Sorry for those complaining about the context you provided. For those of us who are battling this fight, the full description of your experience provided a very cathartic, “OMG, it’s not just me” response! THANK YOU! Im 47 and have been dealing with this after every allergy flare-up and cold since middle school! I watched the video you shared and connected with Dennis and Bethany. Just last night, my husband said, “You can’t keep this up; this cough is going to kill you in another decade or two.” He went on to list all of the things I could do (doctors, diets, etc). But I went through all of that just before I met him at age 18. And, of course, he’s observed how nothing has worked over the past 30 years, so I just asked him to pray for the solution. Next morning, I searched for “cough hypnosis,” and found YOU! And then Dennis, Bethany, and Dr Weinberger!!! Truly an answer to prayers! Thank you!!!🙏❤

I found out a long time ago to stop severe excessive coughing to just HOLD a drink to your lips. Not even drink. When you hold a drink to your lips and just relax one minute your body thinks it’s getting ready to receive a drink and automatically the diaphragm relaxes. And coughing stops. Sometimes I would just sit and hold it there… but it works every time. Best trick ever for me.

I am actually relieved to hear your story as I felt I was alone in my chronic coughing history. My pattern started when I was 23 and newly stationed in San Diego at the Naval Hospital. I got sick with a sore throat and head cold that settled into my chest after a week or so and just developed into a hacking cough that lasted for weeks. I was a corpsman working in the pediatric clinic. I tried everything and finally went to sickcall and got put on several meds to no avail. Just when the docs were going to work me up for adult asthma I slowly got better. All in all, I spent about 3 months "sick" with coughing incessantly the majority of the time making me sick of myself, sick of being exhausted from coughing all day, sick of apologizing to co-workers and my husband who I kept awake all night. This pattern happened every year for decades. Thanks for letting me share. I am 66 now.

Anything related to the lungs means there's repressed grief, which is why you will see people having asthma or COPD who have never smoked, then again smoking doesn't directly cause lung issues either. We've been lied to for decades😢 an acupuncturist or holistic chiropractor, sound or energy healer is a great place to start for all healing, as doctors do not heal...

HOLY CRAP I can't believe it's working! It actually feels a lot like yoga--tapping into awareness to change something "permanent" that's actually not permanent at all. The same feeling as consciously adjusting my posture until my body learned how to assume the correct position on its own. Instead of staying up all night coughing I guess I'm gonna stay up all night focusing on this 😅 Big upgrade. Thank you!!!!!!!!

This is for something called "habit cough". This is a cough that only happens when you are awake. Doesn't matter if it is day or night. It is that it happens when you are awake. And when you sleep it stops completely. Doesn't matter if it is day or night.She also points out that she had a non-productive cough, but a dry cough and no phlegm could be expelled and her cough would get triggered every time she took a breath. Technique is by Dr. Miles Weinberger( not sure how to spell the name) Here it goes.... ready? .... The technique is called....."STOP IT!!!!" She put a link to the doctor coaching a girl how to do the technique. Basically you try your best to stop coughing and you suppress the cough by not giving in to the urge to cough. You build up to longer periods of not coughing with practice and this will give your airway a break to heal from the irritation of coughing. They suggest keeping some "BODY TEMPERATURE" drinking water by you so when you get the urge to cough (pre-cough or tickle feeling)you stop it by taking a regular sip of water. And SLOW relaxed breathing. Not a tiny one and not a large sip, but regular sip. Take slow relaxed breaths. And repeat this for longer time spans.
@Jules-740
@Jules-740 7 ай бұрын
In my humble opinion i don't know how to keep water at body temperature. I will go with room temp water, and perhaps it won't work for me for not keeping it body temp as this could be KEY(body temp h20)

Glad you have found how well cough suppression can work. I'm a speech pathologist who specializes in chronic cough due to cough hypersensitivity syndrome and I commonly treated it with a treatment called behavioral cough suppression therapy. The crux of the treatment is teaching different ways to suppress cough. Sounds like you don't need help in that area but I thought I would let you know that the raspy/glottal fry voice you mentioned you tend to do also feeds your cough (assuming you have cough hypersensitivity, which you likely due as that is the primary cause of chronic dry cough). Speaking in a glottal fry is irritating to the larynx which perpetuates cough hypersensitivity. I don't like that Dr. Weinberger calls this condition habit cough. It is cough hypersensitivity syndrome, which is much more than a habit. There is conclusive evidence that it is based on changes in both your peripheral nervous system and in your brain, which means it is not a habit. Suppressing the cough works because it stimulates your nervous system to stop being so sensitive.
@brianpratt6988

It took a while but I learned this is called Cough Hypersensitivity Syndrome as you state. I totally agree that the name Habitual Cough is miss leading and frustrating. I don’t like it. Sipping room temp water has helped me suppress the cough for up to 1-4 hours. I’m on day 4 and progress is slow. What is killing me is the laryngeal paresthesia. I can suppress the cough but the pins and needles in my throat are hard to bare. I called to make an appointment with ENT doctor and they couldn’t get me in until four weeks!

@@YouButterr u sure it’s sinus and not cerebrospinal fluid? I just recalled a story where the early Covid tests (deep into the nasal passage) caused a woman’s spinal fluid to drip continuously. Maybe worth an ask/test. I don’t know if there are multiple causes of such a thing. Maybe chronic infection/abscess could cause it too, or something else. Just speculating

This is especially important for us asthmatics (or former asthmatics). As is common for many of us, even after a cold (or any respiratory illness that leaves a congestion) goes away, the congestion itself lingers for much longer than it would in the lungs of non-asthmatics. (My pneumologist said this is typical for "asthmatic lungs" even when not experiencing asthma.) So, for us, it is far more likely that our throats will get sore from the extra coughing we do while clearing away the residual congestion. And then comes the dry cough. With this procedure, we now have a way to cut the needless irritation short and thus resume our normal lives. I've tried it, and it works; thanks so much for sharing, Gracie!

Wow Gracie! I just found you today and I really loved you ❤ and your advice as well. I will start doing it from today as I have been having phlegm build up and cough for a whole year now and didn't seem to go no matter what medications I had tried. Moderately hot salt water gargle and always sucking on a good menthol, ginger and honey lozenge whenever you feel irritation in your throat will surely help in getting rid of this condition, I have noticed. And always try to keep yourself warm during cold months especially around your chest and throat areas. Drink hot black coffee mixed with one teaspoon black pepper powder and some honey and have it atleast 2 times in a day. And lastly, try to slip in some steam inhalation too which is also great in loosening phlegm and soothing and clearing the airways. And me being a singer too, because of this, I haven't been able to use my voice properly for the last one year; and that really hurts... Hope this helps everyone. Peace out ✌️

I’ve had a tickle in my throat and chronic cough for maybe the last six years… reflux was definitely part of it, but you’re right about the loop of coughing that causes more coughing… For me, sometimes I’m in a phase where the coughing is all the time and intense (once or twice, so much that my throat froze up and I couldn’t get any air)… and then sometimes I notice I’ve gone a couple days without coughing at all… As someone who’s been through it, I appreciate all the context. I also appreciate hearing this from a musician - I play guitar and piano and want to sing along, but can’t get a few bars in without coughing. So I’m hoping this technique will help. For those looking to the comments to find out what it is, it’s basically to suppress the urge to cough with sips of water, with a concerted effort, over the span of a couple days.

it takes a lot of discipline to resist the cough. In some ways it’s painful coughing but also satisfying giving in, just think about how much you rather not have it and remember what no cough life is and fight through. The water bottle def helps. Like most of the comments, I’m having this now. I’ve never had a persistent cough before but I’m coughing so bad I’m getting a headache and coughing up a lung. Right now I’ve done 2 1 hour sessions without coughing which I didn’t think was possible. Triggers for me are conversation and laughing. So I’ve tried to limit both. Soon as I fall asleep I don’t cough at all unless I wake up for some other reason. I thought I was coughing up something but for sure feel like I’m just coughing for no reason. Hope to be better in a few days, but even just after practicing for the few hours it feels like a relief.

From the time I wake in the morning until I fall asleep at night I cough and it's really bad. My doctor started me on two different inhalers a few weeks ago to use throughout the day and right after using them I cough. Not just a minor hack but a heavy cough. As soon as you told how you stopped I began to focus on not coughing. I've gone 15 minutes now and while I feel it trying to push it's way out and it's a bit painful, I've managed to hold it down. I can't believe it! I'm not saying that I won't cough anymore but for the first time in nearly a year I have hope. Thank you! Many Blessings!!

I just wanted to Thank You for this video. This technique definitely worked! It was tough at first but I was able to stop the coughing. I did end up having bruised ribs with a possible slight fracture after my four weeks of coughing got worse. I'm still getting the urge to cough (if it runs it's typical course, I have about 2 more weeks to go) but at least I am finally able to stop it. Now I just need to work on stress and probably acid reflux to see if that will prevent the coughing from starting in the first place. I hope you are doing better and I hope you can or have found a way to stop the initial trigger. I checked out a few of your other videos and you have a beautiful voice! The instrument in your NYC live performance (first after lockdown) is unique.....I've never seen one before. Thanks again and best wishes for you!

I am a Marine Gulf War veteran who is SO STUBBORN that I paid for many cough suppressants, health drinks, etc. Colleagues at work did the look that you showed - thinking I was gravely ill - and were on the verge of sending me home. 🤕 Thanks to your sage advice, I had NOTHING to lose when EVERYTHING was in front of me. I appreciate your advice on my breathing techniques taught during Marine Corps Boot Camp. (We were introduced to keeping silent with this trick, which was used in MANY applications like SWIM QUAL (hydration), Rifle qualification, and SILENT DRILL.) I can't believe that I FORGOT this skill. I MUST be getting Dementia because of this. (Thanks, Joe Biden. UUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHH!) Actually, thank you...and bless you for giving a Marine his focus again.

some blood pressure medicines will cause an annoying cough. Also, if you have polyps in your upper nares, sinuses can cause drainage and coughing. The polyps look like wet grapes way up in your nose and sinuses. An Ear Nose and Throat doctor can diagnose this with MRI of your sinuses. I have had surgery every 10 years to remove the polyps in my sinuses. This is extreme but It helped my drainage that caused coughing. It also helped me to smell and taste better.

I was diagnosed with bronchitis in my early childhood. Every year, or 2, I would get a cough that lasted at least 2 weeks or a month. I found, in my 20s, things were not as bad as I may have caught the cough every 3 yrs or so. But, now in my 40 s again, I am catching it every year. During Covid, this was not a fun thing to have, as, you felt when you went out, a FEAR factor with everyone around you with a cough that lasted months on end, due to chronic coughing. I always felt, if I was a smoker, I would have been dead by now. Antibiotics used to clean it up within a week or less. Then puffers came, did not do that much help but it may have helped somewhat. Then I found the puffer with a pill cortisoid, worked very well if given past 5 days ( I also recommend always consulting a doctor before trying any off the counter remedies or herbal remedies as below). Lemon, Honey, Ginger, Drinks were also tried- maybe they helped a bit, but it was no silver bullet. So, this time again, I am taking a cortisoid, and a puffer, will do what the doctor said for the next 3 days or so until the prescription runs out. I am also, taking, tumeric in capsule form ( not sure if it will help either), as rumored tumeric can help perhaps. I am trying also, zinc tablet with echinacea, vitamins C and D. The result, is, I do find, I am coughing 1/5 th less than 3 days ago. But, a habitual cough starts, as I have found, after treatment sometimes the cough will linger as a cough every 20 minutes or so. I will see how this one goes this time. This cough, started out as a sore throat is it always does. Then, it kicks off a few small coughs, then goes into full cough mode, coughing every few minutes or less at times, chain coughing. So, i go see the doctor, oxygen levels at 99 %.... So, then the prescription... Alright... Where I stand now with the above treatment. I thought, in the last few years with the cough was really hanging around longer than usual, that my throat was itchy and was causing it, or phlegm was rising and causing it... I noticed, when I drank hot fluids throughout the day, the cough, would subside. Not as bad. Thanks for posting this video, as, it shows there are others who suffer the same thing that I have ( out in public, you get the looks when you cough, OH OH!!) Thanks for the advice, maybe later on this week I will try to suppress it forcefully....

Thank you for this video!! A spiritual healer once explained to me that sometimes when we have something to say but we are holding it back (or when we are incredibly stressed), our throat chakra becomes blocked. The body reflects this with an inexplicable chronic cough that keeps irritating the throat and keeps getting worse. He recommended taking antinflamatories for a couple of days mixed with some slow breathing and meditation exercises. "The cough is just in your head", he said. "Ease the mind and breathe slow". Turns out, I was incredibly stressed because I was moving to another country and I had a lot of things i needed to say to my mom before I left. After facing this and becoming aware of my cough control, my 4 month cough was gone in 2 days!

Now about the cough...you are so correct on this specific "syndrome" I have been dealing with a chronic cough for years diagnosed as allergic.. meds and inhalers really don't do much except maybe as a placebo. I recently needed an MRI scan and had to remain very still for 30 minutes. I thought there was no way I could do this with my cough.. guess what? I could suppress it. I am going to keep doing this as if inside that horrible (yet important) machine. I have a hunch I'll be singing again.

Thank you for sharing your insightful video on overcoming habit coughing. While some viewers suggested a quicker approach, I truly appreciated the thorough explanation. Personally, as I delved into my own version of this issue, your detailed approach convinced me of your profound understanding. Between the ages of 23 and 67, I struggled with post-viral coughing. Despite consulting numerous doctors, the frustration persisted until a few months ago when I unconsciously decided to forcefully suppress the cough. Your story triggered a realization, leading me to consciously embrace the simple solution you suggested - just stopping it. Reflecting on my experience, I linked my habit to my father's severe pneumonia, where coughing was vital for survival. As a result, while I was a teenager, I employed similar, more intense coughing to shield myself from what happened to my dad. Initially seeming harmless, as I aged, it appeared to cause micro damage to the bronchi leading into my lungs. Microscopic healing gaps between cycles of coughs created a false sense of unresolved phlegm, perpetuating a vicious cycle. Your video helped me consciously recognize and break this pattern, stressing the importance of allowing my lungs to heal during sleep, resulting in significantly less coughing following a cold. Wow, forty-plus years of this struggle with countless days of unnecessary suffering. Yet, such a simple (albeit challenging) solution. I hope sharing my journey adds valuable insights to the conversation. (By the way I am not a doctor either.) Thank you so much!
@GracieTerzian

Wow! It’s interesting you say that, because I had pneumonia when I was about 10 years old, and I remember the doctor explaining to me the reason why the pneumonia developed was because I had mucus build up in my lungs and so it’s good to try to cough it out. And I think because of that I always spent the rest of my life always allowing myself to cough during a cold to avoid it from happening. Pretty much exactly what you described! I’m so glad you’ve finally found a solution that works for you and I’m sorry you had to suffer for so long! Thank you for your nice and thoughtful comment.

This was my experience as well. I learned one other cause and technique to fix my cough. If you can fast (not eat) for a day, do it. Do anything you can to eliminate post nasal drip, which tickles the throat. Eating causes your salivary glands to drip on your vocal cords and it makes you feel like you need to cough. You MUST give your throat a chance to heal.

Habitual coughing causing you to cough reminds me of “positive feedback loop” which mostly pertains to fevers. I’d get a nagging cough for about a month when I smoked weed and cigarettes. It would happen every year. I had asthma as a kid, so of course that plays a part. My advice to cigarette and weed smokers is to go on the patch till you can get off the nicotine fix or eat edibles if you’re in a state where you really can’t handle being without either. You will relapse, don’t beat yourself up. I still drink and I’m not even really in shape anymore since a back injury that required surgery about 5 years ago, but my lung issues have disappeared even post-COVID. I’d like to quit booze but one step at a time. Try not to put anything other than air into your lungs, singer or not.

Clearly we are creatures of habit. One analogy might be the compulsion to scratch an abrasion or wound whereby doing so just makes it worse. In reality the technique you describe here could be applied to any habit. For example, catching your negative thinking. If you catch a negative thought, reset the timer and try to lengthen the time between the next. Before you know it people will be asking what medication you are on because you will light up any room. Sometimes in life the most simplest approach in curing our human frailties are often overlooked. Thanks Gracie another well thought out and researched video. (Some videos need two thumbs up) 👍👍

Indeed! The scratching a wound analogy is a very good one! Interesting stuff!

@@GracieTerzian Searching for "OCD cough" sounds like you were already on the trail of the problem. (Not just a pretty face that's clear) :) Yes, I agree, it's very interesting how the mind works. Most of us are on auto-pilot yet are completely oblivious. As Jimmy Carr often says "Check yourself before you wreck yourself. " It must be such a relief for you knowing you found a solution. I'm also a singer but never had that problem. In my early singing years, I would often get throat infections because I was straining. I can only imagine how frustrating that cough must have been for you. (Not to mention all the youtube outtakes) Stay well.

Great suggestion. I have suppressed a cough several times during group meditation, and the urge always goes away (without coughing once). And yeah, if you are genuinely sick and have congestion that your body is trying to eject through coughing, that’s a different story of course. An incessant cough urge for no apparent reason all day every day becomes very annoying very quickly. Btw, something I learned very recently was that the need to cough can be caused by an irritated and inflamed esophagus due to GERD. I never knew that acid reflux could cause a person to cough and lead me to get the right treatment. Was also good to know!

Video was drawn out a bit, but I can relate so much. I have asthma, some gerd and a constant cough 😷 (that triggers my gag reflex). So I’m going to give this a go! 😄😄

I usually suffer for about 6-8 months of post infectious cough for the past 20 years, much worse at night. To make it bearable and the cough period shortened, I take Atarax (hydroxyzine hydrochloride) to make me fall asleep fast and hence not coughing at bedtime. I have found out that not coughing so bad at night will break the cough cycle and helps speed up shortening the post infectious cough period., probably by reducing the irritating of the airway. Of course by trying not to cough during the day time is quite manageable for me but at bedtime it seems impossible for me so taking medication to help me fall asleep fast really helps.

I’m a singer too and was afraid I’d never be able to sing again. Five weeks- nothing helped and went to urgent care and was given 2 cough syrups, an inhaler with steroid, and oral steroids. I got better for a few days and it’s back in full force. My head hurts, my throat hurts. I can’t even pinpoint how I got it except for breathing smoke from the Canadian fires. I will try your cure and thanks for the video.
