However, I advise people never to forget the diversification principle, make sure to diversify your investments so that when another is down, the other will be up. You can do so by getting an experienced specialist whose platform has diverse investment choices to choose from. By doing this, you give little room for regrets and perhaps gain more.

The most important part of Buffett's sentence at 0:40 "..for anyone who knows what they're doing." If you're watching this, there is a 99.9% chance you DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Therefore if you believe you can pick stocks, you are almost certainly shooting yourself in the foot in the long run, the extent of the damage you do to yourself could be anything from just not making as much as if you'd bought the whole haystack, to literally losing every penny you speculate with (yes you aren't an investor, you're a speculator), to even worse with leverage. The sooner you stop lying to yourself about how much you actually the know, the quicker you will get rich or save yourself from ruin.

It is about how much money you have to invest that really counts. As time went by Warren Buffet made more money so it made sense for him to buy more stocks and still able to invest a lot of money into each stock. If you have 1,000 dollars to invest it doesn't make sense to have 10 stocks.
@mateuszfejfer18222 жыл бұрын
I think I have to disagree. When you have more money, you also want to have a bigger income. That's why percentages are more important that the exact values. The two cases where values are important are those that Sweedish Investor has pointed out: 1. You can make the investing amount back in a couple of months through your salary (you can be more risky then) 2. You have so much money to invest, that you can't buy as many stocks from a single company as you'd like to since there are simply no more to buy (Warren Buffet's case). I could be wrong, of course, and I welcome counter arguments
I've been through the 4 disiplines you suggest, and despite it backing my investment philosophy I will be thinking about paring down the number of funds I have. Appear to be a number which are basically duplicates. So a worthwhile exercise, thank you.

Sure, diversify your portfolio, but aim to have only the highest conviction stocks of yours within your portfolio and really double down on building momentous positions ... Just something to consider is Buffett and Munger became multi millionaires & billionaires from BUYING entire businesses into Berkshire Hathaway, taking them private. When they’ve liked something they’ve literally taken it off the market. Look at Berkshires private portfolio…there’s a huge difference between capital appreciation of owning shares of a company and just buying it outright and collecting 100% of its gross profits not dependent on its stock price. Since his 30’s Buffett has had the kind of wealth where he could bet most of it on one company because he’s had huge valuable assets & businesses he owns to fall back on….and he’s also taken some huge losses on positions too. Most people will never have the kind of money to bet most of it on a few things and hope they’re right because it took them years just to build up that capital in the first place. I do love Warren’s principles but there’s certain things billionaires can do that most people can’t which is take unsubstantiated risk for the potential of huge gains.

I think when it comes to value investing, it should be made clear that over the long run, it is a strategy with its ups and downs, like many other strategies. It is perfectly reasonable, however its results are still very much dependent on the markets. Also, when you pick individual stocks, much of the return is coming from factors as market, sector, geography, which you can still get with wider ETFs. This can't be denied but it is often unseen by the value investor. Let alone the time that you have to put into researching stocks - if you have a full time job it is difficult to do it properly.
I'm 22 and I have 19 stocks. I have time and money so might as well start now.

In my satellite portfolio, I have about 77 stocks because I want dividends paid every day where possible. Why? Because I am living in a country whose AUD is less than USD so that when dividends are spun off, they are added to my buying power which means I need to put in less lower AUDs myself. You can pretty much tell where I am in my investing journey. Cheers!

The Norway pension fund is the biggest fund in the world {1.2 trillion} they have 9'000 stocks in the portfolio, makes Buffett's Berkshire look like a hot dog stand!

Apples and oranges. Berkshire Hathaway was created by two men, not an entire government, and there is no federally mandated laws requiring government workers to contribute -- nor laws requiring private employers to provide pension plans within the fund.

Is it such a bad strategy, as someone about to turn 18, to invest a percentage of my money put aside to invest each month in index funds, giving myself security and confidence in compounding? The rest of my monthly investments could then go to my own research and learning.

Warren says there are opportunities that it would be a mistake to not have half of your net worth investing into. Personally, I’m not confident enough to put 50% into one stock, because I don’t think I can be right on where I think a business is going to end up half of the time. I cap myself at 20%, because I know for sure I can be right at in at least 1/5 of my stock analysis and where the stock is going to end up. If you invest all of your capital into 5 businesses, 4 could go bankrupt, and 1 could increase 10x in value, and you’d double your money. I’m no Warren Buffet, so I can’t take that 1/2 risk. 😅

Other than Apple, there are not dozens of good, profitable $2.4 trillion dollar companies that Buffet can dump $139B into. Berkshire Hathaway has ended up wholly owning over a dozen smaller companies, already, because there is simply too much money to invest.
i have 655 individual open positions in my Porty, all i do is peel small profits off of a few core positions and open new ones, been doing it for 9mths or so.

But u are comparing the capacity of being a good long term stock picker and earn 16%/year till retirement vs. a sp500 fund earning 11%/year till retirement. What u should compare is people trying to be traders and constantly losing money in the market vs the sp500 index fund
@brunomanco75292 жыл бұрын
Thats why for me a portfolio of 80% sp500 and 20% cash (for crash oportunities) is the way to go. And at retirement put it all on cash or leave 5% in stocks just to play with it
