How do you stay focused while coding?
@r9ckless

Start doing the easiest task first (with prioraty ofcourse) and get into the flow much naturally. Also. Try to put slack and other browsers in different screen & put the messaging apps on mute as they are the productivity killers.

Not sure if you'll see this, but I just wanted to thank you. My path into CS has been eerily similar to yours in how we went about it since I got my bachelors in biology. I took prerequisite classes at a CSU campus nearby starting January of last year and applied for Spring admission to some master's programs. Today I found out I got into Cal Poly SLO and am so excited to start. Thank you for all the motivation!

Interesting to hear your experience - I am the complete opposite, I am most efficient in bursts. I never had any issues with task switching but on the other hand I get fatigued doing the same thing for extended periods of time, so spending a focused 30 mins - 1h on a task, then moving onto something else (e.g. emails, documentation, etc.) is where I'm the most productive. Also, I find that my best ideas/solutions to problems usually come after I get up and go for a little walk to fetch a snack or coffee. I'll either think of a solution on the way, or it'll stare right at me when I sit back down to look at my screen.

I used to code for hours. It really is not hard to do if you have some inspiration. My inspiration was being totally fascinated by making the computer do whatever I wanted it to do. I would receive specifications and it was up to me to design the solution and make the machinery do what was specified. That was absolutely fun. Yeah, sometimes, I would get bored depending on what I was coding. In some cases, I had numerous things to code for which I would make a template to use to just fill in the pieces that were different. Those were sort of boring and I would try to go so many hours where I did not have a compile error or an error in functionality. Now I maybe speaking out of turn here. If you do some programming in the business world, you most likely are going to deal with databases as well as the internet. You may even deal with an application server. Those are great places to start. If you are not doing business programming, you will probably be working with some device that needs code. Those will require you to know all about the device and what its functionality is. I did some of that too. Business programming is a good place to start. There are needs for many of those guys. Gather experience there and then branch out in the direction you want to go.

Frankly, having no boss makes it more difficult to uphold work ethics, i.e. put in the hours that need to be put in. There is an interesting dynamics that comes into play when more than one human work on a project. I find it challenging to remain motivated at all times for extended periods (-> months and years). It helps a lot if there is another person that either pushes you a bit (boss) or drags you a bit (colleagues).

I personally use something called Deep work. I go into deep focus for 90 minutes (this is the maximum time that your brain can focus), take a break for 15/20 minutes without any distractions like mobile devices. I repeat this same schedule for around 4 times. and it works like magic. Oh and, I recommend you only putting up to 5 tasks for each day.

Great video, I love to be super focused, but taking breaks for me is also important, usually a 25/5 mins or 50/10 mins is the way to go.. Once in a while I go for longer breaks like 20 or 25 mins. But hey, to each their own.

An important tip as well: avoid vitamin c when taking stimulants, as this pushes stimulants out of the body quicker. This also goes for coffee, as caffeine is a stimulant. Take vitamin c at night if you need to. So avoid those types of foods when being productive

Sorry I couldn't listen, had to stare at that screen all the time :D Awesome! I also got one but way smaller. One thing I recommend is a simple, not too small 16:9 screen but rotated 90° for coding. Seeing twice as many lines is very useful.

lol'd at the ending, haha. :D Great video for what it's meant to express, but i actually like to get up and do little other things every once in a while. Getting up and not looking at the screen helps me to think about solutions and ideas for more complex problems (which is rare, to be fair. i'm a "basic" allrounder web dev). Essentially i just like to soft-reset the visual impulses i have. But i have to admit, social distractions are very destructive to the productivity.

Something to add though: The number of monitors or monitor real estate can be a trap. I used to have 3 monitors (1: 27inch, 34 inch on top, 24 inch on the left vertically) and it was very odd that I really had no tasks to occupy third monitor(24 inch one) and this was distracting and I was losing my focus because I was thinking about "What to add to this monitor". So my advice is to use more monitors when you are 100% sure that you know that you will use it. If you are just learning to code - I recommend using only one monitor and completely disable the others - this will help you to keep focus.

For me, there's another important change: I take the most of my free time too. For that, I delegate every task that takes me time during my free time. I have a wife and a daughter, I don't want to everyday wash the dishes, cook, and then "WHAT?! it's midnight. I want to spend more time with them!" So I did 4 changes: 1 - I don't cook and don't wash the dishes. I bought a washing machine (it's not common in my country, it's expensive, but worth it) and I also buy healthy foods and I don't cook (maybe in your country it's too expensive, but in Brazil, a programmer can do that). 2 - I don't leave my office during the day, only for lunch and to go to the bathroom, so I bring everything to my office, as you mentioned. 3 - I don't put my feet in my office during my free time. 4 - I don't clean my house too much, and my wife don't have time to that too. So I pay for a cleaning service every Thursday morning. It costs about 4-5% of the salary of an average senior developer in Brazil, and WORTH IT!

Honestly, I don't need to do anything to get focused. I get in a zone naturally. I just start writing something and keep writing until I lose inspiration. Usually, I could 12-20 hours straight and then take a day to reflect and envision and then I go on another 12-20 hour run. I dunno why, I just get so intrigued by finding the solution to the project.

A good advice, though I would say you definitely don't need to spend over a grand for a chair. lol Mine looks identical to the one in the vid, and it was $300, if I remember correctly. A foot cushion is great, too, especially since I'm short. Having said that, no matter what chair you have, I don't think it's healthy to work at the desk for hours with no break. You should definitely stand up, get your eyes off the screen, maybe go for a walk. When I'd get stuck on a difficult task, sometimes a simple walk would jog my brain and help me come to the conclusion.

The nirvana state you describing is not good because the code written during that time is often very complex and hard to understand after some time. Slowly written and well designed code is much more stable and maintainable as we're fully conscious during that process. The "nirvana" state makes us little unconscious so it's hard to figure out what you had in mind, especially for teammates. It's better to try stay highly focused, but not getting into the "nirvana".
