The early stage when you’re exploring the canvas, before landing on anything solid, is really important, and left out of 99% of art videos. Thank you very much for going into it. Every video or discussion seems to be about execution and rendering after you’ve already landed on a clear concept. Would love to see more content on this important and neglected beginning.
@angrymikko3 жыл бұрын
I understand why painting videos on youtube are like that. The retention for the sketching part is just always worse than the polish segment. There's really no point in making an edit emphasize the beginning if you know what it does to one's channel. Some have been a bit surprised about how relieved I am when posting those hours-long uncut versions lately. It's just nice to let people see the building blocks without skipping over it or worrying about the graphs. Most importantly they help me feel less guilty about presenting the painting process in a way that on video looks much faster and easier than it is in practice. Art like this is not for the impatient even if the platform of yt is better suited for fast content. I don't want anyone to start making a painting and expect immediate desired results. If I'm the cause of that disappointment then I'm not doing my job well with these videos I'm making.
@RichardX223 жыл бұрын
@@angrymikko I think you're doing great showing it, and it's a big differentiator. Your channel is the only channel which doesn't completely gloss over all of the early stages, you're doing a big public service. I would wager that the early stage design process is the biggest thing holding most young artists back. Any intermediate artist can polish a picture if they spend enough time with it, but landing on a design worth polishing is really hard if you've never seen it done, and don't understand how loose the process is, or that it's going to spend a long time being "ugly" before you jump in to render it. And if you don't work out a bunch of the design problems in that early phase, it's going to be very hard to render it in the first place. Such a huge topic, so again, thank you.

the trees give the whole design such an energetic and dynamic feel ! The last days I couldn't really get in the right mood to paint (because right now university keeps me quite busy with the exams), but tomorrow I got my last one for this semester, and after that I won't be doing anything but painting for some days - and I'm pretty sure in that process I will also travel with an airship for some time - this video (and the livestream) really motivated and inspired me to do so ^.^ flying sure must be fun !
@angrymikko3 жыл бұрын
This will definitely not be my last airship. I hope your exams went well. I always try to motivate myself through crunch times by having something to look forward to. Right now that thing is probably the new monster hunter that will be out after my current sponsored videos are all done and sent for review. I also want to find a way to do quicker paintings just for fun but I still haven't figured out a way to do that as I'm sure most people expect me to document every painting process. Not yet sure what that could be but I think it's important to keep my relationship with my art good even if this channel is slowly turning into a big part of my freelance work.
@tollestoertchen3 жыл бұрын
my exams went well - at least I think so, still waiting for the results :D I think having something to look forward to is indeed the healthiest way to get through the more stressful times :D I can only speak for myself here, but if you do faster paintings just for yourself and don't use every piece of art for a video, I wouldn't be "mad" about it or expect you to document every painting's process - as you said, in the end the main goal should be to have a healthy relationship to your art! By the way, I just started working on my entry for your challenge, I finally know what it's gonna be ^.^ the text in the post where I explain, why it's my comfortzone might get quite long, I can already tell :'D It's kinda funny, I wanna add, how often the #artfromcomfortzone tag gets used now on instagram, even if many of those don't seem to take part in the challenge.. before it didn't get used at all, if I'm not mistaken :'D It's kind of understandable when people want other people to see their art, so I don't wanna be to rude about it, but sometimes it's a bit "annoying" when I want to read the text of an entry and click on the post, just to find out there is none .. am I too harsh about that ? ^^''

@@angrymikko I will probably sing your praises on every video I can. You got me back in to art after over 10 years when I found your pink art is my real home video. I don’t want it to be a career or income. I just want to make beautiful things to put on my walls and share them with others. The way you talk about art is motivating, it becomes accessible and the critic in my head shuts up and lets me paint. I’m 37 and for the first time I don’t let that negative voice hold me back and I owe that to the content you make. I sincerely appreciate that.

Hello @angrymiko. I love to see your digital painting. It's so beautiful. To watch the process you are taking in a real time, how you show us the viewer from the scratch, and then the explanation on what you are doing are giving me a new insight on drawing and painting digitally. If you don't mind I have questions for you to answer. I've got two questions here: 1. I notice that you do not start your drawing by using lines but colours. That's so cool. Do you have any suggestion for people like me who want to learn digi paint the way like you do? I see there is a freedom in using the colours. 2. Still regarding to question no.1, how do you pick your colours? Do you start it from thinking of the mood first or something else? 3. I always wonder when I see people drawing on Ipad or Cyntiq. They rest their palm on the Ipad but some are not. What about you? If you also do, which is to rest your palm on the screen when you draw and it doesn't give any effect (if you know what I mean), how is that possible? I have Ipad Air 2 that doesn't come with a stylus. I have do the order (setting) that will allow me to use the stylus I bought from Adonit. The stylus is proven compatible with Ipad Air 2. But I have a habit to rest my palm on a solid surface when I draw, even with pencil on paper. So I have troubled when I rest my palm on the Ipad. May I have your word for this? Thank you for your time reading this comment. Appreciate for your answers.

1.paint the way that you like to paint and you’ll get better at that method. 2. I like making palettes. Several tutorials on my channel on how to make one. Sometimes I just wing it by what the piece needs. 3.my palm is on the screen because palm rejection is pretty much flawless on iPad these days. 3rd party stylii left the iOS platform so I wouldn’t recommend any of them as the lack of software support will render them useless in the near future.

Mikko, do u get any shoulder pain when u draw?? IF not, do u know any ways to avoid shoulder pain? U drew that painting for more than 8 hours so i'm really curious if u had any shoulder pains. For me, I can barely draw for 6 hours and I will have to take short breaks for my shoulder pain in between those 6 hours.
@angrymikko3 жыл бұрын
First of all: DO NOT paint in the position that I am. If there would be any other possible angle to shoot what I’m painting I would switch right away. Having the tablet on the table is not ergonomic. If I wasn’t making videos I’d just curl up into a ball on the couch with my iPad. Since I am painting this way for yt (which I absolutely do not recommend) there are a few things that I do that minimise the risk of injury. I use a standing desk to switch between sitting and standing. I have a marker line on the wall to keep the table on the right height on both positions. Standing desks can be risky if you accidentally adjust them to wrong height. Also for days when you have a long day of painting I recommend planning an hour of exercise somewhere in between the painting sessions. Not moving all day is a sure way to injure yourself. Obviously I’m not a personal trainer but for myself I’ve noticed that when I have moves that help my core, it’s generally easier to keep a good posture. Nothing fancy just your basic deadlift, bench, lateral pull down and running. This is not a quick sexy tip to avoid shoulder pain but when I first started painting 8hrs/day for a living (about 16years ago) I got immediate shoulder and arm pains. I was forced to either find a way to stop them or find another job. Keeping your body functioning is part of the job of being an artist there’s just no way around it and it’s something that I recommend taking seriously. Especially if you’re running into problems already then it’s time to start looking into different ways to paint and avoid making it worse.
