Tip for those using wooden stocks like the Varmint MTR - put a big piece of plastic under the bore guide to protect your wood from the inevitable spill as it will discolor your stock 😢 Tip 2 - teslong wifi version is cheaper and works with your phone as the screen/recording device

Went to the range today to get some DOPE for my 457 LRP using SK LRM ammo. Thought I was going crazy, rifle was shooting .2" groups just 2 weeks ago with the same ammo and today it was horrible and flying all over the place. I then remembered that the kids must have shot 500 rounds of cci sv with it over the weekend, had a proper carbon ring. Gave it a nice cleaning, after 10 odd rounds of SK all is back to normal

Great vid, I’ve never used a brush on a RF ever and I’m an old guy, I just purchased nylon brushes for the chambers only. I always patched out at the end of a session, before the fouling/carbon has a chance to set up. Easier to take care of business while the barrel is still warm.

I just purchased a 10/22 from Gunbroker that has been worked by Connecticut Precision Chambering and I would definitely like to have the scope before it gets here plus I probably should have one for my other .22s that you have talked me into.

I use C4 and a .22 bore mop first. Run it down the bore and then let it sit in the carbon ring/chamber area for an hour or so. Follow it up with a , gasp, bronze bore brush. Push felt pellets through the bore until they come out clean. I also use a carbon fiber one piece rod. Don't forget to clean the rod itself. BTW this is not the same C4 we used to heat up our C-Rations.

TNT used to be the cleaner of choice but C4 is a more modern chemical with a lot of power potential too.

Nice video, thanks. Would like to see the same thing on the MTR barrel with a couple hundred rounds through it. Cleaning a higher quality barrel is not the same as a “factory” barrel. Seems I always have to resort to Bore Shine and a lot of scrubbing with a brass brush to get the carbon out of the grooves.

I tend to just let them soak a little longer with the c4 ans get the same results. The key is letting the proper chemical work so your not having to scrub your arms off 😁

I have to quit watching your videos, Josh! They are costing me! But... thank you for the advice that I have utilized: 1) 457 MTR; 2) bore scope; 3) Bore Tech carbon removal; Bore Tech jag; nylon brushes (can't go wrong, right?). AND... I received the hat; nice looking and to the point... "Pursuit of Accuracy." Further, I did not realize that getting a clean patch out of the barrel meant that the "hard, unsoftened" carbon ring was guaranteed to have been removed (thus, as you advised... a bore scope). Upon realization of that fact, I have changed my cleaning procedure to match the one that you shared in this video.

I have a cleaning regimen that works for my conditions. Just spray oil on everything. Silicone oil on rubber parts if there are any and run a bore snake or patch…. 😁 it’s the crude way as the tropical wet humid rainy conditions where I live are hard even on stainless steel specially when I hunt near the coast were you could taste and smell the salty air even from a distance from the shore. 😁 enjoyed watching your vid though and if I were to properly clean one of my display trophy rigs which I hardly use for hunting…this would be a go to video.

The bronze brush is faster than the nylon. But if you let the chemicals work there magic it doesnt take too much scrubbing

The boremop doesnt really collect any fouling. I tend to use it after ive cleaned all the loose fouling. I clean the nylon brushes every now and again with just some rimfire blend.

Thanks for the video, Josh. Don't let Jon and Jon see you clean those barrels without covering the Tract. Heaven forbid you slop something on the lens.... I love Tract scopes also. I also use the bore Tech stuff. Their copper cleaner works great for the center fire barrels. Seems your Lilja barrels are easier to clean than my stock barrel. Just takes forever and the patches never come out total clean. So I just run some Ballistol patches to get the main crud out between real cleanings like you demonstrate here. Removal of the carbon ring is the most important part of the process.

Yeah its hard to get a totally clean patch out of a rimfire but as long as the carbon rings gone its good to go for me. The tracts are in no danger, they have good coatings 😁

Aluminum jags i will pick up. Great tips. Im totally against brass brushes on rimfire rifles. Yes brass is softer than steel but steel extractors still wear on brass casings. The lands cut in the barrel are very fine and hold your accuracy. Brass brushes add 1000’s of rounds of wear for no reason. Nylon bends in the face of any metal and it a much safer choice.

Boretech makes some killer cleaning products. I use their rimfire blend and if things get really stubborn, I put an earplug in the muzzle and fill the bore with it. Let it stand a day or two, or three and you can usually just push the funk out with patches.

I dont think 22 barrels break in. Ive shot lots of brand new barrels at the gun smiths shop and they shoot grest right out of the gate. That little lead bullet isnt changing the barrel appreciably to break it in. I figure if i cant shoot one out, how could i break it in.

I agree with @joed3264 on the felt pellets. If you are not using the VFG pellets you really are just trying to do it the hard way. Also have to say the melonite cleaning rod from KSS in .187 with a bore guide made for your specific action is the smart choice, if you have a good barrel.

Nope, just make sure your using the proper equipment and solutions. If your aiming to keep the chamber clean it really only takes about 15 or 20 strokes of a nylon brush after letting the chamber soak with a carbon cleaner. Few patches til clean and your done

Hey Josh, will the Boretech 22 cal cleaning rod pass through your Kidd and Lilja barrels easily? I have a Dewey 22 cal coated rod and it won't make it thru my Kidd, and it is snug in my Lilja. I had to go to 17 cal rods that I don't like at all.

I am running an experiment since October...I am NOT cleaning my CZs (I normally clean every 100-200 rounds when casually shooting and every 25 rounds when shooting for score. I just want to see what happens...so NO cleaning for a few more months. I am up to about 2000 rounds on each rifle...and I can't REALLY tell because All my shooting has been cold weather...

I am doing a version of the same thing on my Vudoo. C4 chamber cleaning only, and pulling only dry patches through after shooting to leave the "seasoning" in the barrel. Not using any solvent. Saw a video from one of the Vudoo staffers suggesting this method - meaning to not remove the layer that accurizes the barrel. More witchcraft? Maybe so, but so far so good. Only shooting premium ammo (Lapua/SK/Eley) so the quality of the layer being laid down is good.

Great video! i recently put a MTR barrel on my 457. i use a one piece stainless steel rod. it was fine in other 22's but it's tight in the MTR barrel, so much so its scoring the rod!!! (hope i didnt damage the bore?) some say use a 20 cal rod? pretty hard to come by... any suggestions? bore tech rods are hard to find up here... any help is Greatly appreciated!!!!)

What is your thoughts on a 22 cal boresnake after each session until 4-500 rounds down the tube before Carbon cleaning? Or do you suggest a different clean cycle? I know it depends on the system and that varies do asking in general terms.

If you ran a boresnake every 100 or so rounds it may hold off the carbon ring a little. I dont have much faith in the cleaning ability of boresnakes though

M CZ457mtr manners are set up exactly like yours, Lijia bbl, timnvy trigger, Tract scope 30 mil rail, Lapua osp .29 or better at 50 and .38 at 100 I don't think there could be much that more add-ons will make this rifle more more constantly accurate. Gummy Bears at 100, eggs at 200, and tomatoes at 300

Quick question if I may? Do you clean after every shoot or after a certain number of rounds? And if you're not going to clean a gun, say if you only put 50 rounds through it, is it safe to leave until the next shoot in terms of the barrel not being protected but that light coat of oil?

I clean before every match or every 300-400 rounds. Its fine to leave the barrel for a few weeks to a month. Longer than that id clean it
