Thankyou for this video. I enjoy watching your channel but this video was particularly important for me as I have researched the history of the Clan MacFarlane. I have always wanted to have a look at the castle, on the island, but have never had the chance. I have researched the history of the Clan MacFarlane, specifically, the Battle of Tarbet Glen (1263), when local clansmen fought Norwegian invaders (popularly referred to as 'Vikings'), just prior to the Battle of Largs (1263). It is my theory that part of the Norwegian invading force dragged small boats across the isthmus from Loch Long to Loch Lomond, (Tarbet, in Gaelic) for the purpose of raiding the clan fortification on Inveruglas Isle. There would not have been a stone castle on the isle at that time (archaelogical research indicates a stone castle was there from the 14th Century) but it was likely there was a wooden fort which was probably the HQ of the clan chieftain. The clan probably would not have been known as MacFarlane, at that time, as the Laird of Arrochar and Tarbert was Gilchrist, brother of the Earl of Lennox. Gerry makes reference to the often negative legends and myths regarding the clan but the MacFarlanes/Gilchrists were the local clan and they made a stand against an invading army that was bigger and stronger - but they would not yield. Battle of Tarbet Glen would go on to inspire clan ancestors for generations after and led to the clan motto: 'This I will Defend'. For info on the archaeological survey of Inveruglas Castle follow this link: www.clanmacfarlane.org/archeology/ByYonBonnieBanks.pdf

I visited that island by accident when I did Duke of Edinburgh at school, the weather was absolutely terrible but we were glad of the rest, very interesting to see such a high quality video a number of years after I went myself. This was on day 1 of our 3 day trip down the loch North to south, and it was amazing to see how history has preserved itself on that island. Even better to hear the context from yourselves! The following night we camped on Inchconachan, further down the loch, and the weather there was simply stunning, I'd love to go back.

Just caught up with this Murray and I'm so glad I did. As an Arrochar man (but not a sea of Loch farer), I've often wondered what those islands have to offer. It is very tempting to try a hand at kayaking 🤔. Also good to see Gerry educating you to the choice of condiment for a bacon butty.. I'm sure we've had that conversation before. I suppose with the reoccurring knee problem is to find something you enjoy but doesn't add to the problem however, incredibly frustrating when it is interfering with something you love. I hope it improves soon. Thank you for sharing - Jim
