found out about non-binary at the time so, I thought that was appropriate at the time and I thought I was non-binary for a few months (I'm not saying that everyone that is non-binary is just in a phase, that was just for me) until I researched a lot more into the topic of female-to-male trans individuals. At this time, I had my hair cut short, I was wearing things that I was more comfortable in but something was missing. I am an artist an I create OCs and characters a lot, so, I created this "character" named Andrew. He looked like how I wanted to look, he was me. I didn't realize I made who I was inside. I ended up choosing the name Andrew because I always liked that name. I'm a senior now and I'm going to get evaluated for T, it's like fulfilling a life-long dream. I've had dysphoria my whole life and I've finally realized it instead of going further and further into the closet and denying my true self. Whoo, sorry if that was bit of a read and poorly worded.

When I was deciding on a name, I almost went with Ciaran, and some days I regret not sticking with that. Years later, I ended up using it as the name of my first D&D character (but he spells it "Kyran"). I never really considered using the male name my parents had picked for me, because it was too close to my birth name for it to be comfortable, and I had a friend with that name, so it would have been weird.
@beckm97287 жыл бұрын
My parents apparently would've named me John (after my grandpa) if I was a boy, and I actually like that name and I'm holding onto it for when I have kids. Thing is, even though my parents technically picked both my legal name and nickname (Rebecca after Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and Becky after Becky Thatcher from Tom Sawyer, respectively because my parents are both NERDS) my older sister kinda made the final call on calling me Becky, since that was the name of one of her best friends from preschool. (Her other top choice was Lauren.) If I was a boy, however, she wanted to name me after her imaginary friend.... Hoonky. Needless to say, I dodged a bullet by being a girl.
