Support your future self (and this channel) by signing up for an account with tikr.com/tsi This is the first sponsor of the channel. I’ve finally found a product that I can truly stand behind. TIKR is an excellent tool for the intelligent investor to discover new investing opportunities. Personally, I’ve used TIKR since early 2021. Maybe you are asking yourself: Is $15 per month ($30 with PRO) worth it? If you do, that's a good thing, a great investor should always ask if outlays of cash today will yield returns for the future. Consider this. If using TIKR and doing real fundamental analysis on the companies that you invest in can help you improve your yearly returns by even just 1%, then you need a minimum of $18k in your portfolio to justify a yearly PLUS subscription ($15 * 12 / 1%). Anything beyond a 1% improvement in returns would be profit. However the returns of META and MRK still outweigh the losses of the 3 underperforming companies. Hey, first of all thanks for your nice work. Your Videos are not only straight forward and compact, they are also entertaining! I have one question: isn't the RoA a number that is specific to a sector? Software companies for example have on average a higher RoA than companies in the steel industrie. So, shouldnt the RoA rather be a measure to compare companies in the same sector than a measure to generally filter stocks beforehand? I would be super happy if you could give me your opinion on that! :) Keep up the great work! Cheers!

Why you look for ROA rather then ROCE? Just want to understand the advantage you see in ROA over ROCE. Thx 🙂
@carlhilber22752 жыл бұрын
TLDR; technically both were actually used in the example, and they are not exclusive to one another. The EV/EBIT ratio effectively conveys the exact data that you would otherwise get from an ROCE. An ROCE provides a quantitative evaluation whereas an ROA highlights qualitative attributes that correlate with strong investments. Ill try and answer as best as I can (not an expert but pretty sure I understand the rational). So, ROCE is kind of redundant for the purpose of ruling out stocks in this particular model as the function of an ROCE is already being performed by the EV/EBIT ratio. ROCE is similar to EV/EBIT, except EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) is instead divided by EV (the capital employed). Because we are only ruling out stocks by to 'X' value it does not matter which you use. A low EV/EBIT ratio indicates an undervalued business/stock compared to its earnings, so we search by < X. A high ROCE indicates a highly profitable business when earnings are compared to its value, so we search by > X. An EV/EBIT value 0.06 (6%) where earnings before tax and interest = 4 (EBIT) is instead divided by the total capital employed = 60 (EV). ROCE and EV/EBIT are essentially two different ways of phrasing the same idea. You can convert between and use them interchangeably as they consist of the same variables. having explained why ROCE wasn't used, (or rather why it actually was), the use of ROA is a bit easier to understand. ROA functions here as an additional control to rule out potentially unfavorable results (though I think there are some issues with it here which ill get into). Unlike an ROCE which just focusses on valuation, ROA Considers the ratio between 'net' profits and the value of business assets. ROA is used to predict the strength of busines models, as well as the quality of a businesses management. When (compared to other businesses) 'net' profit is high relative to the value of assets, overhead will typically to be quite low and profit margins high. This can indicate a strong and stable business. Businesses with high profit margins are also more likely to allocate a greater share of their budget into dividend payments and stock buy backs (good for overall returns and stock price growth). On the flip side ROA can be heavily influenced by outlier years when not averaged over longer periods of time. Using an unaveraged ROA as a tool to whittle down business options seems flawed to me, it increases the number of businesses unnecessarily include based on an exceptional outlier year, and excludes potentially great investments that may have just experienced an abnormally poor year for ROA. I think the biggest issue Using ROA to reduce data is that ROA heavily favors some industries over others. ROA will always favor a software business over an industrial business as a result of inherent differences in assets and overhead. This obviously does not mean high ROA tech business will always be better investments. That said 6% is a pretty low bar and even with outlier years or industry disparities in ROA, companies under a 6% ROA are likely worth ruling out. While you should be mindful of the ROA value that you decide on, applied conservatively it can be useful metric. Okay... To finally answer the question. ROCE is a quantitative metric vs ROA which provides more qualitative data. They are best used in tandem which was (pretty much) done in the example. ROCE is used to attempt a quantitative evaluation of a stock/ business for determining the strength of a value based investment. ROA supports an evaluation by identifying qualities that the business may posses which positively correlate with qualities typical of a strong investment.

Hi, I've a question about the question at 6:20, why isn't the second business a better option? I don't see how the RoA is relevant here. The second business, by having more assets, has more ability to sell things off and pay possible debt. And it has the second revenue. How can having MORE assets be a bad thing?
@TheSwedishInvestor2 жыл бұрын
Hey bonafide, cheers for the question. Most businesses can't sell off their assets without also shrinking the income of the business. A high RoA is an indication that if the business grows in the future, it doesn't need to use so much of the shareholders' capital to do so. Rather, the high RoA business can typically spend this on other things, like dividends or share buybacks (which, of course, benefits shareholders). Hope that helps!

Hey farang-la-fan5793, great question. I'm relying a ton on two of the greatest investors of all time - Warren Buffett & Joel Greenblatt - in everything that I do in the stock market. why is enterprise value = market cap + debt - cash & cash equivalents? i am confused because the company has more way more assets than cash & cash equivalents. so why don't you count them in EV?
@TheSwedishInvestor2 жыл бұрын
Hey Random Banana! Enterprise Value basically tells you how much it would cost a private buyer to purchase the whole company and make it debt-free. First, the buyer will have to pay the market cap. Then, after that, if he wants the company to be debt-free, he could pay off all the debt, and in that, he can use the company's cash and equivalents. EV could be argued to be a better estimate of the true cost of a company as it takes its balance sheet into account in this way. As a smaller investor, you cannot purchase a whole company, but you are purchasing a piece of it, so this is still interesting for you.
@randombanana6402 жыл бұрын
@@TheSwedishInvestor thanks for the explanation but i'm still confused about why only use cash&cash equivalents?

@@randombanana640 Many of the other assets on the balance sheet cannot easily be converted into cash and moved out of the business without affecting the revenues negatively.

Hey The Fantastical Investor, great to hear that you are enjoying TIKR too. RoA vs RoE vs ROCE is a whole topic in itself, and I think they all have their pros and cons. This is probably the topic of a video as it is too much to cover here. I will say this though. I don't think it makes much of a difference in the end. The RoA screener may end up with companies 1,2,3,4 & 5 while the RoE screener ends up with companies 3,4,5,6 & 7 and the ROCE screener with 2,3,6,8 & 9. And in the end their returns will be very similar anyways. The most important thing here is to use some type of metric to compare profits with assets.

@Adrik8082 жыл бұрын
Depends if the EV/Ebitda is negative due to negative EV which means the net debt is lower then the market cap which is a good thing and leads to negative EV, when the multiple is negative due to negative EBITDA it means the company is currently losing money
@humblest232 жыл бұрын
@@Adrik808 EV = mkt cap + net debt Net debt = total debt - cash Cash would have to be greater than market cap for EV/EBITDA to be negative. In todays world with where valautions are, there are probably not many companies with more cash than their market cap. Even most of the tech heavy weights with huge cash reserves have become steady users of debt, making net debt even less negative. There would have to be a massive selloff of probably 80%+ for their EV to turn negative. All this to say that it is more likely that EBITDA is negative. You can just look at the cash relative to market cap to tell

Hi there, what coupon code can I use when subscribing to a paid plan on TIKR that would benefit you? The reason I found TIKR is your channel.

Hello, I am new when it comes to investing and i would really apricate if I could get some tips about where it is worth to invest in (ETFs, Stocks, Growth Stocks, Dividend stock etc.) and if there is any good broker within Europe. Thanks a lot.

Do Tikr have access to all Swedish stocks? Also do I have to subscribe to access them? I do prefer investing in Swedish stocks because of tax reasons.
@TheSwedishInvestor2 жыл бұрын
Hey pizzamagnet! Yes, they do have access to pretty much every country in the world, Sweden definitely included. You'll have to get at least a Plus subscription for this, which is about $13 per month with the discont code provided in this video.

One aspect to consider for your filters: The way you set your filters you are biased to specific industries since the economics wary hugely between them. E.g. your ROA filters skew your results to service-based industries since the ROA are naturally higher there. Asset heavy industries get usually filtered out this way. Based on that you cannot really tell if a company is great or not since you are comparing apples with oranges. Intended or not, it is vital that everybody should be aware of the biases they willingly or unwillingly choose when filtering this way. I prefer to choose the industries first (e.g. only software companies) and then analyze the market

This is a good point Marknum, although I think that a low RoA could sometimes be an indicator to just stay away from an industry completely. It could be a sign of a market where competition is too tough and no single dominating actor has been able to arise. It may be an industry where it is difficult to build up a moat. But I agree somewhat here, one could do as you say and then look at percentiles within a given market, e.g. for Automobiles (where you'll exclude pretty much everyone with a 10% cutoff) you may want to lower that to 6% so that you'll see more companies. Then again, the Auto industry has been terrible for investors for many decades ...

@@TheSwedishInvestor for novices I would generally agree, but there are low margin and low ROA industries, which could make for great investments e.g. target in the retail space. like every industry, it has winners and losers
Hi Erik, Your channel has been adding a lot of value to my investing mindset. Thank you for creating valuable content. Why don't you use DCF Intrinsic Valuation rather than ratios to find bargains?
@TheSwedishInvestor2 жыл бұрын
Hey Juber Shaikh! Cheers for the support, and thanks for the question. One can do that, but I'd put it in the "deep dive" section as doing a DCF that is any good will require a lot of familiarity with the company that you are analyzing. This video is primarily aimed towards finding opportunities which you'd want to spend more time looking at.

Great video but this is not the kind of video that should include a paid promotion. What are alternative ways to research stocks that don’t require payment?
@mikatu2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. That is precisely the point. We need to know how to do it ourselves, not with a paid tool.
