Thanks for the way you control the advertising, David, that one thing gives you a classy edge over other channels. The comments below are well deserved. And a particular “Thank You”, across all your channels, for not begging us to subscribe all the time, that again shows class.

Very interesting video. I agree with your stance on mid roll ads, they are extremely intrusive, especially when they appear mid-sentence, or sometimes stupidly within the last minute of the video. I suspect those who leave mid roll ads enabled haven't watched their own videos. It's also nice to see your process to see how it compares to other boat-tubers. Thanks for this, and the amount of effort you put into your videos.

Very interesting video, I learned an awful lot! I've been using Sony Vegas since I was about 13 years old editing silly little KZbin videos and still use it 10 years later. I use Vegas 15 at the moment but even on a fairly high end gaming PC (i7 processor, 24GB of RAM, 1080TI graphics card and SSD's) Vegas will often lag, crash and just generally be sluggish! I've never been able to fix it but then I find it far superior to other editors so I just have to live with it! Thanks for the video!
@UKAirscape3 жыл бұрын
It's so very intuitive! The crashes etc do depend a lot on being up to date with graphics drivers etc it seems, and different versions seem to crash different amounts (I recall I skipped versions 14 and 15 and went from 13 to 16, but have since upgraded to 17 and now 18 - the latter is mostly stable but I do have to use those proxies otherwise a crash is inevitable)

An armchair editor moment: Do you use a cooling pad for the laptop (ideally with a USB fan built in)? Might make the laptop's life more comfortable and even speed up the rendering (as it wouldn't overheat as much, keeping the CPU from throttling). Also sometimes makes things more ergonomic by raising the display closer the eye level.
@UKAirscape3 жыл бұрын
I don’t have a cooling pad, no

Yes, this was very interesting to watch. I have never edited an video and thought it was easy. You just showed me. How much time and effort and dedication it takes for even one video. Your way of explaining everything was very good. However, i would've loved to see more about. The things you did with color editing. You just skipped that important part. Also, you said that the version of Vegas you use is pretty old and has some problems. Why aren't you simply upgrading to a more up to date version that doesn't have problems editing the original 4k raw footage? The answers may be simple, but i am not a editer myself haha. Happy Easter! And thanks for the interesting and informative video.

Great to see an experienced hand at the tiller! I haven't had a new camera in a long while and was wondering about buying the DJI action camera. If you don't mind, Would you say it is good for an all rounder? (as I probably wouldn't buy two cameras)
@UKAirscape3 жыл бұрын
It has superb stabilisation and a decent image outdoors but it’s hopeless for filming indoors, even if you think it’s a nice day and nice and light, the image is just grainy and horrible. It needs to be outdoors with lots and lots of light. And you’ll need to add an external mic (something like the Rode VideoMicro or Joby Wavo Mobile is cheap and fine, but you then also need DJI’s USB audio adapter in order to plug the mic in. And a little “cage” to go round the camera to give you a cold shoe to mount the mic on.

Very good video to watch. And kudos for your stand on mid roll ads. They are the most intrusive thing. I cannot understand BoatTubers with, say, 2000 subs that think mid roll ads are a good idea. It just alienates their potential fledgling audience. A channel has to be really top notch before one feels mid rolls are a tolerable price to pay to watch.
@blutey3 жыл бұрын
Thanks David. A lot of useful info there. I'm also a casual user of Sony Vegas. What happens to the proxy files at the end, after rendering? Are they automatically deleted by Vegas? Or does the user have to delete them. Where are they stored?
@UKAirscape3 жыл бұрын
They are stored in the same directory as the project (at least, they are on mine, I can’t remember if that’s down to a specific setting or just the default). You need to delete afterwards (but as I always delete the project directory after archiving, that’s never been an issue)

Excellent, David. I've always admired your audio, video, editing and storytelling skills. I edit on an ancient desktop that's near the end of its life cycle. A laptop is probably the best replacement for the desktop in terms of power and cost. But I'm afraid I won't like the laptop editing experience. (Yes, I'm old.) Obviously you're fine with it but I feel like a laptop means being hunched over with the keyboard just below the small(er) screen... any thoughts?
@UKAirscape3 жыл бұрын
The ergonomics of a laptop are not too hard to fix - raise it up, use a separate mouse etc. However, a laptop will certainly be more expensive than an equivalently powerful desktop. My main issue with the laptop is cooling, in that it gets very hot and the fans run very loudly which makes it annoying to edit with when you’re trying to balance the sound, and impossible to record into. If I had space for a bigger screen, the laptop has outputs than could feed it (but by that point you might as well have a desktop)

Very interesting video. I know what you mean about mid roll adverts. There is one KZbinr who does have long videos up to an 90 minutes and with mid rolls, but the subject is very interesting and the mid roll seem to time when they are changing between subjects. But I have just watch another KZbin 15 minutes video and I have stopped a third of the way. Due to watching 8 adverts in 7 minutes. I will now watch him from the start on my computer which has adblocker so he will get nothing. As Bigclive said adverts at the start a finish may not pay a lot but it does keep KZbin going.
