Hello. I have a stupid question but I really want an honest suggestion. Can someone with no technical background or coding knowledge, not knowing even excel, will a Google analytics course be a good choice to enter data analytics field? Can that person actually learn data analytics and get a job if no such experience? Would really appreciate your suggestion!!

I have been analyzing datasets I found on Kaggle for my personal projects. However, based on this video and the projects that landed subscribers their first jobs I feel like I am just looking for trends rather than making a tool that solves a problem, so I feel more like a researcher at a university rather than someone working for a company. Can these types of projects land me a job?

Explained perfectly! I’m a division 1 golfer and my coaches are not exactly up to date with data analysis. I’ve tried convincing them to use stat tracking apps but they don’t think the cost is worth the return. (They are kinda pricey). After listening to their thoughts I decided I could code an application that will be specific to our own team and help them understand where each of us individually need to improve. Perfect project because it’s something I care about and something that provides tangible benefits.

At 4:25 you talk about a creating a project where you helped other people using office data. If you wanted to share your projects with a potential employer, you can't share data from another company. In a case like this, how would you share the project you created with a potential employer?
@LukeBarousse
@LukeBarousse 2 жыл бұрын
In those cases, it's actually not as important to share the physical project IMO. I think what is more important is that you can share generalities about the project, BUT more importantly how your project made an impact on the team/company.

dude I don't know if you know this, but RP came out with a diet app whose greatest strength is taking the feedback you give it (your weigh-ins, satiation levels, meal adherence etc) and dictating the macros you need for the following week. It then uses a large set of basic whole ingredients and foods to help you put your meals together for the week precisely for the new macros, and gives you a shopping list of all the ingredients in their raw form.

Beyond Excel, how did you find what programs to use? Was it what was readily accessible to you right away by purchases, something that employers provided, or did you rely on mostly open source free programs? And how did you come to the conclusion that 'yeah, this is the best program for this'.

it really depends on what your employer and client is using. Throughout my career, I've learned the program that my team uses, whether that is Power BI, Tableau, or Python. It really depends on what the end-user wants the solution in. Some solutions were free and others weren't

Hi Luke Can I ask you if vba is worth it? I didn't find anywhere that VBA is requested. I'd focus more on Python, SQL, Tableu, and some Excel. Unless vba being part of excel hence would be requested for a data analyst. Even though I always read and observed that python, Powerbi, SQL are somehow most used.
@LukeBarousse
@LukeBarousse 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, I agree with the skills you outlined above being more important that VBA. It isn't as much requested (and frankly I think it's a little outdated and not nearly as powerful as something like Python). In the example I shared with using excel and VBA, I was taking a college class that required the use of VBA. I used it once after this in a short project and haven't touched it since.

This was eye opening. Just listening works. But I am usually alone at work. And would like some ideas for solo projects for a newbie to programming to go into my portfolio. I don't have a portfolio website for myself, but would like to add the experience on LinkedIn or the likes. I just cannot start working on Upwork because of the shifts I mentioned in your previous video. So I would like to get a little bit of experience in analysis and programming (I am learning R due to the Google Data Analytics Certificate) so I need lots of time for the projects. Are there any DIY Data projects for newbies like me? I searched Google but the projects mentioned there are either too difficult as I am new to programming or are very time consuming. I was thinking maybe I should just ask my boss to give me sales data from his business and then talk with you on how to approach the analysis, if he even agrees to provide the data to me. Other than that, I just can't seem to get working on my portfolio. My Google Certification Capstone took me almost 2 months to complete due to time limitations. I am sorry for my really long comments, I wish I could TL;DR them, but the TL;DR would remove the details that would make a person comprehend my situation on a fundamental level. This is Saudi Arabia. There is no team here. Expats just are thrown into a job and expected to do everything. My boss comes around at 11 usually. And we also have to do his job on the maintenance part. Basically, I do the job of my immediate Supervisor and he handles everything for the boss. And being Saudi Arabia, we cannot even raise our voice, because there is no rights here for expats, like literally. I hope you have a clearer picture of my situation. I have my family to take care of. And little to no savings. If I had savings, I wouldn't have stayed here. Most of my earnings go to my family to support them with the help of my sisters living in the US because I earn very less. They are trying to get me to the US but I cannot get a work visa if I have no experience and maintenance planner experience in Gulf nations are not appreciated there is no exposure to technical work in Gulf countries.

And the worst part of my job is that most people I do interact with are uneducated technicians from mostly Southeast Asian countries. I wish I hand't accepted this job in the first place. 4 years and I have learned how to work for others without any pay whatsoever. It had made me hate desk jobs because this is all there is to desk jobs, just work for bosses, have nothing to do with technical stuff unless you work in big companies like Google or NASA. But seeing you, Thu Vu, and your friends and others on KZbin and LinkedIn had given me hope for data analysis. The same thing happened with my CCNA, I saw an opportunity for it in the Saudi labor market, studied for 2 years and then when I finally got my cert, COVID-19 hit. And then Saudization hit me harder than COVID-19. I think I should just contact UNHCR to take me in as a refugee to some other country, LOL, at least there I can be around more people like you perhaps and learn from them.

WEll I think the biggest thing that you should commend yourself for is that you haven't given up. There are plenty of self-guided proects out there that you can check out. Many on KZbin and i've done more on platforms like Coursera and DataCamp. They are great for having you follow a plan to complete. BUT I really like this idea of getting data from your boss, as this would be a project you can use your current experience for. So I'd go for this! Keep your head up; you got this!

Hey Luke, first of all thank you for your videos. How would you send your results to your client? In a PDF with Explanations?
@LukeBarousse
@LukeBarousse 2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the client and what format they want it in. If it is my boss; i'm probably giving her the insights via a power point; if its a client that is familiar with a tool; it may be just the code itself that I used. It really can truly vary depending on the client. BUT communication is always the key soft-skill needed when sharing these insights

Hi Luke, I'm an industrial engineering student graduating next year and got really interested in the field of data. I've been researching data analytics and data science and trying to figure out which one I should focus on. While studying I currently work at a marketing agency and work with the analytics for Google ads, Facebook ads, and Google Analytics. Would you recommend me to focus on learning the data analytics part, or the data science part? I want to combine industrial engineering knowledge with data skills to really stand out in my career.
@LukeBarousse
@LukeBarousse 2 жыл бұрын
It's really depends on whta your interest relies for either looking at data analytics or data science. For me, I more analyzing data; so data analytics is where I go. Those in Data science typically have a different (or even broader approach). I don't want to tell you what your passion is in; but personally I think the data analytics would be an easier path to start for what you are wanting to do with marketing.
@La_Maquina806
@La_Maquina806 2 жыл бұрын
@@LukeBarousse Thank you for the response! I've thought about focusing on Analytics because Industrial Engineering is mostly that from what I've observed. From what I've seen until now, I believe I should learn to learn the programming languages required to get more deeply into the raw data.
@LukeBarousse
@LukeBarousse 2 жыл бұрын
@@La_Maquina806 In this case i'd focus on the data analytics part over data science in general. Data Science can be a very broad area that includes many subject areas (like data analytics). So it sounds like you are on the correct path.

Hey, Luke! May I ask you a very silly question? There's something I simply don't understand: let's say you build a project, run the analysis and jump into an outcome. Fine. Project finished. What's next? Even if you build a dashboard, it becomes "their" problem because you aim them to self manage their decision making process. Is this right? If so, what is the daily basis activity of a data scientist? Would I be unemployed right after the project is finished? I'm kind of stuck with this doubt. Thabks for your great videos. Greetings from Argentina!
