I’ve never understood people who say you shouldn’t edit your film... It has to be edited in the scanning process, so if you’re not editing your film, you’re just letting someone else determine the colors/look of your film.

Same! People always get angry at me for it on my channel but my edits aren’t even that major from the scans. With slide film the scans are always rather different and I edit it closer to the transparency and people freak out!

This lab, the only one in my country, that stopped working, gave me really underexposed and washed out scans, so I was forced to edit them. Also, one lab, abroad, printed the photos, and didn't provide scans, I guess there was some misunderstanding at play, so I had to salcan the prints with my regular scanner and then bumped up the saturation and contrast to match the prints, which were just stunning, if I may say so myself

2 remarks on your process here: all these adjustments could be done in lightroom, including color balance with a color or luminosity mask. Instead of tweaking the skin colors making it look unnatural, you can always double click on your layer and do blend if for the reds, which in portraits is the skin. Then remove the color filter from the reds in blend if. And the skin stays untouched. Also, the spot healing tool in photoshop is more obvious than the one in lightroom for whatever reason.

the essence is good low contrast scans. i've never gotten good scans back from a lab. is it even possible to create low contrast scans like the one from captain beaney on anything else than an drum scanner? the labs i've send my film to weren't able to do so with their nortisus and frontiers

Do you scan images yourself as well? Please show that to! I don't realy understand why people prefer one film above another because of «the look» when they scan. When I scan, either the software or I change settings to get a certain look (white balance, contrast etc). I use Epson v850 and SilverFast 8 with the negafix. This does som automatic correction and I further tune the image... Then most films would look the same and lose it's caracteristics except ISO and red halation on cinestill. Would love to hear your, or others oppinion on this as well! Is there a certian way you should edit to get one film correct?

Heya! I shoot a lot of medium format film and scan myself but just wondered when/if you went about removing dust? Or if you have some magic tip on getting rid of every bit before scanning?

Charlotte Macaulay these were scanned by a lab, and therefore arrive to me with no dust. If I scanned myself, I’d do the cleanup in photoshop after lightroom

Labs normally have this special little machine which removes static from film, which allows air to remove nearly all dust
