You are a blessing, Louise. People should say "my great-grandma could paint this", then we might say "yes, she very well could". This is my challenge to myself, with your help. It takes life, to express life.

This was exactly what I needed to hear. (To stop trying to make my authentic art “presentable,” and also to slow down when I know I’m getting closer to what I’m trying to express). I can’t tell you how many times I have over-edited after having painted something I was actually really liking. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and process!

Had to stop to say this. The point you make about editing at 6:30 was a "cold water in the face" wake-up moment for me that I must never forget! They are two very different things, and I have been tidying up for the "viewer" rather than for the sake of the painting. It always shows, bothers me, edit more while feeling unsure & then THAT shows, and of course the passion is then lost entirely and the painting way overdone! Gonna keep that "cold water" moment handy, please may it help me!

This resonates with me, here this is, and if you like good, if not fine and I as an artist has to be willing to take all comments good , bad or indifferent!!! The problem lies with if your doing this primarily to sell, I thank the lord I don’t have that pressure! But I can imagine!

I completely agree Pat! I could see how working to only sell would be so daunting.

I have been working on improving in that regard. Nowadays I find that my best paintings are ones that are completely unedited or minimally edited. I like the 'raw' or 'energetic' feel to paintings.

I painted a piece a couple of weeks ago...first time I've put my emotions and feelings on paper. It was cathartic and beautiful. Thank you for reminding me that I don't need to edit my painting or my true self. ❤️

Good info! The more I look at these paintings the more I see in them an d like them! My imagination tells me the first one has two figures in it, a newly married couple , I see her gown, The second one i imagine people at the local pub hanging out at the bar, the 3 rd the big gray mark gives it an elephant vibe. Funny how we learn to see things in paintings when we use our imaginations Thanks for sharing. Love the color combinations in these

I love your work Louise - thank you. I enjoy painting on paper (probably more than canvas). I noticed on this clip that you mentioned you affixed the paper to a backing. Would you be able to share how you do this? I have had disasters - bubbles and non adherence, so I always end up framing behind glass. Thanks

Hit home...been trying to figure out my intention and the "why" .Hard to escape the perceived judgement of the viewer. If it were easy everyone would do it. I have been letting things appear then trying to edit with all the contrast aspects in mind. That was not enough because I have not yet figured out that underlying why.

I had a couple give me an underhanded comment at a show recently. They said my granddaughter paints and we think she would love to paint like this. I said oh wow, how old is she? Thinking she was older and a professional or emerging artist. Nope. They said she was 6 years old! 😢 Basically saying a 5 year old could do this😡

Òbviously this isn't true or they'd be entering her work there and as you say, a compliment because they can see your work is so freely painted. YOUR Opinion is the only one that matters! Lesa 🌻

Dear Louise, your art is amazing… I love it, even ordered your book. But please consider giving up the “drips”. For me it is jarring and sloppy and spoils the elegance and intentionality of your beautiful deeply moving art.
