Shifting manually forces the solenoids to move and forces fluid through the various passages and check valves. It can bring a transmission back to life if you have changed the fluid after the transmission had been neglected and the service interval exceeded. It's worth a try because sometimes it works.
@genesdx11 жыл бұрын
FYI its rarely a clutch pack.... its always the pressure regulator valves being stuck due to poor maintenance. Probably slams in reverse too? ERIC.... i can bet your lock-up, shift and linear solenoids filters are clogged for this transmission. Clean them and i bet it will start shifting like normal. If its cleaned and still having problems, take it apart and polish the valve bores and replace all clutch packs for a successful rebuild

What was the symptoms of the transmission going out? Was it a 3800 engine? I have a '99 Grand Prix GT 3.8 and the transmission is doing funny things once in a while; slipping for a slight second and periodically shifting at weird times or the engine is revving higher than it seems it should maybe because it didn't shift. I think some of the teeth in the gears have worn away. 173,000 miles.

My dad has a 97 civic Auto transmission and he likes to try and shift the gears himself sometimes because the transmission going up hills and stuff is not responsive sometimes. Plus my dad is a manual transmission kinda guy anyway. I was going home with him and exactly what ETCG said happened the transmission locked up and we came to a complete unexpected emergency stop from about 35 mph. SO BE CAREFUL!!!!

You are actually right about the seating position. I have driven plenty of vans and pickup different clutch stiffness (hard and soft). And that time I was able to feel those stiff very well. But recently I bought a car which has the hardest clutch ever but because of its seating position I haven't felt any pain even in traffic. Driving those vans and pickups after driving the car made me realize the difference in the clutch stiffness.

Try inspecting and cleaning the small screens that are located in line and under the shift solenoids. Two on top and 2 on the front of the transmission. You may need to remove the starter to access one of the ones on the front. If you find clogging you may have solved your erratic, clunking or non shifting tranny problems. As this video evidences its probably not the clutch packs, its more likely that the fluid redirected by the shift solenoids can't do its job because clogged screens are blocking it.
@jmoore47887 жыл бұрын
The screens got plugged by clutchpack material. There is no way around a cracked clutch drum. You also, cannot get a replacement part. If someone sells a rebuilt transmission there is no way of knowing the drum is bad until the transmission proves itself.

When my Odyssey's transmission started to fail in 2008, with a 144,000 miles, it ran fine everyday as long as I drove it under a half an hour. If I drove it four 40 minutes, it would start to act up. This gave me a month and a half to financially prepare for a transmission replacement, while still driving the car. Then, with the 2008 Bush/Pelosi tax rebate, I had $1,800 to put towards a Genuine Honda Rebuild Transmission, done at the dealership. I have 220k on the van now. I change the transmission fluid twice a year because the vehicle only lets me drain and replace three of the nine quarts of fluid, with each transmission fluid change. Thanks for producing and sharing your video.

Hi Eric, my 2000 Odyssey is at 260K with the same transmission. Yes, the clutches at 2nd gear are worn out and it has to be nursed. We drive it very carefully in town and even my sons have been trained to use it. It is at the end of use and heading for donation this Summer. I've consulted with a local very reputable Honda transmission expert, small business, and he points out that ATF change at 30K is key. The Honda design has a network of filters along the network of the fluid path, flushing is not an option. The ATF coolant loop was installed at 30K, with the towing hitch, which is one of the reasons this transmission has lasted this long. Careful monitoring and change of the ATF is another reason. Thanks for your safety tip.

This happened with my 2006 Odyssey. I had transmission rebuilt and was given a two year warranty on the rebuild. Guess my questions would be: 1. Is there any recourse from Honda, if this is a known problem (I think there was a recall but not for 2006?) and 2. Now 1 1/2 years into my two year warranty--since the rebuild, it never felt the same as before, but worked. Should I expect the transmission to fail again shortly after the end of the warranty? Hard to trust any car again after this happened--have tiny touch of PTSD from its failing on the road. Also, all the moms I know still think Odyssey is oh so reliable, nothing I say can persuade them otherwise--why isnt this problem more generally known, and what other makers do we need to look out for with this issue?

Just fyi, the reason his transmission failed was not because of clutches, it was because he had stuck valves. Most likely in the accumulator or valve bodies. Drill the line to converter charge or buy the sonnax valve

I thought so too. I'd assume anything with a computer would be safe. For example, I believe that on any vehicle with a computer, if you shift into reverse or park at more than 10 mph, it stays in neutral and lights up the dashboard like a christmas tree, but nothing breaks. I wonder what would happen to an older one.

My 2003 pilot has 216k miles. I bypassed the poor excuse for a heat exchanger that runs through the bottom of the radiator and installed a dedicated external transmission fluid cooler. Change fluid and filter first at the first sign of trouble. (Sludge in the valve body) I used to have a 1993 Vic with an AODE and it shuddered and slipped during the 2-3 shift. I used to put WYNN's ANTI-SHUDDER in the fluid and this made it go away for about a year but alas they stopped selling it. I would accelerate to whatever speed I wanted to go in by pushing hard on the gas pedal and lifting my foot to force a fast easy 2-3 shift and set the cruise. this worked for 7 years until I got rid of it again with some GUNK TRANS-MEDIC. It worked once for a year also. once the frame broke on the vic I purchased a 1994 T-bird with the same engine and 4W70 trans. It also had slipping issues. So I dropped the trans out of the vic and took it apart to see what the problem was. there was a substance that looked like mayonnaise in the valve body. everything else looked perfect. So I bought a 1Liter bottle of the GUNK TRANS-MEDIC and 10L of ATF and I drained the pan and the converter. Then I changed the filter refilled the trans. No more slipping.

Any recommendations for a P0740 code? My dads 2003 Odyssey won’t pass inspection. Was told from a few mechanics the trans is shot. It one shifts hard from 1st to 2nd. Saw some videos lately. The videos are say to change solenoids. Think this will solve the problem? I know that’s a loaded question.
@milwaukeebiker7 жыл бұрын
Obviously if it works sometimes that would or should have given you a clue as to it not being a problem with worn clutches. Worn off clutch material will not reappear at times to engage and then disappear and not engage. Therefore you need a scan tool that will tell you if the shift solenoids are getting the right signal from the TCM at the right time and if they are then it would most likely be a shift solenoid or solenoid circuit / fluid flow issue. Fairly elementary electronically shifted auto trans diagnostics. .
@milwaukeebiker7 жыл бұрын
I don't doubt that it may have needed 2nd gear clutches, but what usually happens is the clutch material ends up in the solenoid screens. And that is the only thing good about Hondas is that the shift solenoids/screens are external.
@keefewatson95556 жыл бұрын
I know for my 2004 Odyssey (which is the same V6 paired with a very similar 5 speed with the same problems) driving in 1st or 2nd uses only the respective gear. Driving in D3 uses 1-3, and driving in D uses 1-5. So, it's not necessary to start in 1. Start in 2 from a stop (sure, the acceleration won't be the same) and then ease into D3 when it's time, and only when you'll actually be needing 3rd gear (as in, you are accelerating and not just going 25mph). I do this on a cold engine to avoid the hard shifts which seem to be burdensome on the car. And, I don't shift into R on a cold engine since it tends to "clunk." These are all precautionary measures I take to make it last -- it has never slipped or failed. 159,000 miles and ATF changed every 15,000 since 100,000.
@keefewatson95556 жыл бұрын
Seriously, start in 2nd gear. Without dealing with engine speed and wheel speed, it should start in 2nd gear just find unless 2nd is totally shredded.

After the car cools down, transmission will shift normally until it heats up, 2005 and up transmissions are better and last about 240K miles, my 2005 van about 400k miles on it lots of towing, Texas heat and stop and go traffic, same engine, 2nd transmission and countless engine mounts. That is why a transmission cooler is critical for hot climate and honda cars, I install them on any honda I buy from now on.

Automatics are just a nice convenience. I know how to drive manual, and it's advantageous at times, but in stop-and-go traffic (which is what I experience 80% of the miles I drive) a manual is a pain in the neck. And these days with CVTs and new automatics with 6 gears or more the fuel economy is actually better than a manual.
@Lycras11 жыл бұрын
Well so the clutches where good afterall. I would go for solenoids or connections to them from electronic module. Sometimes works,sometimes doesn't seems like electrical problem with solenoids. Scan them for abnormal resistance or inductance if you have the gear for that. I think you need to replace 2nd gear solenoid or electrical connection or maybe the electronic module. The EM can be fixed but without schematic,hard thing to do even using logic analyser.
@shepd312 жыл бұрын
More complicated, and the fuel efficiency benefit is around 15%. When gas prices are low, as they are in the US, people don't worry about 15% better fuel economy. Also, almost all the intersections in North America are either 4-way stops or traffic lights. Those are the most difficult situations (especially with a hill) for a manual transmission. Most intersections in the UK are roundabouts, which, when not too busy, allow you to just slow down instead of stop dead.

@Seek546487 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if you have fixed tho issue or not but none has been doing the same thing. there are several things you can do to resolve this. the trans shift solenoid has three screens in it that tend to get dirty and not let fluid through. Pull the solenoid and clean them. Or there is a each dude that is related to the tcs if that is blown replace it. If those fail then Its usually the solenoid itself. the solenoid is around $340 but worth it. If all else fails then the damage has already been done and the trans will need rebuilt like you stated. By I would start with those. This was a big issue with the honda trans and and easy fix without a rebuild if you catch it early. I k ow this video is old but maybe some one will see this that is having this issue and it will save them a headache and a pricey and unnecessary repair.

I have an 04 odyssey and the transmission in around 02 were recalled and a transmission fluid line was installed over the fluid fill bolt which get fluid to the problematic 2nd gear that sits up higherger and help stop breakdowns. With poor service the filters become more clogged and limits fluid flow=heat and your transmission is on its way out. Dirty clogged shift solenoids is also a major no no.

I got 1 sitting in my drive way right now same issue. Where did you buy the rebuild kit for yours? I've never rebuild a transmission before I have many many motors of all sizes even v10 n 12s and damn northstar 🤬. Wondering since I have much experience in pretty much all aspects of vehicle repair. Besides just replacing one and filter and fluid flushes etc how difficult is the rebuild? Also where you got your Honda ATF or what you used instead. It's only has 95k on it damn shame it just sitting there rotting away I only paid 1500 for it. Everything else works as it should

Hi Eric , I am puzzled. I now have a 2005 Acura MDX bdka transmission. The pump for pushing the tranny fluid isn’t working. What’s wrong do you think ? I was trying to give a flush and no go. What’s wrong ?

I have a 2004 Honda Odyssey with 183000 miles on it would you recommend a transmission drain with transmission filter change....

Would you be so kind to answer me a question. I have a 2004 Saturn Vue that comes with a Honda 3.5 engine. My issue is that when the car is doing somewhere 30-40 MPH, if I am easy on the gas, you can feel a vibration on the transmission, Only when easy on the gas. If I do step on the gas hard, then I don't feel that vibration. at times I have felted at higher speeds but no as bad as when doing 3-40. I think this one of those they used on the Odyssey before 2005 that I hear had problems. Any idea what can cause that vibration? feels as if something is loose and there is jello in there... LOL. That is the feeling.. Can you help me?

2003 oddy bought used at 105 Kmil with exactly the same problem. I've found A SIMPLE TRICK to drive it and put 30,000 more miles on it. WHILE YOU DRIVING, JUST TOUCH THE BREAKS A LITTLE FOR SAFETY, SHIFT IT IN NEUTRAL (N) FOR 2-3 SECONDS THEN BACK TO DRIVE (D) POSITION. My transmition never slept on the highway yet at any speed. It only happens when i"m turning sharp to the RIGHT (never to the LEFT) at low speeds, typically after an intersection or if I have to do a SHORT LEFT THEN RIGHT. So, is something that moves from it's place in that sharp turns or, the trans-fluid not absorbed for shifting correctly. Please let me know what can be the actual cause. Thanks.

Meh, it's always good to have more than one perspective on how to do a job. Get all the information that you can, then approach a problem.

My 2003 works fine for a minute or two then seems like it's in neutral. I think they call it a false neutral. I wish the hell I could figure it out! I'm guessing it's a solenoid. But which one?

Hey guy's I have a question...my 2005 honda odessey is revving up to about 4000rpm before shifting and then when it shifts it shifts hard any ideas??
@CharlesP200912 жыл бұрын
Well I didn't mean kill as in ruin the engine, but to stall it. The front wheels locking up is definitely a dangerous situation! I've read that the repairs on those troublesome transmissions only buy you another 40,000 miles or so. Might be time to consider another vehicle!

i bought a 1999 Pontiac trans am about 3 weeks ago,guy said transmission went out,but it goes to 1st and 2nd gear fine but doesn't go into 3th gear,just keeps going too higher rpm in 2nd gear,maybe vss or transmission filter? when i check the transmission fluid it had nothing in it,put some transmission fluid and test drove it and still had same problem,it has a broken shift linkage, so i just have sum zip ties and sum wires for now but will that cause the problem too if the shift linkage is broken??

Eric i have a question man. I also have a Honda Odyssey 02 and i can feel the transmission shift every time. We just had it rebuilt but it still does the same. What can i do?
@desertfox202012 жыл бұрын
Well he wants to fix it because its a project and a challenge. Besides, the way Odysseys go through transmissions I'd be surprised if any salvage yard ones were even as good as this one is, let alone fully operational.

Honda definitely lacking in transmission design. No pan. No filter.

Hey Eric, do you ever watch Scotty Kilmers videos? I'm subscribed to the both of you, both have very down to earth explanations for problems. Keep up the great work!

I had problems with my trans on 2000 Odyssey and a place rebuilt it and told me there was no external filter for the transmission and told me I would have to bring it back every 15,000 and they would have to change and internal filter, inside the trans case. At 10,000 after the rebuilt it failed. I had to turn off the key and wait for 1-2mins and then start back up and go. Finally traded it.

I bought a Honda Civic 2002. But i realize that when i drive the car it takes a bit more time to change the gear while comparing with other automatic cars. Can you please tell me what would be the reason for this? to change the gear i have race the car a bit more.

My 2003 jumps out of gear in second to neutral ,depending on my speed and circumstances i will most likely shift into 2nd then 3rd to D,or at times from second to D .I've become accustomed to it ,even though it can happen 3 time a day to at times a week or 2 and no slip.Replaced the high pressure Pwr steering line the last week $157+tax(Ripped off half of the bumper bringing it up the ramps lol)Mechanic wire to the rescue! Next is the lower front LF ball joint .Eric can i replace just the ball joint or do i have to replace the entire control arm ??? from the research i have came across seems like i have to replace the whole arm but with a press is it possible or worth the time and savings $$$.

Hey Eric thanks for posting this video. I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey EX-L with the 3.5 i-V-TECH motor and I have close to 200,000 miles on it. I have been changing my Transmission fluid every 30K miles. But I'm scared that this might happen to me. Have you seen the 2005 Odyssey Transmission with issues when kept up all the maintenance ?
@lucyfoster40826 жыл бұрын
My 2006 Odyssey had a premature transmission death, so the problem wasn't solved as of then.
