Yeah. I've worked in various culinary settings during my career and come from a foodie family. That doesn't seem like an alarming amount of cheese to buy to me either, but it is a lot for one person (even a few people!) -especially someone who's not intending to order that much cheese. Having been unknowingly ADHD all my life (treated for depression) and friends who say “but you are successful”, I clearly have had to have a lifestyle I created to be able to succeed. Example: Went back to college at 50 after being laid off from 19 year career job. Recorded all lectures (with permission) so I could focus on lecture and listen to recording to take notes later. The list is big by the time you’re 62🤷🏻‍♀️😁 Thanks for keeping it real. I send people your way often❤️

I've always worried about everything because deep down I know that it is impossible for me to enjoy life without inevitably making a careless mistake or impulsive decision that will fuck everything up and then I'll feel shit about myself for ages (forever really). But you've just presented me with the idea that I can just try my best and when I inevitably mess up, I can just... forgive myself, accept it and laugh about it? I'm honestly still trying to get my head around it but thank you for giving me this idea. Lastly, not judging or anything, but I would have eaten all that cheese in like 2 days.

I lived in Italy for a couple years and it took me a while to figure out what hg was. Confusingly, in Italian "hecto" becomes "etto", making the abbreviation even less obvious. Once you inderstand that a hectogram=100 g, it's actually a really convenient unit roughly equal to a small snack of food.

Oh well, that story started as one of my nightmares. So glad you made it to the bus. 😊 And that Danny had your back and took it all with humor … and you too. ❤️ Give Danny a big hug, please. 🤗 “Fun” story that happened to me: In Japan, with a group of students, we were about to take the bullet train on the way back from a place up North. On the train we had a couple of minutes, so my fellow students jumped off the train to get packaged sweets from a sales cart directly in front of the train doors. I didn’t want to take the risk, but my appetite got the better of me and I jumped out last … bought my sweets … turned around … and the train doors closed directly in front of me and the train left. … 😳 Needless to say that bullet trains try to be punctual to a few seconds, so it wouldn’t stop. The rest is a blur for me. I only remember somehow explaining things to the station attendant in broken Japanese. They contacted the train, and my folks got to hear of it and took care of my stuff. So I was on the next train, without jacket or backpack or anything (except for my wallet and the sweets 😅), and caught up with them in Tokyo. 🤦‍♂️ 🚊 😮‍💨

This is actually a really excellent travel hack. I thought it was going to be something like 'oh I brought cheese and was prepared so when I got hungry it helped' or something. And those hacks for doing prep work to make stuff easier on yourself certainly have their place! But that the hack was literally just 'don't be down on yourself when you experience ADHD symptoms even when it's a ✨special occasion✨' is not something I hear or think of a lot. I never realized how often I expect my brain to behave neurotypical just because there's some kind of event. Like 'oh well I'll just stop getting autism induced sensory overload at this party, the social events which have the express purpose of existing so that you have fun there, and put myself under large amounts of stress to hide that I'm uncomfortable so everyone else can have a good time' rather than... making accommodations for myself and not judging myself if I need to step away from the party for a few minutes to decompress or go with some friends to a quieter section of it.

I love this take! ❤ To add: it was a touristy area, and hearing her misleading response to your polite question, I’m guessing the “hg” was a bit of a tourist trap. It’s def not normal to use in Europe. Also, most cheese sellers will give you an indication as they’re asking you where to cut it off. And it’s very normal to not know the exact kg and communicate through depicting the desired size. Long story short: not your fault, I would have been confused too. Reminds me of the time I went to a timeshare with my grandma. She possibly has high functioning ADHD but is a Heart at the very least. Knowing it had a kitchen, I brought my cast iron skillet, some cooking supplies, and got $35 in groceries (mostly fresh meat and produce) to feed me for 4 days. I was so happy with myself for planning all the things and helping make the trip enjoyable for both of us. Well, on the second to last day, I oiled the pan and set it on the stove to season it... And forgot I left the burner on. As soon as I smelled it in the bathroom, I knew what had happened. The pan was superheated and smoking like crazy. I yanked it off the burner and had to open all the windows. The room was hazy for the next 3 hours and smelled like canola oil for the rest of my stay. Instead of freaking out that I could have burned down the timeshare, my sweet grandma just sat back and watched the ADHD comedy show without an ounce of judgement. 😂

This is beautiful, I love it 😂 It's easily done and hey, at least you like cheese! I've learned so much about working with my brain and not beating myself up from your channel. The stories you tell from your own experiences have been so important to me since I was diagnosed a couple of years ago. To watch you crying with laughter while telling this story made me so happy to know you were giving yourself some grace 💜

Ugh this gets me. No ADHD but as someone who remembers SO MANY flaws constantly being pointed out and many an outing/vacation ruined because of misunderstandings...this hits home. Grace is pretty much always the best response (for ourselves & others).

My latest ADHD travel incident was that I had two drawers of clothes I’d worn - ones to be washed, and ones I could wear again. A week after getting back, I couldn’t find a couple of my favorite things, and realized (after assuming for a couple days they’d show up after I did more laundry) that the “to be washed” drawer never made it to my suitcase 😢. Instead of beating myself up like I used to though, I let myself mourn the loss of the clothes (and the money to replace them), and reminded myself “I have ADHD. Things like this will happen sometimes.” Of course next trip I was paranoid 😂

Thank you for this funny and relatable story! As a Dutch person (we idolize cheese), maybe I have al tip what to do with the remainder of the cheese: maybe you can use some of it to make cheese fondue(it's basically a lot of molten cheeses and you can dip bread or other things in it)?

I have only recently discovered that I have ADHD. Watching this video made me realize or remember, the many times that I was with my ex-husband and I would make impulsive decisions or lose track of time or do other small ADHD things, and instead of the moment, being one of understanding, it turned into a moment of shame for me. Thank you for this video and helping me get one step closer to healing.

This was the greatest story! I love the fact that you can laugh about it - that you were brave enough to try to order in Italian (without resorting to English like I would have if I would have ever tried to speak another language) and the big one - that you could take the cheese home! All I could think of was how much money's worth of cheese you would have to throw out (both coz it takes a long time to get to Australia so it would go off and because I'm assuming our quarantine wouldn't let us bring it into the country). I'm so happy you could take it home with you. Also - as someone who uses the metric system I had NEVER heard of hg (hectograms according to google) before.

I live in Britain (which _mostly_ uses metric measurements but not always) and I have never heard of a hectogram. I would've assumed it was kg too! But since I know a kg would be a lot (2.2lbs) I'd just have stood there working out how to order in 100g's worth...

5 minutes early to the meet up point would be me rushing in absolute panic because I was positive we would be late and miss that bus. I can't enjoy timed outings like that because I'd do nothing but obsess over how much time we had left to make it to the 'meet up location' and I'd focus on NOTHING ELSE but the idea of being late.

In Canada, cheese and other deli items are usually price per 100g - which is a hectogram - but i’ve never seen it written as hg. Even most packaged grocery items usually show the unit price in tiny print - price per 100g or 100ml. So you can check whether the big package is a better deal. (Maybe this is why it always takes me at least an hour for groceries)

I didn’t know until I had gotten back to where I was staying that I had a large wedge of Parmesan! It was good, but there is only so much one can do with Parmesan! 😂

I am so glad that you are able to laugh about that cheese incident. And I admit to having a good laugh myself. But I also learned something new to look out for if and when I travel to other countries here in Europe. As others have already pointed out, the German practice is a bit more obvious in the labeling using “€/100g” and “€/kg”. But even so, with my ADHD, it takes a considerable amount of energy while shopping to make sure I move the decimal point correctly when comparing prices.

German here. Never heard of hecto gram before 🤣 that would be 100g (or 100gr) in Germany. Hope that feels you a bit better, I would have thought it was 1kg as well ❤ (btw. I am the kind of person that needs to plan everything myself because I can't trust others to not forget something important 😬 I compensate a lot of my forgetfulness with ocd)
