HOW I CLEAN MY RIMFIRE RIFLES

Just a quick video on how I go about cleaning my rimfire rifles.
Be extra careful with your crown. I pull my jag back through my barrel past my crown but I suggest you do so at your own risk. The best practice is to remove the jag or brush after you push past the crown.

On my CZ 455 I use a 20 cal brush and jag. Bore tech bore guide and Tipton cleaning rod. The rod has 5-40 threads and is smaller diameter. ( Normally used for 17hmr.) CZ recommends using a smaller rod. Tried to find a 22cal brush with 5-40 threads but no luck. CZ claims their barrel is smaller in diameter then most 22lLR rifles. The 20 caliper works fine. I use ballistol for cleaning. Run a soaked patch through. Let sit for five minutes. Run a nylon brush through three times. Another channel tested ballistol and as long as you let it sit for five minutes it does a great job of removing lead, copper and carbon. In his testing it was the only aerosol spray that worked.

The only drawback on my Marlin model 60 is that I can't clean it from the breach end.....So you have to be very mindfull of the crown.......On all my guns the first thing I use as a pre-cleaner on cotton swabs is WD-40 and then I go to my other cleaners after that......I also only use carbon fiber rods with plastic tips.

After removing excess grunge and getting mostly clean, I use Flitz polish. Ultra fine cleaner that doesn’t remove metal and leaves bore like glass.

I had several CZ 457s and I traded all but 2 for a Anschutz 1710 in case I decided to get into some matches. I haven`t done any competition shooting for 20 years and then it was only bench rest so other types of competition will be all new and probably hard for an old man however I love shooting 22`s. Not sure where the matches are held but I will check around for them.

I do pretty much the same. But, after cleaning I put hopes oil on a patch. Run it then a couple of dry patches. Living in the Olympic mountains it's very humid. Often raining. Just to be sure there is a layer of protection from the moisture. Seems to work

Spray the brush with gunkout or break cleaner spray, that's how i spray clean the rod after spray it on the towel and wipe the rod down.

Great video ! I’m going to conclude that you do not like bore snakes and or bronze brushes. All the bore snakes I’ve seen have bronze brushes. Nylon is the only material that would allow the back and forth motion in the chamber area.

I give mine a quick blast of GunScrubber down the bore and then a couple of passes with a boresnake with oil on the end after every outing. Same with the bolts: Guns rubber the oil on a toothbrush. The .22's get thousands of rounds through them a year (kids love em) and no problems so far.

I use CRC BRAKLEEN TO SHIFT the carbon out of my barrels & bolts .I squirt in & out of the bolt till it runs clean then bloke the end of the barrel the fill it with Brakleen let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes drain & use nylon brush then clean rags then WD40 spray bolt & barrel then air hoes it away & wipe with clean rags ./

Sniper cleaning tips: 1. Always wear disposable gloves. Never let cleaning solvents, oils, etc. touch your skin and enter your blood stream. 2. Disposable blue shop towels work better than regular paper towels. 3. The most important tool used to clean any firearm is a bore scope. Unless you actually look in the bore and see if it’s clean you are just guessing. Also carbon rings in a .22 are very common for that you need either JB or Iosso bore paste and some elbow grease their is no getting around it.

Thanks Josh Awesome video Mate I’m cleaning my 455 tomorrow I’ll follow your lead it looks like an easy process , as I told you before mine will only shoot SK High velocity ammo , it would make sense that if it has a carbon ring in the chamber lead the high velocity stuff may have the extra power to overcome the ring by forcing through it , I’ll give it a real good clean then try some SK match std velocity ammo that it refuses to shoot with any accuracy l mean 3/4 inch with flyers out to 1.1/2 at 50 yards when I get .3 - .4s with the high velocity stuff , do you have any pointers with fouling the barrel after cleaning like how many rounds would you put through it before expecting the best accuracy it will deliver , thanks for your time and knowledge Mate , by the way I just fitted a timney trigger assembly can’t wait to try it out , Aussie Steve .

Do you have any complaints about the boretech cleaning rod? I normally use a Tipton but their 22 cal rod doesn’t fit in the bore of a CZ so I had to move to the 20 cal rod which requires that I use the 20 cal jag. I am not sure I’m getting the best cleaning with my setup. So I’ve been looking at new rimfire specific rods and jags.

Why not inspect your cleaning efforts with a bore-scope long before you've run 20 patches through it? The minute amount of stain on the patch looks like it's getting there from the chamber face as the patch folds into the chamber.

I clean the receiver area and chamber face while its soaking usually but i suppose you could bore scope it. 95% of people dont own a bore scope though

Did the cleaning bring your accuracy back to normal? I have pretty much the same setup as you minus the trigger. Mine typically shoots in the high .3s - .4s with eley match 1060- 1065fps. I still felt like it could do better so i invested in a Harrell tuner and it took my high .3s down to low to mid .2s set at 281 and is very consistent. Thanks for sharing your cleaning regiment.

Love your vids. Two questions: How often do you take your barrel back to bare steel? Do you ever use a borescope after your regular cleaning process to see how clean the barrel is (or is not)? Seems like the general consensus is for 22LR to keep the barrel at some level of consistently dirty (never take back to bare steel), where as for shooters like F-Class or Benchrest, the barrels are always taken back to bare steel. I like Eric Cortina's explanation, he can keep a barrel consistently clean, but not consistently dirty. I fully realize 22lr is a different animal. My 457 Chassis seems to take about 50 rounds to settle back down after cleaning back to bare steel. Trying to find the happy medium.

Related question: when doing ammo test which is better or what you recommend between types? shoot 10 cleaning/fouling shots or run a nylon brush once/twice (with/without solvent) or maybe brush then re-fouling 10 shots(or more?)..I guess if I used a chrono the re-fouling would be efficient time/ammo use.

Hi Lunkydog. I wet patch at first to mop out the barrel with 2 wet patches. Then scrub very wet. The first few dry patches are really wet patches with that much cleaner already in the barrel. Just my method. Probably a thousand ways to do it with same results

I’m using a .17 cal rod. Read elsewhere (RC) about the ejector scraping the .22 cal rod. Using a Tipton one piece carbon fiber rod.

If a boresnake had a nylon brush in it i would use it. I just dont like having a bronze brush in my barrel as I think they are too aggressive

@@PursuitofAccuracy agreed on bronze brush. I shoot a lot of rimfire benchrest. I Take the bronze out of my bore snakes. I’ve noticed after boretech I can use Eezox and get more dirty patches also. A lot of CNC cut chambers help alleviate carbon build up as there’s no tool mark often associated with chambers that are reamed. I’m having a CZ barrel done like this. Tell Langley his “Widia Rep” says what’s up…I need to come plink around with you guys. It Might teach me a thing or 2 lol. Enjoy watching the videos.

Thanks Sam. After getting my own borescope, I was really kind of surprised how the barrel stayed actually very clean while the chamber quickly starts collecting lead and carbon. I suspect this is different on just about every barrel and chamber style. The lilja seems to get dirty very quickly.

Thanks, I called them and the tech guy said Measure the full length of the rifle and get the next size longer. My rifle is 38 inches long he recommended a 40 inch. Hey I use the boretec jag specifically for .22lr My next video out i actually talk about tracking your shots. I recommend shooting from a clean barrel on paper to collect data on all that information so its no longer a guess

I have found that a nylon brush just doesn't clean nearly as well as a Dewey 22 caliber rimfire brush. Absolutely shocked how black my patches were after using nylon brush. Great video!

After dry patching I saturate a bore mop with EASY OFF oven cleaner (basically a carbon remover for ovens) and 2-3 minutes later, I send a bore brush down it chucked in a cordless drill (*after seeing a popular firearm YT'er do it AND confirming its efficacy with bore scoping*). The result is amazing. *ZERO* scratching of the bore. Actually appears polished. I don't worry about copper fouling. For one, .22 rimfire ammo is plated and even then copper only deposits until the irregularity/void fills or smooths out. *THAT'S WHY 10-20 fouling shots are fired after cleaning before shooting for score*. Gotta refoul the barrel.

Hi Josh, great video presentation as always, I value your opinion so i'd like to know how you go about cleaning your B14-R. What kind of bore guide do you use for that rifle? I'm having trouble finding a bore guide that actually fits the bolt channel without getting fouled by the ejector at the bottom of the channel. I have tried several bore guides but none of them clear the ejector so are useless. Now i am limited to using a snake to clean my bore as I don't like running a rod without a guide for obvious reasons, any help will be appreciated. ATB.

I use my vudoo boreguide on the b14r without any issue. Its the boretec guide. I think the ejector is still kind of in the way but i also use the .22rf rod from boretec and im able to clean without any real issues.

Great cleaning regime. Personally I use a bore snake after every outing, same practice with my shotguns. I use a propriety barrel cleaner on the actual snake. A few pull throughs, then dry patches. Toothbrush with some solvent around other internals, then dry off with lint. Bolt the same as you, with a smear of gun oil. I had cleanliness drilled into me by my dad and the army, fact is I cannot use a gun without cleaning it afterwards. I think people are inherently lazy, that coupled with 22lr is the muckyest round there is leads to problems that are avoidable. If you wound an animal because accuracy is down to your laziness? In my book totally goes against shooting ethics.

The old Lee Enfields had a cord pull-through [kept in the butt] which was drawn out the muzzle,so many of them had bad muzzle wear as they aged so it's a rod from the chamber for me no cords or other similar methods.

@@MrOlgrumpy I used those for years. Compared to modern bore snake materials they were just crude and lacked any real effect imo. Also there have been leaps and bounds in barrel construction since SMLE's were made. It is 2021 not 1940.

Why dont you modify your cheek riser so you dont have to disturb the bedding to clean? Use the holes on the cheek riser for a guide and drill two quarter inch holes in the stock. Enlarge them slightly with a round file. Enlarge the holes in the cheek riser and epoxy two quarter inch stainless pins in the cheek riser. The cheek riser can then be lifted off to insert the bore guide without loosening the action screws and potentially changing the bedding. If you enlarge the holes too much for the pins you can put velcro on the comb of the stock and the bottom of the cheek riser.

Are you using a .20 or .22 cal cleaning rod? I heard that some folks undersize the rod to prevent stuck patches. Just wanted to know what size you use and your experience behind using it regarding bore tightness/fit. If you mentioned it in the video, I may have missed it.

Josh is it necessary to use a bore guide if using a Dewey rod that has a coating on it? What size square patch are you using? Do square do better than round? Thanks Dennis.

Dennis i would always use a bpre guide. If will help align your rod and save the coating from being rubbed off. I use 1" square for loose applying chemicals etc and 1 1/8 for tight clean up patches

I prefer Dewey rods and aluminum jags, but do use the Bore Tech guides on my CZ and Savage. I use Possum Hollow's guide on my Anschutz Mark 12. Nice video, thanks!

Great video! That is how I will clean mine from now on! Thank you. Being old school, I rarely cleaned any of my rimfires until accuracy problems or reliability trouble showed up. Always ran patches wet with WD-40 and sprayed the brush to scrub. Cleaned the wax/powder fouling out well. :)

Hi Ralph, For the mtr stock I use 30-35 in lbs and 40-45 in lbs for the manner since it has aluminum pillars

@Pursuit of Accuracy I'm going to set my Tikka t1x 22lr trigger down to about 2 lbs and I was wondering what torque to set my action back to? So, some where between 30 - 35 inch pounds sounds about right to me
