Finally someone like me that treats music as an outlet of the subconscious mind. Play your soul in the moment. Very different from composed music, which works too but in the other direction. Composition = Music causing feeling / Improvisation = feelings causing music. You can compose great music while feeling nothing and doing maths and you can break all the rules and create once in a lifetime performance music by letting your soul play whatever it wants.

Dear Dave. When I discovered your channel ,you had 44000 followers, After just a few months you're up to more then 47000. In fact the copyright shit in someway pushed you to concentrate more on your own music and realise how we people love it. Your lessons were absolutely great but your playing is outstanding probably because of that deep honesty, true love and total dedication. Every time you play you fill up more then a huge bar and all your followers gathered together are a stadium. The main stream medias are so poor in there offer! Dave guys like you on internet are the future, the survival of human spirituality over the consumption society. Pity we can't just all join you one day for real. Take a rest our medicine and take care of yourself. We need you Mr Simpson !!!

Dave, you are aspirational and inspirational in equal measures. I can only speak for myself, although I hope other viewers feel the same, but I would love to be able to play as well as you, even half as good would do me! Listening to your stuff also drives me to pick up the guitar even if it ends in disappointment in that I can't replicate what you've done. We all know how playing/learning the guitar can be a double-edged sword with both highs and lows but we stick to it - the dream never dies. To the king of improv, I salute you!

All very good Dave and I will take very close note of your advice and teaching but I am afraid their is one thing lacking that cannot be taught - your genius and improvisational skill. You can string an extended and coherent jam over a period of minutes that I have heard very few guitarists do over many decades of listening to bands. Hendrix, Clapton, Page and a few others had this talent but you stand out as the best of this era. Not only that but you are still improving ! Awesome does not do it justice or indeed stupendously brilliant. You are the man.

This was a very special video for me because I always wanted to see your process for intro's and untitled's. Love how it's almost spiritual. Like you are guided in a certain direction and don't fight it, as you obviously know by now that it works for you. I've heard so many musicians ,from interviews or reading books, say that they feel they are just a vessel for the music and it's like it comes from a higher place. That may sound silly to some...but my best talent is probably writing songs on an acoustic guitar, and I often wonder where the melody, and lyrics come from. Like we snatch them from the air? But I really like how you follow the feelings you get when putting it all together. Another reason I love this video is because I'm about to buy a looper pedal.....and I remember you having a red boss one and now you have the Ditto. But I've seen a smaller Ditto....whats the difference. And I would like a looper with drums or a cheap pedal that can give me drums but is simple to use. Thank you so much for all you do with this channel, It means so much to all of us who watch you. Stay strong my friend. I've just ordered a "Good Gravy" t-shirt to get the word out, about the best guitarist on YT :)

I've never had a boss looper but they are awesome pedals. The only difference between the small ditto and the X2 is the X2 has the ability to half time things and send things in the reverse. The small one doesn't.Thank you very much. : )

I work in a similar way. Only I have to record the drum pattern first to my DAW and then jam over it with chords and then play the solo. But the outcome is well below your quality. I have only recently learned to play solo really a lot and visualized the blues pentatonic for all keys over the entire fretboard. I am still working on the in-between notes and other fine stuff so it doesnt get to boring. But your advice and your playing is a step closer for me. Thank you.

Apart from everything Dave says here, one thing this video shows is you have to be a reasonably proficient rhythm player to be a good soloist. The advantage of a looper and laying down your own rhythm is you know when the chord changes are coming, you played 'em. Question Dave.. Do you find you play the next note the music wants, regardless of scales? Often you'll be playing within a scale, pentatonic maybe, but i often find i hit a note outside the scale, or even switching to a slightly different scale...sometimes i'll switch from minor pentatonic to the minor scale..or maybe into a more major sound..depending on what i'm playing over. If i hit a wrong note the "right" one is usually a fret above or below more often than not. I was told moons ago, learn the theory, or at least as much as you need, ( as i mainly play blues stuff i just use blues type chords a lot of the time anyway.Not always but mostly) and when you've learned it...forget it. In other words learn the theory but don't become a slave to it. I also find i use single notes, double stops and triads a lot of the time for soloing. How's it go for you, or are you even that aware exactly what you do..do? I'm not a lot of the time.
@SuperDooDoo933 жыл бұрын
When running the Looper in the effects loop I'm still not sure how to run the cables. Is the Looper just simply plugged into the effects loop without the guitar being plugged into it like it is with the other pedals? Sorry for the dumb question I'm still learning.

Thanks DaveThis is a great lesson, it really brought it home for me! My question is: after you lay down the intro jam and you start to solo over it, are you playing pentatonic positions 1 thur 5 or chord tones or both? Thanks again!
