@@harrisonsrad 9/10 traders don’t take time to actually learn and practice trading. I think everyone should paper trade for 6 months to a year while studying pattern breakouts, trend lines, support & resistance, pivot points, volume, bid-ask spreads etc. before they ever try a trade with real money. Unfortunately it’s one skill which requires education on the matter, but is easy accessible to everyone. THAT is why the number of losing traders is so high IMO.

I wouldn't waste your time or money with actual books (just yet). Look into Investopedia first, it has TONS of information with videos. I work in the markets for a global bank/brokerage and we constantly use that site for reference. For books specifically as reference, I would find what interests you first, learn what you can about them and then perhaps buy books just as a reference. For example, I needed to know more about interest rate and currency trading (to better understand the trade desk) so I bought a book on that after learning about it on investopedia and KZbin.

I trade naked options with a cash account (not margin). I begin all of my charting on the 1 year, daily chart or the 180 day, 4 hour chart to paint the big picture of where the stock is going and what major patterns its forming long term. Then I zoom into the hourly, 30 minute and/or 15 minute to chart out the smaller patterns forming. When I'm actually IN a trade, I'll watch the 5m, 15m and sometimes 30 if it's a swing trade and for day trades, the 1m and 5m mostly while keeping an eye on the 15 minute just to watch the bigger picture at the same time. Basically, I like to always start very broad to see the whole "landscape" and then work my way in, to observe the individual blades of grass lol

That being said, when someone like me just wants to educate themselves but doesn't know where to start I feel most safe following the guidance from those I trust. I know you're still in the process of mastering all of this on your end but I wanted to thank you for giving those like me references to resources that you use to educate yourself and be part of day trading and investing. I've been wanting a video like this for quite some time and couldn't think of a better person to produce something like this than yourself. Thanks for always being 100 with us Nick! I get that Roth doesn't pay taxes when you draw it out at 59 but I'm wondering why you chose that over traditional? Did you consider the pros and cons of both? After my research I changed from Roth to traditional years ago because the traditional will always have a greater return in the long run.
@NickWright
@NickWright 3 жыл бұрын
I'm curious how you came to that conclusion about a greater return? Essentially your return all comes down to how you invest and manage your account. Or, if you invest in mutual funds, how THEY manage it. If you invest the exact same amount of money into the exact same things in a Roth IRA and a traditional IRA, in theory, both will be the same size by the time you're 60. The difference is, WHEN you go to collect that money, uncle same will take a large percentage of it as income tax if it's from your traditional IRA. You get to keep 100% of it with a Roth IRA. The catch is, you can't use your Roth IRA contributions as tax write-offs each year. You can with a traditional. But for me, I'm thinking long term. Idk who will be in office or what the economy will look like by the time I'm 60. I don't want to risk having a 50% income tax being in place in 30 years, so I'm opting to forgo having to pay taxes on the profits. That's just me. Either way, if you're investing for the future you are moving in the right direction regardless if you go Roth, traditional, 401k or just a simple investment portfolio!
@steedaf1gtr7
@steedaf1gtr7 3 жыл бұрын
@@NickWright you're able to speak on this much intellucally than I am but I came to that conclusion by listening to this audi book on IRA accounts. (Forgot the name) he had this simple math argument. Generally income tax is about 30% and generally a rate of return is about 7%. I'm more of a set it and forget it kind of guy. So if you invest before taxes every pay check you're essentially investing more so you're rate of return at 7% is better than it would be after taxes. Also he said something about being in a lower tax bracket at that age so not getting hit as much when you draw it out. My plan wasn't to draw it out entirely anyway. I was going to live off my military pension, City pension and then draw out a supplemental income from that account as needed. Unless I needed a large amount for something like an emergency or an investment.

Im guessing this is so that you feel more competent and comfortable to speak on this topic? What about just starting it anyways and documenting the journey as you get better and better. Also really impressed that you’re investing on top. I too think Value is huge 2021-22 power play with RSI to Growth starting to decline with relative performance to S&P reaching biggest divergence because of Covid. Vaccine paves the way for a big shift in investing strategies in my opinion. So any Value play with decent fundamentals and growth opportunity is a big play.

99% of day traders don't make a profit over a long (1+yr) time horizon. 99.9999% of day traders don't beat the index over a long time horizon (10% annualized before inflation with a total stock market index fund like VTSAX). This includes institutional investors. You have a better chance of getting struck by lightening, winning the lottery, and getting bit by a shark all in the same day, then you do of making money day trading in the long run.
@NickWright
@NickWright 3 жыл бұрын
This is because 99% of day traders treat it like gambling and don't take the time to actually LEARN trading. I tell everyone to paper trade with simulation money for a YEAR while studying pattern breakouts, charting, sizing and honing in on discipline toward your strategy and psychology. You can't just pick up a phone, open a platform and "give trading a shot" for 3 months. You will 100% loose everything that way. This is a skill that requires years of educating and practice. I have an entire group chat of friends who do this for a living, 3 who make six figures a year from it and one who makes 7 figures a year form it. If you are looking at this like a lottery, you are gambling. Not trading. And most good traders will beat the market by growth % once they are profitable because it's apples and oranges... Index funds are conservative buy and holds. compounding for the LONG term. Growth per year is only the small picture for that. Trading by default deals in larger percentage leaps in shorter windows of time, with higher risk and over all smaller capital sizings.
