Amy Landino I'm a painter and I find the hardest thing can be just getting started. When I manage to do that, though, I can get into a zone where it becomes very easy to keep going. As far as what motivates me, I find watching biographies on artists or watching people paint, even if it's just a KZbin video, is very effective for me.
@dragonswordmountain29086 жыл бұрын
+Sara Makes Art Me too, getting started is the hardest. But recently I've noticed that if i keep telling myself as a joke that it is very easy, for some reason it becomes easier. I imagine my girlfriend telling me "You have got to do this for your own good, i know you can do it, take time off and don't regret it" and for some reason it reaches my core and i just do it.

What if I don't have an Instagram? Would Snapchat work for the book club? And what charities are you into or would like to be more into? Just curious because I have been thinking about motivating myself, and I honestly think doing something beyond me would be very motivating. Do you have any ideas?
@Cecile-bm9qw6 жыл бұрын
I noticed, and I know it will sound like such a girl thing to say but I'm often less motivated during my periods. I mean I really wish I was that superwoman who doesn't care and who can accomplish anything whenever but... I'm not. So now that I've identified this as a pattern in my motivation, I block the days on my calendar (see how good of a student I am??) and on 2 particular shitty days, I just plan on doing easy stuff, with more recovery time and longer nights of sleep. That way, I feel less guilty and I'm even more motivated after. We have to be gentle with ourselves sometimes.... sometimes ! Thanks for the video :-)

You are amazing! Yes! I need to take your advice and plan my easy tasks for the hard days at the start of my period. I know when it's coming every single month! And I need to plan my go-getter tasks for ovulation when I feel particularly on point. Lol! Thanks Cecile

It is true. I have issues with this and depression being worse every single month. My doctor actually told me it's a real thing for some women. There's a definite pattern for me.

This is definitely a medical fact due to the cyclical nature of our female hormones. Sadly, we live in a male dominated culture that makes us feel like we're crazy or less competent when this happens (and tends to deny the existence). Usually in an on-going funk I prioritize a LOT of sleep for 3 or so nights. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. And knock it off with the coffee. Coffee dependence can get me in a real lull. By day 3 or 4 I'm guaranteed to feel better. Thanks for starting this conversation, Amy!

I'm totally with the "MOVE" tip. Even if I don't feel like it, I know that once I'm out I love to take a walk and I know that this simple action gives me a boost of energy. Then, I write a lot too (much more than usually) because I need to make clarity, and I like to plan because it gives me a sense of control. Instead, what I tend to do that stresses me out much more and drains my energy (!) is using too much screens. Tv series, social, internet, i feel put down in a black hole. So i know that if I want really to recharge and relax I have to stay away from these things that do nothing but make me feel more stressed, tired and sad. Cleaning helps me too: my environment and myself (nothing is better than a good refreshing shower). Summary MORE OF/YES TO: 👟 - Physical activity (a nice walk!) 💭 - Writing thoughts 📝 - Planning (not too much) 🏠 - Cleaning your environment 🚿 - Shower & Self care 💕 - Your passion/s! LESS OF/NO TO: 📵 - Screens! 📺 - Tv series (with moderation) 📱 - Social media (0 is better)

Great thinking but for me it's sad and embarrassing to say but even taking a shower everyday has been hard for me I have 0 motivation untill now that I am at least trying to learn how to keep moving keep on pushing and motivated to accomplish even the little things just to make myself happy and feel a little more peace and strength but trust me it is so much easier said than done for someone like me but I know God will give me the motivation and strength mindset and faith I need to succeed 💯

I allow myself to be in the moment. Like at work, I hit a wall most days and I don't want to do any work. So I go outside and chill at a near by park and allow myself to be. It really motivates me by reminding me that life isn't always about working hard and sitting in front of a computer. Love this video!

Amy, you are wise beyond your years. Your tips are so helpful. And I like your perspective on stopping to check in with yourself to see if you're off kilter or just need to slow down and rest a tired mind and body and then apply the balm that is called for. No need to beat yourself up over it. Thx! Awesome, awesome.

I didn't realized how much of a slump I have been in until I watched this video! I needed ALL of the tips. I literally took notes. The biggest aha-moment for me is that my "moments of relaxation" are only good for me if they FUEL me. Checking out of reality to watch something or sit on social media only leave me feeling more drained, therefore it cannot count as proper resting time. It's just me being unproductive. I am now going to get my butt MOVING, and start with some small wins to build momentum. Thank you!
@jenniferhergert44476 жыл бұрын
I realized today that nothing is forcing me to constantly be productive and just go, go, go. We don't have to be efficient in any way and it's our life, we can do with it whatever we want. I am a person who wants to achieve without end, constantly. This idea, that I have the same worth, independent of what I produce or achieve, really helped me. Sometimes when I am not motivated what helps me is to just do it anyway, and the motivation comes on its own. Sometimes though it's time to rethink. Is this really what I need, or am I doing it because I think I should?

Thanks Amy! I’ve been feeling like this a bit recently which I now recognise is a sign I’m burnt out and being pulled off course by people and projects that aren’t aligned with my vision. What I find helps me (besides reviewing my commitments and politely getting out of those I shouldn’t be involved with) is indulging in some learning, like an online course (especially one with some kind of certificate, for the accomplishment feels) or getting offline and doing something crafty, making something with my hands, cooking. Thanks for the insight to your motivation as well, as it’s easy to look at others (you) and assume they’re always on and motivated.

I've been working intentionally for several weeks to pare down in my life. As a high achiever, I had way too many obligations, projects going, commitments, etc. It has felt strange to have down time but I feel like it's given my brain space to breathe. Besides, my version of down time is still very limited tv or veg time. It has actually meant more reading, more creative projects strictly for fun, and lots of decluttering. I can relate to every example you gave in this video! So glad I found your channel a few months ago!

Thank you for differentiating between TV binge days and procrastinating. There are some days when you just want to crash and do something that doesn't require effort, and binge watching is consuming a story in an easy way. However, when you let the TV become all you do, it starts interfering with attaining your goals. I hear so many people talk about the latter without mentioning the difference, and I was surprised to see a person who talks so much about self-motivation (even someone as awesome as you!) mention that TV can be a good thing to not beat yourself up over if you're doing it in moderation. That's a thing I have a lot of trouble with: I'll watch a show and then beat myself up for it and feel worse than when I started! I'll keep working on it, but also try to differentiate my me-time like you talked about. Thank you!!

I absolutely love you and all the things you do to help us make the most of our lives. At the beginning of 2018 I started seriously looking for ways to improve my life and eliminate excuses for why my life wasn't making me happy. I decided to finally DO something to make my life one that I was happy in. So I did, and shortly after making that decision I found you. I cannot express how thankful I am for your work and encouragement! When you asked what we do to get through motivational lulls, my first thought immediately went to listening to you! Funny- I’m doing laundry as I listen to this! I have BIG trouble with this concept, and every time it helps to look for answers in other sources, like you mentioned. Example, reading Crushing It (on your recommendation, actually) got me considering a new direction for action with my KZbin channel. I’m also writing a self-help book, and sharing my ideas with friend who I was on vacation with recently helped me see it from a different angle, which gets ideas turning again. Again, I’m no black belt with this issue, procrastination rite hit me HARD, so thanks for making a video on it!

I used to feel massively guilty about taking any time for myself because it meant that I wasn't working on my writing career or building the law firm or taking care of the house. However, I also know that it is essential. So I completely agree that it's best not to make yourself feel guilty for resting and relaxing. The book club sounds great too! I'm getting used to Instagram so I will be sure to follow you. Thanks for the good advice as usual. I always look forward to your videos.

I'm really glad that you didn't just say "just do it even if you're not motivated". A lot of self help community insists that motivation is sh*t and you just have to do things even if you don't feel like it. And according to them, by forcing ourselves to do it, we'll just start to feel like it. I see their point, but it's not that simple. The need for relaxation, or healthy procrastination, writing down things and still stimulating your mind etc, these are things I discovered myself and they really kind of work. Anyway, let me continue watching the vid. I'm only 5 mins into it. :D

I am one of those people who have ideas, but never pursue them or quit rather early on. To be fair, I have depression and made a major life change last year (moving out of a bad living situation, and now living on my own for the first time in my life) so I should probably cut myself some slack. Still, I always seem to be jealous of the people who achieve so much, even though I am happy for them too. I just feel like I'm insanely slow. Something that is helping me now is remembering that, while some people seem to be doing so much more than me, they didn't come from where I did, and they're not going where I am headed. Our paths may intersect, but no two are the same. Also, congrats on getting close to 200k, and I hope you arrive there soon :)

I struggle with this a lot and I fall into the excessive bingewatching category. When I'm unmotivated it's usually because I feel guilty for not doing things and instead of just doing the things I try to deaden my brain with noise. I'm trying to climb out of it though and this video was amazing to hear. One thing that I started doing a few weeks ago and that I want to get back into is analyzing why I'm trying to drown out my brain through bingewatching. Usually it's guilt for not doing something and if I take that moment and think about it I can immediately feel the guilt and what it relates to. So what I try to do when I notice this is just do one thing that I feel guilty about not doing. So if I'm dreading a phone call amid a bunch of chores and messages and tasks, then I'll just pick out this one thing, do the phone call, and immediately feel better. I get a happy rush for just doing one small thing, which then makes working off the rest of my guilt much easier. This may seem really simple to some people but it took me a while to figure it out and I'm still working on making this a constant mentality.

When I'm less motivated I watch your videos. You are really inspirational and thanks for all the effort to make this video. sometimes we just watch videos and comment and then watch another video but we never say thank you to motivate the people who make the videos. Thanks, Amy Schmittauer landino for making this video .

My go to re-motivator is to grab my phone or computer and pull up a really good TEDTalk and a healthy snack (my favorites are butter-alternative popcorn, or tortilla chips with fresh salsa). It's a nice short little break for my brain from the work, and yet is still semi-productive (depending on the talk). I usually bounce back and am ready to work afterward. If that doesn't work, getting in some housework while I dance around to my favorite songs really seems to help too.

So today was one of these days for me and is actually what precipitated finding your channel! Literally, last night I deleted the Instagram app from my phone until I get 100 videos on this channel -- hope the book club is going well so I can join in when I hop back on!

YES! I haven't done watching this video but I totally agree!!! Sometimes, my body tells me that I'm tired. I listen to it. I don't listen to my calendar, I know what needs to be done but I do it when my body says it's ready! I've asked myself sometimes like - are you eating because you're hungry or are you eating because you've scheduled it on the phone?

This may sound strange or not, but I do yoga. It's not a hard workout, but it gets my blood pumping. Afterward, I feel motivated to get things done. It's a new find. I haven't been doing it long, but I'm really enjoying it.

Amy, thank you so much for this video! ✨ When I’m less motivated I usually stop doing a task or something else and just take 5-10 minutes to relax and listen to motivational music (or I think podcasts, it’s great idea!). 🔥 And your thoughts about monthly book reviews on Instagram are definitely amazing! 😌 So I’m looking forward to the 1st book you are gonna advice. Thank you for this video again! 🙏🏼

Can I follow up on the calendar blocking? I've always done the color codes but the idea of creating separate calendars for types of tasks never occurred to me until I watched your video, and it eliminates like 3 steps and is amazing! And the time cubes are amazing! I've been doing 10-minute free writes and its so great to not be distracted by a big timer or phone right in front of me. It also helped me jam out a long music arrangement in only an hour and a half! YES! Thank you for your wonderful insights as always. :)

Yesss! The separate calendars thing was SUCH a timesaving tip - and it makes calendar blocking so much easier and enjoyable now.

SeeKaysee Hi, I'm trying to figure out the separate calenders tip. Are you using Google calendar? Any advice on what you did?
