Interesting to hear your experience - I am the complete opposite, I am most efficient in bursts. I never had any issues with task switching but on the other hand I get fatigued doing the same thing for extended periods of time, so spending a focused 30 mins - 1h on a task, then moving onto something else (e.g. emails, documentation, etc.) is where I'm the most productive. Also, I find that my best ideas/solutions to problems usually come after I get up and go for a little walk to fetch a snack or coffee. I'll either think of a solution on the way, or it'll stare right at me when I sit back down to look at my screen.

@@PTv1deos it’s something I’m still trying to work on. At work it’s easy to avoid this however when I work on my hybrid days, it’s so easy to get distracted. Easier said than done, though.

Frankly, having no boss makes it more difficult to uphold work ethics, i.e. put in the hours that need to be put in. There is an interesting dynamics that comes into play when more than one human work on a project. I find it challenging to remain motivated at all times for extended periods (-> months and years). It helps a lot if there is another person that either pushes you a bit (boss) or drags you a bit (colleagues).

I agree with your recomendations. I miss a lot being all wired-up on coding, or most accurately, solving software technology problems. I can't do it anymore, at least for the amount of hours I used to some years ago. Now I focus more on solving the issue with the process and leave the coding to younger folks of the team. I step in for optimizations and code & arquitectural reviews. To discuss what we need to create in order to solve the puzzle, and to help the team stay calmed, focused and overall happy with what we are doing. My number 1 tip to stay focused is: Telling your self that you are going to put X hours to actual coding work today. That way, you will have a better chance to commit. Then work for some time, always keeping in check for tireness, and all your needs. Fluids, food, etc. And repeat every day. Do not try to push yourself to max to get that X hours. Just have it as a goal, and soon enough you'll be doing them and more.

I used to code for hours. It really is not hard to do if you have some inspiration. My inspiration was being totally fascinated by making the computer do whatever I wanted it to do. I would receive specifications and it was up to me to design the solution and make the machinery do what was specified. That was absolutely fun. Yeah, sometimes, I would get bored depending on what I was coding. In some cases, I had numerous things to code for which I would make a template to use to just fill in the pieces that were different. Those were sort of boring and I would try to go so many hours where I did not have a compile error or an error in functionality. Now I maybe speaking out of turn here. If you do some programming in the business world, you most likely are going to deal with databases as well as the internet. You may even deal with an application server. Those are great places to start. If you are not doing business programming, you will probably be working with some device that needs code. Those will require you to know all about the device and what its functionality is. I did some of that too. Business programming is a good place to start. There are needs for many of those guys. Gather experience there and then branch out in the direction you want to go.

I go into deep focus for 90 minutes (this is the maximum time that your brain can focus), take a break for 15/20 minutes without any distractions like mobile devices. Something to add though: The number of monitors or monitor real estate can be a trap. I used to have 3 monitors (1: 27inch, 34 inch on top, 24 inch on the left vertically) and it was very odd that I really had no tasks to occupy third monitor(24 inch one) and this was distracting and I was losing my focus because I was thinking about "What to add to this monitor". So my advice is to use more monitors when you are 100% sure that you know that you will use it. If you are just learning to code - I recommend using only one monitor and completely disable the others - this will help you to keep focus.

For me, there's another important change: I take the most of my free time too. For that, I delegate every task that takes me time during my free time. I have a wife and a daughter, I don't want to everyday wash the dishes, cook, and then "WHAT?! it's midnight. I want to spend more time with them!" So I did 4 changes: 1 - I don't cook and don't wash the dishes. I bought a washing machine (it's not common in my country, it's expensive, but worth it) and I also buy healthy foods and I don't cook (maybe in your country it's too expensive, but in Brazil, a programmer can do that). 2 - I don't leave my office during the day, only for lunch and to go to the bathroom, so I bring everything to my office, as you mentioned. 3 - I don't put my feet in my office during my free time. 4 - I don't clean my house too much, and my wife don't have time to that too. So I pay for a cleaning service every Thursday morning. It costs about 4-5% of the salary of an average senior developer in Brazil, and WORTH IT!

At 6:35, "The older you get, you'll just have pain for no reason." I disagree. The older you get, you'll just have pain because you're older. :-) I'm there, and it's just a fact of life. On the matter of coding for hours though, there have been times when I sat at my desk for up to 8 hours with maybe 2 or 3 bathroom breaks (and working through lunch with a sandwich at my desk), and by the end of the day my eyes felt like they were burning. When I started taking a break every hour or so and walking around for just a few minutes, it made all the difference in the world for my fatigue level and my eye strain. I guess I was unknowingly implementing the pomodoro technique, only with longer periods between breaks. Just my experience.
